A Toolkit For Tracking And Mediating Parametric Objects Upon Commodity Mobile Devices, Shantanu Thatte Jan 2014

A Toolkit For Tracking And Mediating Parametric Objects Upon Commodity Mobile Devices, Shantanu Thatte

LSU Master's Theses

The large number of mobile devices introduced in the market in recent years provide numerous interaction opportunities. We used commercially available products to create an interface for interaction with diverse datasets. We extended this scenario to include multiple physical instances, realizing a real-time multi-party interaction session. Tangibles act as tools and containers, in a fashion that requires their physical location and orientation to be evaluated continuously during a session. We present a technique to detect an object using only the touchscreen of a mobile device as an input, by means of touch patterns created on the screen. This helps avoid …

Does Exploring Non-Linear Models Address High School Students' Misconceptions Of Linearity And Rate Of Change?, Kailyn Brabham Jan 2014

Does Exploring Non-Linear Models Address High School Students' Misconceptions Of Linearity And Rate Of Change?, Kailyn Brabham

LSU Master's Theses

Previous studies have shown that students at all levels—elementary, secondary and post-secondary—tend to apply linear reasoning in mathematical problems where non-linear models are needed. They rely on proportionality and linear equations without paying attention to the problem features needed for an accurate model. In the present study, students were taught using an activity-inspired by modeling curricula. In a hands-on activity, they explored the rate of change of linear and nonlinear functions that arise in describing elastic materials, recording average rates of change and noting key graphical features. This led them to articulate the relationship between nonlinear models, local linearity and …

Administrator Perceptions Of Intramural Coed Flag Football Modifications: A Qualitative Analysis, Zacharias Wood Jan 2014

Administrator Perceptions Of Intramural Coed Flag Football Modifications: A Qualitative Analysis, Zacharias Wood

LSU Master's Theses

Coed sport environments can be paradoxical settings where pre-existing gender biases influence participants’ enjoyment and success. Furthermore, gendered messages and stereotypes as well as low expectations for females within coed sports can create participation barriers by reducing feelings of confidence and performance. Within Campus Recreation, intramural sport administrators have a significant role in determining participation opportunities and experiences. This investigation examined administrators’ perspectives about coed intramural flag football gender modifications. Specifically, three research questions guided this study: (a) how do intramural administrators view coed flag football gender modifications?; (b) to what extent do intramural administrators perceive gender modifications to impact …

Study Of The Low Energy Solar Neutrino Spectrometer (Lens) Concept With The Ulens Prototype, Liudmyla Afanasieva

LSU Master's Theses

Neutrinos are a useful tool that serves as an immediate probe of the Sun’s core providing insight into the details of the Sun’s energy production, internal composition and structure. Across the globe a number of solar neutrinos experiments have helped to clarify various characteristics of the solar neutrino spectrum. However, little experimental information is known regarding low-energy solar neutrinos, which comprise about 90% of the total solar neutrino spectrum. With this in mind, we are developing the Low Energy Solar Neutrino Spectrometer (LENS), an indium-based liquid scintillator detector with the capability to precisely measure the full spectrum of solar neutrinos, …

Teaching Strategies For Proof Based Geometry, Kristina Marie Chaves Jan 2014

Teaching Strategies For Proof Based Geometry, Kristina Marie Chaves

LSU Master's Theses

This study aims is to discover the best methods for geometry students to master proof writing. Students who are taught how to write proofs in a traditional setting find proofs to be very difficult - struggling throughout the school year writing proofs on their own. Studies have been conducted regarding the use of dynamic geometry software in proof writing. To further study the effects of proof writing using dynamic geometry software, forty-eight freshmen students enrolled in an honors geometry course at a high performing suburban high school in Louisiana were given several proofs to complete, along with self-reflection surveys. During …

A Storied Surface, Courtney Wilburn Marse Jan 2014

A Storied Surface, Courtney Wilburn Marse

LSU Master's Theses

A Storied Surface is an exploration of narrative based graphic design engineered for textile surfaces. Beginning with an experiment involving the characters of the novel Matilda, I developed a design system. My process involves creating narratives and illustrating the characters. Then the illustration is abstracted. The abstraction is used to create prints. Finally, all of the elements including the original illustration, abstraction, and print are used to create engineered designs for three-dimensional surfaces. Advances in digital textile printing and the increasing implementation of graphic textiles in the fashion industry led me to experiment with applying my own design to textiles …

