"Invariant Imbedding" And Wave Propagation In Inhomogeneous Media, Crawford J. Maccallum Dec 1961

"Invariant Imbedding" And Wave Propagation In Inhomogeneous Media, Crawford J. Maccallum

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

We wish now to address ourselves to that problem which can be described in physical terms as the reflection and transmission of "waves" by and through some sort of "transition region" between two homogeneous media. At this stage we will work strictly within one dimension; later on this severe restriction will be somewhat eased. For simplicity of notation we will for the present give the transition region a finite thickness h; later on we will often allow h to become infinite when the disturbance due to the transition region dies away fast enough with distance.

Cortical Localization Of Handedness In The Rat, Luther W. Rook Dec 1961

Cortical Localization Of Handedness In The Rat, Luther W. Rook

Psychology ETDs

This study is a continuation of the Peterson handedness studies. Basically, these studies seek a means to investigate the nature of the neural equivalent of practice. Many investigators are interested in this problem, among them the conditioned reflexologists. They, however, have failed to identify any neural equivalent because they have failed to localize a conditioned reflex...

It should be emphasized that the primary concern of this and previous handedness studies is not with handedness per se. Handedness is a highly useful and sensitive means of determining the functionality of a small part of the nervous system. The objective of …

An Investigation Of Indeterminate Structures Stressed Beyond The Proportional Limit, Jack B. Joyce Nov 1961

An Investigation Of Indeterminate Structures Stressed Beyond The Proportional Limit, Jack B. Joyce

Civil Engineering ETDs

In the structural field the methods of designing have been geared to the development of materials...In a more current appraisal we see steel and concrete being updated still further. Pre-stressed concrete is a common sight in present day construction work and, to a lesser extent, the educated eye sees rigid frames designed to ultimate load criteria. Here again are cases where materials are studied and found to possess characteristics that are adaptable to advance methods. The key to all such improvements is still the realization and utilization of material properties.

The Reading Achievement Of Eleventh And Twelfth Grade Indian Students And A Survey Of Curricular Changes Indicated For The Improved Teaching Of Reading In The Public High Schools Of New Mexico, Irving D. Townsend

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The indigenous natives of the Western Hemisphere known as Amerinds, are endowed with numerous Mongolian characteristics indicating the racial stock from which they have derived. Today, those Amerinds residing in North America are known as American Indians, whose numbers total well over 400,000 in the United States. Of this total there are some 110. 000 living in the Southwest of which over 45,000 reside in New Mexico. This Indian population broadly includes a portion of the Navajo Tribe, which constitutes the greater percentage of the total, the Apaches, and the numerous groups of Pueblo Indians. There were undoubtedly earlier probes …

Long-Range Particles From Nuclear Fission, Ralph A. Nobles Oct 1961

Long-Range Particles From Nuclear Fission, Ralph A. Nobles

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This work is concerned with experimental observations of the long-range particles which are occasionally emitted by fissioning nuclei. These particles are known to be principally alpha particles and are of interest because they are associated with the configuration of the nucleus at the crucial time of scission. Observations were made of the energy spectra of long-range particles by means of a thallium-activated multiple CsI crystal scintillator device.

An Acoustic Simulator For Modeling Backscatter Of Electromagnetic Waves, Allen R. Edison Sep 1961

An Acoustic Simulator For Modeling Backscatter Of Electromagnetic Waves, Allen R. Edison

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Model experiments are commonly employed in situations where a full-scale experiment is uneconomical and where exact theoretical analysis is very difficult. The physical problem is scaled to convenient laboratory dimensions and a means is provided for controlling and measuring the parameters of the experiment. Measurements made in the model system are required to provide information on the time and space variations of functions which describe the real system. When interpreting results it is frequently necessary to consider "scale effects" which arise from certain parameters exerting a different influence in the model than in the real system.

