Black Response To Anti-Semitism: Negroes And Jews In New York, 1880 To World War Ii, Isabel Boiko Price Dec 1973

Black Response To Anti-Semitism: Negroes And Jews In New York, 1880 To World War Ii, Isabel Boiko Price

History ETDs

This study examines the presumption that black antipathy to the Jews represents a recent and tragic shift in Negro-Jewish relations in New York City. Through research into written material supplemented by oral interviews, it attempts to examine attitudes, encounters, and situations which shed light on the history of Negro-Jewish relations from 1880 to 1943. The study begins during the closing years of the 19th century when large numbers of East European Jews and the van- guard of southern blacks both made their exodus to New York.

The Negro's first response to the Jew was to notice a parallel with his …

Synchrony, Amalgam And Communion: Erico Verissimo's O Tempo E O Vento As Symbolic Complex, Louis L. Ollivier Jr. Dec 1973

Synchrony, Amalgam And Communion: Erico Verissimo's O Tempo E O Vento As Symbolic Complex, Louis L. Ollivier Jr.

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Erico Verissimo's O Tempo e o Vento has long been considered his masterpiece more, it would seem, by dint of its quantity than its quality, since relatively little research has been done on this novel. The attitudes reflected in O Tempo e o Vento concerning the relationship of time and space and man's affiliation thereto have been previously ignored and only through a structuralist analysis of this novel have these determinations been discovered.

The structuralist approach comprises certain inherent assumptions of an a priori system of knowledge. One assumption is reflected in the structure of language which presupposes for all …

The Possibility Of Evil: The Fiction Of Shirley Jackson, John Gordon Parks Dec 1973

The Possibility Of Evil: The Fiction Of Shirley Jackson, John Gordon Parks

American Studies ETDs

The dissertation is a critical study of the fiction of Shirley Jackson. It uses a story published shortly after her death in 1965 to express the key to the main themes and concerns of her fiction: "The Possibility of Evil." It is the thesis of the study that Shirley Jackson's fiction portrays the many incognitoes of evil and the demonic in contemporary life. Through the use of gothic conventions Jackson reveals the contours of human madness and loneliness in a disintegrating world generally bereft of the meliorating power of love and forgiveness.

Each of her six novels is treated fully: …

Late Industrialization And Political Change: The Case Of Germany, Judith C. Peloquin Dec 1973

Late Industrialization And Political Change: The Case Of Germany, Judith C. Peloquin

Sociology ETDs

The advance of industrialization and the process of modernization in all countries produced significant shifts in the distribution of wealth and massively affected existing relations of power. The transition from the pre-industrial to the modern world is examined in Germany in an effort, to explore the causal factors which facilitated the rise of a fascist political system in Germany, while democratic and communistic political systems resulted in other countries. Barrington Moore's theory of the coalition of economic interests that forms as a result of the inherited social structure remaining from feudal organizations is utilized to explain the rise of the …

A Comparison Of Aphasic And Non-Brain Injured Adults On A Dichotic Cv-Syllable Listening Task, Janet E. Shanks Dec 1973

A Comparison Of Aphasic And Non-Brain Injured Adults On A Dichotic Cv-Syllable Listening Task, Janet E. Shanks

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

Normal listeners traditionally show a right ear preference for dichotically presented speech stimuli, and a left ear preference for dichotically presented non-speech stimuli. Although some inter-subject variability is observed within and between groups of non-brain damaged subjects, the performance of the group as a whole is rather predictable and homogeneous. However, results from experiments in which brain damaged subjects have been studied have been less straightforward. Although left brain damaged subjects have consistently shown a bilateral deficit in reporting dichotic speech stimuli, a great deal of variability in performance is observed within the groups. Further study of brain damaged individuals, …

Right-Left Visual Field Performances Of Congenitally Deaf And Normal Hearing Subjects, Merle Applebaum-Rosenberg Dec 1973

Right-Left Visual Field Performances Of Congenitally Deaf And Normal Hearing Subjects, Merle Applebaum-Rosenberg

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

The notion of cerebral dominance has been explored since the time of Broca. Two non-invasive techniques designed to assess hemispheric dominance have subsequently been developed. These two methods are commonly referred to as dichotic listening (simultaneous auditory stimulation) and rapid visual field stimulation (tachistoscopic viewing).