Effect Of Hydrologic, Geomorphic, And Vegetative Conditions On Avian Communities In The Middle Rio Grande Of New Mexico, Sarah G. Hamilton

LSU Master's Theses

Anthropogenic regulation of the Middle Rio Grande (MRG) of New Mexico has altered the hydrogeomorphology of the system and led to a rapid decline in breeding riparian-obligate birds as native riparian forests are replaced by exotic tamarisk stands. In this study, I evaluated the relationships among hydrogeomorphology, vegetation structure and composition, and avian communities of the San Acacia Reach (SAR) of the MRG. I conducted avian point count surveys and collected habitat data to determine avian community structure and abundance, geomorphic feature, surface flooding, and vegetation structure and composition along 44 transects throughout the SAR. A total of 999 point …

Effects Of Induced Plant Resistance And Potassium Fertilization Rates On Soybean Looper (Chrysodeixis Includens) Development In Soybean, Xuan Chen

LSU Master's Theses

Soybean looper, Chrysodeixis includens (Walker), is one of the most destructive pests of soybean in the southern U.S. It is highly resistant to most insecticides. Induced host plant resistance and cultural control are sought as alternative control tactics. In this study, effects of induced resistance by exogenous application of elicitors were estimated on soybean looper development in soybean. Three different known elicitors of SAR (systemic acquired resistance), Actigard 50WG (acibenzolar-S-methyl), Regalia (extract of Reynoutria sachalinensis) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA), were applied to soybean plants at R2 and R5 stages to determine if these chemicals could induce plant resistance and lower …

Using Brand Concept Maps To Examine The Extension Of Ford And Jeep Brands, Yao Wei Jan 2014

Using Brand Concept Maps To Examine The Extension Of Ford And Jeep Brands, Yao Wei

LSU Master's Theses

The intense competition in marketing today has led to excessive financial risks when a new brand enters the market. To avoid the extremely high costs and difficulties associated with this process, many firms choose to take advantage of established brands to launch new product lines or categories. The purpose of this study was to explore the evaluation of brand extension in fashion using brand concept mapping (BCM). Specifically, the first objective was to identify consumers’ associations with Ford and Jeep apparel using BCM, while the second objective was to categorize those associations using Korchia’s (1999) brand association categories to compare …

Inferences Of Subsistence Activities Using Musculoskeletal Stress Markers Of Humerii From Two Louisiana Archaeological Populations, Brian M. Thibodeaux Jan 2014

Inferences Of Subsistence Activities Using Musculoskeletal Stress Markers Of Humerii From Two Louisiana Archaeological Populations, Brian M. Thibodeaux

LSU Master's Theses

Wolff’s Law states that bone is laid down where it is needed; therefore, mechanical factors, including subsistence-based activity patterns, play a role in bone biology. One of bone’s responses to strain is the development of musculoskeletal stress markers (MSMs) at entheses, or the sites in which soft tissues, including tendons and ligaments, attach to bone. MSMs have been used by bioarchaeologists to make inferences about past population’s activity patterns and subsistence behaviors. The following study scores eight MSMs of the proximal humerii from the Tchefuncte (16ST1) and Greenhouse (16AV2) sites in Louisiana. The MSMs were segregated into muscle groups and …

Growth And Mortality Of Spat, Seed, And Market-Sized Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica) In Low Salinities And High Temperatures, Molly Marie Rybovich

LSU Master's Theses

Changes in the timing and interaction of seasonal high temperatures and low salinity as predicted by climate change models could dramatically alter oyster population dynamics. Little is known explicitly about how low salinity and high temperature combinations affect spat (<25 mm), seed (26-75 mm), and market (>75 mm) oyster growth and mortality. Using lab and field studies, this project quantified the combined effects of extremely low salinities (< 5) and high temperatures (>30 oC) on growth and survival of spat, seed, and market-sized oysters. In 2012 and 2013, hatchery-produced oysters were placed in open and closed bags at three sites in Breton Sound, LA, along a salinity gradient which typically …

Prophets, Studio Revolutionaries, And On-The-Ground Activist: Hip-Hop/Rap Artists' Approaches To Community Engagement, Castel Sweet

