Immigration And The Future Of Canada’S Population, Roderic Beaujot, Deborah Matthews
PSC Discussion Papers Series
This paper considers the effect of immigration on the size and demographic structure of Canada. Following a brief overview of the history of immigration in this country, we evaluate the effects of migration on population growth, age composition and geographic distribution. Immigration has a very limited impact on the age structure, and thus has very limited value as a tool to decrease the dependency ratio. However, given that fertility has stabilized well below the replacement rate for the past twenty years, immigration will play an increasingly important role in population growth and can be an effective tool to avoid population …

The Improvement Of Marriages And Divorces Statistics In South Africa: Relevance, Registration Issues And Challenges, Sulaiman Bah
The Improvement Of Marriages And Divorces Statistics In South Africa: Relevance, Registration Issues And Challenges, Sulaiman Bah
PSC Discussion Papers Series
With the recent passing by parliament of the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act, 1998 (Act 120 of 1998), it is now possible to increase the coverage of registered marriages and divorces in South Africa. In the past, since certain unions were legally not recognised, the marriage statistics collected by the Department of Home Affairs excluded a large proportion of marriages, for example customary marriages among Africans. However, the passing of legislation on its own is a necessary but not sufficient condition to ensure that customary marriages are indeed registered. The aim of the paper is to explore ways of making …

A Critical Analytical And Historical Review Of South African Published Life Tables, Sulaiman M. Bah
A Critical Analytical And Historical Review Of South African Published Life Tables, Sulaiman M. Bah
PSC Discussion Papers Series
The paper gives a critical review of South African life tables published since the 1920s. The life tables were constructed on the assumption that vital registration was complete among whites, coloureds and Asians. Over time, robust measures of the life tables such as under-five mortality rate and life expectancy at birth have to show internal and external consistency. In addition, derived measures such as entropy, E, which summarises the degree of convexity of the life table survivorship function, l(x), and Anson’s U also have to display such consistency. Against these criteria, the paper sets out to assess the validity of …

Time Availability And Relative Resources As Determinants Of The Sexual Division Of Domestic Work, Seth Mcfarlane, Roderic Beaujot, Tony Haddad

Based on data from the 1992 Canadian General Social Survey on time-use, the time spent in housework and in child care are analyzed for women and men who are working full-time in dual-earner families. It is found that living with children under 19 years of age increases the average time spent in housework and child care and reduces that in paid work for both men and women. Time availability considerations, associated with the time demands of the family and the capacity to respond given the time in paid work, are found to be important determinants, especially for time spent in …

Early Life Transitions Of Canadian Women: A Cohort Analysis Of Timing, Sequences, And Variations, Zenaida R. Ravanera, Rajulton Fernando, Thomas K. Burch
PSC Discussion Papers Series
This paper looks into the timing and sequences of early life transitions of Canadian women using data from the 1995 General Social Survey of Family and Friends. Six events occurring in early adulthood are examined: school completion, first job, home-leaving, first cohabitation, first marriage, and first birth. Our analysis of birth cohorts spanning 60 years shows that the biggest changes in timing occurred in school completion and start of work; that the trajectories involving work before marriage have gained popularity among later cohorts; and that education appreciably delays early life transitions.

Determinants Of The Risk And Timing Of Alcohol And Illicit Drug Use Onset Among Natives And Non-Natives: Similarities And Differences, Margaret L. De Wit, Bryan G. Embree, David J. De Wit

Objective: Employing probability samples from the Ontario Health Survey Supplement (Ontario Ministry of Health, 1990/91) and a community of Native Ontario reserve residents (Embree, 1993), this study compared and contrasted Natives' and Non-natives' determinants of drug and alcohol use onset. Method: Proportional Hazards techniques identified factors associated with the risk and timing of onset of substance use (alcohol and illicit drugs) for both cultural groups, and special attention was paid to the role of family background characteristics as precursors to early alcohol and drug-use onset. Results: The multivariate results reveal that, for both Natives and Non-natives alike, and considering both …

Indirect Estimation Of Pre-Census Baseline In The Aftermath Of A War, Sulaiman M. Bah, Mohammed Mahibur-Rahman
Indirect Estimation Of Pre-Census Baseline In The Aftermath Of A War, Sulaiman M. Bah, Mohammed Mahibur-Rahman
PSC Discussion Papers Series
Pre-censal estimates help in proper planning for the execution of a census. After the end of a destabilizing war, these pre-censal estimates cannot be easily obtained. The paper proposes how pre-censal estimates can be obtained in the aftermath of a war using indirect estimation techniques. This involves the estimation of probabilities of mortality and of emigration obtained from survival models and multiple decrement life tables.