Propagation Between Conducting And Nonconducting Media, Richard H. Williams Sep 1961

Propagation Between Conducting And Nonconducting Media, Richard H. Williams

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This paper contains a study of the electromagnetic fields caused by electric dipoles located within a highly conductive medium such as the sea. The theoretical treatment of this problem was begun in 1951 with Moore's thesis. "The Theory of Radio Communication between Submerged Submarines." Some subsequent major theoretical treatments of this problem have been published by Wait and Campbell, Lien, Banos and Wesley, and Anderson. All of the above work stems from Sommerfeld's classic paper published in 1909 where he considers the fields in the air caused by a vertical electric antenna located on the interface between the air and …

Taxonomy And Ecology Of Fresh-Water Ostracods Of South-Central Texas, Charles Davidson Wise Sep 1961

Taxonomy And Ecology Of Fresh-Water Ostracods Of South-Central Texas, Charles Davidson Wise

Biology ETDs

The Ostracoda (Gk. ostrakon, a shell, and eidos, form) are extremely interesting crustaceans that differ from most crustaceans in possessing strongly calcified, bivalve carapaces, Ostracods occur in great abundance in all types of waters, both marine and non-marine. With the exception of very transient waters, probably as many as 90% or more of the bodies of fresh water in North America contain ostracods. Because the carapaces are easily fossilized, ostracods are abundant in deposits ranging from the Ordovician to the present.

An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Asphalt Stabilized Sand In Triaxial Compression Testing, Joseph P. Callahan Aug 1961

An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Asphalt Stabilized Sand In Triaxial Compression Testing, Joseph P. Callahan

Civil Engineering ETDs

More and more in highway construction, the engineer is faced with the problem of locating satisfactory materials to be used in the construction of highways. This problem has become very critical in the selection of a satisfactory aggregate to be used in many phases of the construction. In large metropolitan areas and in other regions of the United States unblessed with an abundance of this aggregate, it was found that where once there was no shortage of suitable material, the supplies have now been practically exhausted.

The Production Of Voluntary Response Gradients Of Stimulus Generalization In The Absence Of Reinforced Discrimination Learning, Donald T. Tosti Aug 1961

The Production Of Voluntary Response Gradients Of Stimulus Generalization In The Absence Of Reinforced Discrimination Learning, Donald T. Tosti

Psychology ETDs

The experiments reported in this paper were performed to test the hypothesis that stimulus generalization with voluntary responses can be shown in the absence of reinforced stimulus discrimination. There are two important distinctions which together differentiate these experiments from most of the previous studies in this area.

First, the methods utilized here require no discrimination between stimuli during acquisition of the response; i.e., S does not discriminate between the CS and test stimuli during acquisition. In contrast, the majority of studies of stimulus generalization with human S's employing voluntary responses have contained this problem, which is not present in …

A Study Of A Nonlinear Compensation Network In A Feedback Control System, John F. Taylor Aug 1961

A Study Of A Nonlinear Compensation Network In A Feedback Control System, John F. Taylor

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This paper is a study of the effect of a nonlinear compensation network on the closed-loop response of a feedback control system.

Physical energy dissipation elements, unlike their usual mathematical models, are often nonlinear. An example of such a nonlinear element is the mechanical damper. Since dissipation elements are used in most types of compensation, the problem of nonlinear compensation is an important one.

The study was performed with two goals in mind. The first was to determine the detrimental effects resulting from the insertion of the nonlinear network. The second was to see if any improvement in system performance …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1932 Campaign Speaking, Robert C. Dick Aug 1961

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1932 Campaign Speaking, Robert C. Dick

Communication ETDs

It is a truism that economic adversity tends to undermine the popularity of the political party in control of the presidency. In the year 1932 America was in the midst of her worst economic depression. Franklin Delano Roosevelt used this situation to win support of his own candidacy. He waged an aggressive campaign against Republican leadership.

The Judgment Of Intelligence From Photographs, Charlene Diver Fredenburgh Aug 1961

The Judgment Of Intelligence From Photographs, Charlene Diver Fredenburgh

Psychology ETDs

Between 1918 and 1933 several studies appeared in which the ability of a person to make judgments of intelligence from photographs was assessed. The topic has not been pursued since then, despite the inadequacies of these early studies. These investigations found that, on the average, the ability of individuals to judge the Intelligence of pictured persons is either nonexistent or low.