LSU Master's Theses

With few exceptions, previous scholarship on rap and hip-hop music focuses on the study of lyrics and videos; emphasizing the negative influence that artists have on their communities and on perpetuating inequality in the United States. Contrarily, this study explores artists’ embeddedness in local communities, their interpretation of the connectedness of their work to their communities, and the impact they have as individual civic actors outside the narrow limits of their art. Using in-depth interviews with self-identified rap and located in the Southern region of the United States, I explore artists’ personal narratives of the social issues that plague their …

Effects Of Different Preparation Methods On Structure And Catalytic Behavior Of Iron-Based Catalyst Via Fischer Trospch Synthesis Of Biomass-Derived Syngas, Khietlethanh Mai Jan 2014

Effects Of Different Preparation Methods On Structure And Catalytic Behavior Of Iron-Based Catalyst Via Fischer Trospch Synthesis Of Biomass-Derived Syngas, Khietlethanh Mai

LSU Master's Theses

Lignocellulosic biomass is a promising feedstock for producing liquid fuels via synthetic gas (syngas) and Fischer Tropsch Synthesis (FTS). Syngas produced from biomass has low H2/CO ratio (~0.7/1) and high concentration of CO2. In order to produce liquid hydrocarbons from this syngas, a catalyst must be used to increase the H2/CO ratio to 2 or higher. This catalyst must also have reasonable reverse water-gas-shift (R-WGS) activity in a CO2 rich environment. In this study, two 100Fe/4Cu/4K/6Zn were prepared using coprecipitation (Cat_C) and impregnation (Cat_I) methods. The effects of these preparation methods on the catalyst structure and FTS performance in biomass …

A general review of the history and methodologies of leaf litter arthropod extraction was provided, in conjunction with repeated, timed trials to compare the relative effectiveness of the two methods using litter samples from various geographic …

Change In Developmental Quotient In Toddlers Assessed For Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lindsey Willis Williams Jan 2014

Change In Developmental Quotient In Toddlers Assessed For Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lindsey Willis Williams

LSU Master's Theses

ASD is marked by significant delays in social and language development, while development in other areas, such as cognitive functioning, can be highly variable from person to person. Though preschool-aged children with ASD often exhibit a profile of developmental delays similar to children with other developmental disorders at a discrete moment in time, few studies have investigated possible differences in rate of skill acquisition in developmental domains in children with different disorders. Sensitive periods of development are marked by less stability in performance of developmental skills. Results of prior studies suggest that if appropriate early interventions are applied during sensitive …

The broadcasters and media owners who own copyrights in the content transmitted via the over-the-air signals that Aereo and FilmOn X capture argue that this service infringes upon their exclusive right of public performance, specifically under the Transmit Clause. The broadcasters have brought suit against both Aereo and FilmOn X for copyright infringement in several courts across the United States; some courts have found the online …

Paleoclimatology And Paleotempestology Study Of Blue Hole, Lighthouse Reef, Belize Through Geochemical Proxies, Laura Carolyn Sorey Jan 2014

Paleoclimatology And Paleotempestology Study Of Blue Hole, Lighthouse Reef, Belize Through Geochemical Proxies, Laura Carolyn Sorey

LSU Master's Theses

A large Pleistocene age sinkhole, the Blue Hole on Lighthouse Reef off the coast of Belize in the Caribbean Sea is the site of a well preserved sedimentary record that serves as paleoclimatology and paleotempestology archive. The nutrient-starved surface waters of the Blue Hole and the surrounding lagoons are “fertilized” by the seasonal introduction of cool, nutrient-rich waters upwelled from the Caribbean deep water. These waters, which stimulate production of organic materials within the surface waters, carry a heightened isotopic signature that is imparted to the organics resultant from upwelling-induced production. These organics are then incorporated into the predominantly carbonate …

LSU Master's Theses

Planted acreage of cotton in Louisiana has decreased over the past several years due to higher cotton variable production costs, stagnant cotton market prices, and higher grain yields and market prices for corn and soybeans. The general objective was to determine the economic impact of the adoption and use of an onboard module building cotton harvest system on the ability of the cotton enterprise to compete for planted acreage in the mixed crop farming areas of Louisiana. Specific research objectives included the estimated of comparative ownership and operating costs for the module building harvest systems relative to existing basket/module builder …