It has been found in dichotic listening studies that when verbal material is presented simultaneously to both ears, the stimuli are correctly identified most often in the right ear. Similar results have been found in tachistoscopic studies, with verbal material eliciting a right visual field advantage. Collectively, these findings have been used to support a …

A Photographic Study Of The Infrared Oh Airglow, G. C. Loos

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

OH airglow is due to the rotational-vibrational transitions of the hydroxyl radical. Previous efforts to find the airglow's emission height in the atmosphere are discussed. Photography of the infrared airglow with a fast 35mm camera and Eastman Kodak high speed infrared film is described and a method for triangulating emission heights by two station photography is explained. The techniques for reduction of film data to height measurements and velocity measurements are presented. Observations are reported concerning the frequency of occurrence of bright spots and other features on the OH background and the intensity of the airglow as a function of …

Effect Of Presentation By Ear On Word Recognition Of Aphasic Patients In A Delayed Matching Task, David D. Peterson Nov 1973

Effect Of Presentation By Ear On Word Recognition Of Aphasic Patients In A Delayed Matching Task, David D. Peterson

Psychology ETDs

The purpose of the experiment was to investigate the effects of two primary conditions, presentation by ear and intratrial delay, on word recognition of subjects with receptive aphasia. The first condition consisted of words presented monaurally to the right and left ears, and binaurally. The second condition consisted of several values of delay inserted between the test word and visual choices. The effects of these variables were determined under noun and verb stimulus conditions. Results indicated that subjects with posterior brain-damage showed a monaural ear asymmetry with the right ear resulting in less accurate word recognition. Both ears combined gave …

The Effect Of Thermoradiation On Bacterial Spores In Wet And Dry Systems, Thomas J. David Nov 1973

The Effect Of Thermoradiation On Bacterial Spores In Wet And Dry Systems, Thomas J. David

Biology ETDs

Spores of Bacillus subtilis var. niger and Clostridium sporogenes were exposed to heat and radiation, separately, and in simultaneous combination. The spores were subjected to treatment under two sets of conditions. Wet spores were suspended in water during treatment, while spores in the dry state were treated in air which had a relative humidity of about 30% at room temperature. Treatment with ionizing radiation at room temperature was found to be more effective in the dry than the wet state, in contrast to most theories and some research in that area. Bacillus subtilis var. niger was more resistant to heat …

Water samples were collected from five sites in the Rio Grande between Isleta Pueblo and Bernardo, New Mexico. Of 80 river samples, 19 (23.8%) were found to contain Salmonella. A total of 16 serotypes of Salmonella enteritidis were isolated. Salmonella were most frequently isolated in July, August, and September. A seasonal pattern was observed in which the numbers of fecal coliforms and fecal streptococci, and Salmonella isolations …

The Verbal Learning Effect In Recognition And Recall Memory For Verbal Stimuli, E. Chandler Shumate Sep 1973

The Verbal Learning Effect In Recognition And Recall Memory For Verbal Stimuli, E. Chandler Shumate

Psychology ETDs

Three experiments were conducted to test the effects of associative training with representative and nonrepresentative responses upon stimulus recognition and, more importantly, stimulus recall. In Exp. I, is were required to learn, in six study-test trials, one of two P A lists composed of twelve stimulus items (trigram doublets) either high or low in meaningfulness (M). Half the stimuli in each list were paired with representative responses, the other half were paired with nonrepresentative responses. The results, obtained from a two-item, forced-choice recognition test, showed that performance was positively related to stimulus M, and the facilitating effect of associative training …

The Relationship Between Mean Magnitude Of Reward And Partial, Varied, And Continuous Schedules Of Reinforcement, James E. Schroeder Aug 1973

The Relationship Between Mean Magnitude Of Reward And Partial, Varied, And Continuous Schedules Of Reinforcement, James E. Schroeder

Psychology ETDs

A model was described that combines Grice's variable threshold model for reaction time and Logan's incentive theory for response speed in instrumental conditioning in an attempt to account for the relative performance of rats receiving continuous (CRF), varied (VRF), or partial (PRF) reinforcement. The essence of the model is that incentive motivation depends on the mean amount of reward previously received, as well as upon the S's distance from the goal, that incentive motivation can be interpreted as affecting the mean threshold for responding, and that the greater the variability in reward the greater the variability in the threshold.