A Shell-Theory Analysis Of Transient Thermal Stresses In Moderately Thick-Walled Cylinders, Thomas K. Mckinley Aug 1961

A Shell-Theory Analysis Of Transient Thermal Stresses In Moderately Thick-Walled Cylinders, Thomas K. Mckinley

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

This paper investigates the validity of extending the concepts of shell theory to transient thermoelastic problems involving moderately thick-walled shells. The region of study is a moderately thick-walled cylinder which is constrained radially at both ends and is exposed to a uniform, time-dependent heating (or cooling) at one end. The cylinder walls are assumed to be adiabatic, and inertia effects are neglected in the development.

It is concluded from the results of this investigation that the extension of shell theory to moderately thick-walled cylindrical regions subjected to axial, time-dependent temperature variations is an analytical method of approach.

Le Grand Translateur: The Theory And Practice Of Ezra Pound In Selected Translations, Peter H. Ohlin Jul 1961

Le Grand Translateur: The Theory And Practice Of Ezra Pound In Selected Translations, Peter H. Ohlin

English Language and Literature ETDs

The present study does not pretend to be a definitive study of Pond's translations. It will, however, try to outline the main points about Pound as a translator. It will discuss, first of all, Pound's statements about translating as a craft as well as on his own translations and those of others, and try to define--if only tentatively--Pound's major principles of translations. It will discuss specifically some of Pound's translations, chosen not always because they are the most representative, but because the present writer is able to examine them. This part will include translations from the German, from the Anglo-Saxon, …

Charles Godfrey Leland: The American Years, 1824-1869, Ralph Carlisle Smith Jul 1961

Charles Godfrey Leland: The American Years, 1824-1869, Ralph Carlisle Smith

American Studies ETDs

In view of the frequent reliance on Leland's books and articles, I have, on the suggestion of my graduate committee, attempted in this dissertation to evaluate Leland and his writings in order to establish some basis for the accuracy of his statements and the general reliability of Leland as a witness. I have also presented many of his views expressed in books and papers not readily available to or often considered by other students of his times. Though the initial approach to this study of Leland was made objectively or, if subjectively, only sympathetically prejudicial, I must admit that with …

This study is limited to the public school administrators of the state of New Mexico.

A Critical Study Of John Milton's On The Morning Of Christ's Nativity, Daniel Patterson Jun 1961

A Critical Study Of John Milton's On The Morning Of Christ's Nativity, Daniel Patterson

English Language and Literature ETDs

One can hardly avoid, in writing a critical study of John Milton's On the Morning of Christ's Nativity, the sense of having been preceded by a sizable vanguard of scholars. Upon Virtually every tree there is a blaze, in nearly every trail a footprint. But without the successes, failures, guesses and assertions of those who have gone before him, the aspiring critic of so complex a poem might return without ever having sighted his quarry. Criticism of Milton's Hymn has not been remarkable for any deviation from the common patterns of literary scholarships during the past centuries. In fact, …

Statehood For New Mexico, 1888-1912, Robert W. Larson Jun 1961

Statehood For New Mexico, 1888-1912, Robert W. Larson

History ETDs

Because of her long history, far more tumultuous and varied than that of the other territories; and her culture, so different from all the rest of the United States, New Mexico was the most intriguing and challenging of the western territories. Modern American history has paralleled this unique past by showing that New Mexico, along with her sister territory Arizona, fought the longest and most complex battle for statehood. In the 1880's New Mexico was one of the many territories in the western domain in the United States. In fact, statehood in the west was the exception rather than the …

Evaluation Of The Thermal Properties Of Plastic Laminates, Luciano Sedillo Jun 1961

Evaluation Of The Thermal Properties Of Plastic Laminates, Luciano Sedillo

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

To insure the proper application of newly developed materials, it is necessary to evaluate their physical and chemical properties. In the case of plastic laminates for use as heat barrier material, thermal diffusivity is an important property. Thermal diffusivity is the parameter which governs the rate of temperature change through a material. Its value depends upon the chemical composition and the physical structure of the material and its temperature.