Regulation Of Oocyte Meiotic Resumption Using Camp Modulators In Bovine In Vitro Maturation, Sarah Farmer Jan 2014

Regulation Of Oocyte Meiotic Resumption Using Camp Modulators In Bovine In Vitro Maturation, Sarah Farmer

LSU Master's Theses

In vitro maturation (IVM) is a reproductive technique critical to in vitro embryo production (IVP) in commercial livestock industries, research, and human infertility treatment. Currently, IVP has low efficiency due to an inadequate IVM system in which premature meiotic resumption results in low oocyte viability. Meiotic arrest is regulated primarily by 3’,5’-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), and the most successful methods of improving IVM utilize cAMP modulators to maintain high intra-oocyte cAMP, delaying the onset of maturation. This thesis includes experiments comparing standard bovine IVM to a novel extended IVM method similar to the procedure described by Albuz and colleagues (Albuz …

Detection And Quantification Of Xanthomonas Albilineans In Sugarcane Tissues With Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction And Evaluation As Methodology For Monitoring Resistance, Andres Felipe Gutierrez Viveros Jan 2014

Detection And Quantification Of Xanthomonas Albilineans In Sugarcane Tissues With Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction And Evaluation As Methodology For Monitoring Resistance, Andres Felipe Gutierrez Viveros

LSU Master's Theses

Leaf scald, caused by Xanthomonas albilineans, is a major sugarcane disease worldwide that is controlled primarily with host plant resistance. Since visual evaluation of disease resistance can be uncertain due to erratic symptom expression, a more reliable screening method is needed for resistance research. A quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay was developed previously with demonstrated potential for resistance screening. However, only four cultivars with extreme reaction against the disease (two highly susceptible and two highly resistant) were compared. Therefore, additional research was conducted to demonstrate assay specificity, compare bacterial populations in 31 clones with varying levels of susceptibility at …

Evaluating The Influence Of Moisture Variation On Resilient Modulus For Unsaturated Pavement Subgrades, Ayan Mehrotra Jan 2014

Evaluating The Influence Of Moisture Variation On Resilient Modulus For Unsaturated Pavement Subgrades, Ayan Mehrotra

LSU Master's Theses

The cost of repairing pavements that fail before the end of their service life is enormous in the United States and it is continuously rising. Premature pavement failure is often associated with loss of support in the subgrade layer, especially in regions with fine-grained subgrade soils. Resilient modulus (Mr) is analogous to the stiffness of a subgrade and a key design parameter for pavements. Due to seasonal variation, Mr varies periodically due to changes in moisture content. However, Mr depends not only on moisture content but also the stress state of the subgrade, which for unsaturated soils is dependent on …

Damage Evolution In Pressurized Domain: A Gradient Based Variational Approach, Navid Mozaffari Jan 2014

Damage Evolution In Pressurized Domain: A Gradient Based Variational Approach, Navid Mozaffari

LSU Master's Theses

Construction of appropriate models through mathematical analysis for materials in order to find their main properties and ingredients and enhance the numerical simulations to predict their behavior under specific conditions is in interest even in mathematics departments rather than material science and engineering branches. Among these models, gradient damage models have reached to the specific stage because of their ability to bring the effects of micro cracks propagation into conventional continuum mechanics formulation and approximate brittle fracture as one of the most phenomena in the area of material behavior simulation. This thesis includes the application and extension of a previously …

Dgge Analysis Of Denitrifying Bacterial Diversity In Response To Nutrients And Oil Contamination In Salt Marshes, Catalina Restrepo Jan 2014

Dgge Analysis Of Denitrifying Bacterial Diversity In Response To Nutrients And Oil Contamination In Salt Marshes, Catalina Restrepo

LSU Master's Theses

Salt marsh ecosystems located at the Mississippi River delta are exposed to high levels of point and nonpoint sources of nutrients such as nitrate-based fertilizers and to oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico. However, there is little information on the effects of eutrophication and oil contamination on the bacterial diversity of denitrifying bacteria in salt marsh sediments of coastal Louisiana. The effects of excess nutrients on the bacterial diversity of denitrifiers were analyzed by injecting sediment cores with high concentrations of nitrate (100μM NO3- and 20,000μM NO3-) and carbon (0% and 20% C concentration from the original sample). After …
