Adverse gestational outcomes of pregnancy are a globally occurring threat to fetomaternal health, with limited clinical prognostic and intervention strategies aside from premature labor induction. Epidemiological data shows strong correlations between gestational exposure to air pollution and the incidence of adverse gestational outcomes. The research presented here was designed to evaluate potential murine models of gestational exposure, as well as quantify maternal cardiovascular damage therein. These studies employ radiotelemetry, echocardiography, single cell RNA-sequencing, and untargeted lipidomic analyses in efforts to study these effects. In this dissertation project, I utilize a Critical Mixed Race Studies (CMRS) lens to examine how mixed-race Black/White players in the National Basketball Association (NBA) are represented, discussed, racialized, and gendered by major sports media platforms. More specifically, I utilize this project to elucidate how media centered on professional basketball continue to partake in hegemonic and essentialist rhetoric surrounding Black and White masculinity—that which has been used to discuss Black and White men in basketball throughout the entire history of the sport—to homogenize mixed-race Black/White men in the NBA and present them in a way that diminishes the potentially deconstructive …

Non-intrusive solutions for communication through a sealed metal vessel requires the use of piezoelectric transducers to transmit acoustic waves through the vessel wall. This approach suffers the disadvantage of compromised security because a potential eavesdropper could decipher the correlation between digital and electric signals of both sides of the system. One solution is a mixed physics system employing magnetostrictive transducers.

For a magnetostrictive transducer to work well in this application, it would have to have a high piezomagnetic constant. This is influenced by soft magnetism and saturation magnetostriction. Nickel-Iron-Cobalt alloys are modified to retain their soft magnetic properties while increasing …

The research examines the application of extremum seeking control (ESC) algorithms to ground station antenna pointing for extremely high frequency (EHF) communication systems. ESC algorithms search for local maxima or minima by locating where an objective function gradient goes to zero. With wireless communication expanding into higher frequencies, the ground station pointing requirement is increasing. ESC presents a method which utilizes available equipment and information to perform ground station pointing. Wildfires significantly contribute to water pollution when ash and sediments, including nutrients and metals, are released into fluvial systems, impacting aquatic ecosystems and surrounding communities. This study focuses on the impacts of the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire on the Gallinas and Pecos watersheds. It employs five monitoring stations along a 190km fluvial network to assess solute export regimes post-fire, where grab samples were collected for nutrient and metal analyses for a period of more than a year. We investigate a novel side-channel attack countermeasure called Side-channel Power analysis Resistance for Encryption Algorithms using Dynamic partial reconfiguration (SPREAD). The countermeasure leverages a strategy that is best characterized as a moving target architecture. Modern field-programmable gate array (FPGA) architectures provide support for dynamic partial reconfiguration (DPR), a feature that allows real-time reconfiguration of portions of the programmable logic (PL) while the FPGA continues to carry out computing tasks. Humans can leverage domain context to recognize novel patterns and categories based on limited known examples. In contrast, computational learning methods are not adept at exploiting context and require sufficient labeled examples to achieve similar accuracy. Many temporal data domain, for example, seismic signals and oil mining sensor data, requires domain expert annotation, which is both costly and time-consuming. In everyday communication, speakers go beyond words to synchronize speech sounds and gestures, adding nuanced meanings. For instance, in Colombian Spanish, recounting the distant past involves elongating words, modulating pitch, and using expressive hand movements. This dissertation explores this phenomenon, termed Multimodal Iconic Expressions (MMIEs), using Cognitive Linguistics and Cognitive Grammar. The quantitative study uncovers correlations between verb aspect, nominal quantification, and speech duration, revealing phono-iconic connections. The qualitative study examines construal operations giving rise to MMIEs across semantic domains. Within this research, I have developed a microneedle-based wearable sensor for plants and fungi, to measure the electrical impedance of different tissues. Electrical impedance measures the physical properties of a material while allowing complex biological systems to be modeled onto a simplified electrical circuit. Microneedles allow for electrical impedance to measure specific tissues without the insulative properties of the cuticle and can be applied to delicate tissues. A predictive density law has been implemented and developed into a Python tool to reduce bias and the high degree of conservatism in criticality safety calculations for aqueous plutonium chloride systems. Based upon available data and parameters, an empirical method was used to create this law. This method was used in the development of a Python tool to predict the density and composition of such a solution, which may then populate material data in an MCNP6 input file.

This work addresses three fundamental questions. First, can the source of the advice (crowd or single advisor) be leveraged to enhance advice use? Second, does high skill and high metacognitive ability predict greater advice use or are these individuals also blind to the need for advice? Finally, can personality, performance, and pre-advice confidence factors be used to profile those most likely to benefit from advice? Results indicated surprisingly low advice taking rates (~25% to ~26%) from both advisors, despite the advice being 100% accurate. Aging in humans is a topic of much research with still more to be learned. The study in this paper attempts to answer the question of whether age affects EPOC when performing a certain exercise. The performance of the mid-wave infrared InGaAs/InAsSb nBn photodetector is investigated and its viability for space applications is assessed. Three structures are grown with unique absorber layer doping profiles via molecular beam epitaxy. Material and device characterizations are performed and analyzed to determine the effects of doping on fundamental material parameters and detector performance. Noise-equivalent irradiance is calculated to be a factor of 4x that of an ideal detector exhibiting Rule 07 dark current and 100% quantum efficiency, demonstrating high sensitivity. In my dissertation, I argue that Hegel, Adorno, and Horkheimer develop theories of modern sacrifice grounded in their critiques of modern reason—what Hegel calls “the Understanding” and Adorno and Horkheimer call “instrumental reason.” I contend that these thinkers recognize the process of rational cognition, which abstracts conceptual data from empirical reality and establishes the dominance of the universal over particular phenomena, as a sacrificial process—a view supported by their routine description of this process using the language of violence and death. Las Huertas in the Sandia Mountains relies on snowmelt, monsoonal recharge, and groundwater inputs. Our hypothesis, the proportion of groundwater contribution varied spatially and temporally, was assessed by observing travertine and multiple geochemical tracers to differentiate water balance components. We report 26 samples from 13 locations (sampled between 2021-2023). Major ion and isotopic analysis indicated Las Huertas headsprings vary spatially. Capulin Spring has higher salinity; major ions suggest recharged waters are a mix of CaCO3-rich and sulfate-chloride-containing water.
