Recovery colleges are cocreated and codeveloped programs and services that mainly focus on increasing community integration and improving the well-being of people who have mental health concerns. Recovery colleges originated in England in 2009, with the first college established at the South West London Recovery College in London. Currently, there is no general consensus about what constitutes a recovery college. The primary focus of a recovery college is to provide a safe space where people who have mental illnesses and/or problematic substance use can lead their own journey to recovery. Oral health is a major indicator for overall health; however, it is not covered under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), making oral health care relatively inaccessible to a large population. A large and diverse municipality has recently conducted a needs assessment that shows that there is a need to improve accessibility to dental care for its citizens. A Community Health Centre (CHC) spearheaded the development of an oral health coalition to help unify and steer the direction of oral health care in the region. Newborn Screening Ontario (NSO) prepares to implement screening for critical congenital heart defects (CCHDs) in all newborns born in Ontario. Janet Marcadier, a genetic counsellor at NSO, recognizes the particular challenges of implementing a point-of-care newborn screening test that will be performed by submitters (nurses, midwives) across the province. The other 29 conditions screened for by NSO do not involve a point-of-care test but rather testing is done in the NSO laboratory. While standardization for a provincial program is important, there are many contextual factors that will impact CCHD screening implementation at each specific birth site.