This …

Dimensional Preference Effects In Recall Memory, C. Jean Rogers Aug 1973

Dimensional Preference Effects In Recall Memory, C. Jean Rogers

Psychology ETDs

Dimensional preference in six-year-olds was investigated by the use of a series of recall memory tasks in which the amount of information available in the stimuli and the nature of the feedback provided were systematically varied. The results suggested that low preference does not necessarily imply that the dimension will fail to be processed nor does it appear that the presence of a more preferred dimension prevents processing of a less preferred dimension. Rather, the results indicated that processing and recall of the various dimensions of a stimulus were a function of dimension preference, amount of information available in the …

A Comparison Of Two Methods Of Speech Reception Threshold Measurement, Richard Allen Oge Aug 1973

A Comparison Of Two Methods Of Speech Reception Threshold Measurement, Richard Allen Oge

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

In an attempt to discover the current methods being utilized in clinical audiology, Martin and Pennington (1971) surveyed a large number of audiologists concerning their administration of the hearing tests available to them. One of the findings of this survey indicates that a number of different procedures are being used to obtain the speech

reception threshold (SRT). This fact strongly suggest that the SRT estimate obtained on a given subject may vary between clinics, not because of the subject's hearing sensitivity but because of the audiologist and his procedure of acquiring this measure.

Towards Becoming Bilingual -- Cognitive And Semantic Considerations On Language Acquisition, Gnaneswaran Thiruraj Perinpanayagam Jul 1973

Towards Becoming Bilingual -- Cognitive And Semantic Considerations On Language Acquisition, Gnaneswaran Thiruraj Perinpanayagam

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Language learning is both culture-bound and individual-skill-bound, structured on an innate, biological capacity to acquire language. While it is a remarkable phenomenon when it occurs in the acquisition of a first language, it is even more remarkable in the acquisition of a second language where the main objective concerning competence is to bring the two languages into equilibrium. This equilibrium does not result in a final co-ordinate bilingual, which is only an abstract ideal. It is, rather, the complex bilingualism - the only bilingualism it is possible to demonstrate - and the equilibrium is judged on the needs and purposes …

Alternate Monaural Loudness Balance For Tones With Different Duty Cycles, Sharon Ann Dixon Jul 1973

Alternate Monaural Loudness Balance For Tones With Different Duty Cycles, Sharon Ann Dixon

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

The effect of duty cycle, or the percentage of time a signal is presented, upon the perceived loudness of a pulsed tone was studied utilizing an alternate monaural loudness balance technique. The single ear was employed in an attempt to eliminate any possible artifacts of binaural interaction upon the perceived loudness of pulsed signals.

The factors under investigation included: the difference in duty cycle between a fixed-intensity reference signal and a variable-intensity comparison signal; the use of a relatively high versus a relatively low duty cycle reference signal; and the effect of time after commencement of the loudness balances. Differences …

The purpose of this study was to describe experiential awareness as an existential approach to psychotherapy with adolescents in groups. Integrated within the study were the critical issues of the nature and behavior of the therapist in the psychotherapeutic encounter with adolescents. Review of the literature on adolescent psychology pertinent to the practice of adolescent psychotherapy suggested that when adolescents experience "identity crisis," peer group therapy is appropriate. The major propositions, assumptions, and applications of experiential awareness therapy relevant to adolescent therapy groups were examined. The use of therapist journal notes was presented to illustrate the therapist's experience in the …

Verbal Operant Conditioning And Response-Reinforcement Contingency Awareness, Val R. Smith Jul 1973

Verbal Operant Conditioning And Response-Reinforcement Contingency Awareness, Val R. Smith

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

The following problem was investigated: can persons be conditioned to emit a verbal response without their awareness of the response-reinforcement contingency? It was hypothesized that when a “set to problem solve,” is not induced and experimenter effect due to the subjectexperimenter interaction is eliminated, subjects are conditioned to emit a verbal response without an accompanying contingency awareness. Three experiments were conducted in order to test the hypothesis. In experiment 1 an attempt was made to condition vocal response length using a visual reinforcer. In experiments 2 and 3 an attempt was made to condition use of specific pronouns using a …

Le Motif De L'Etoile Dans Les Oeuvres De GéRard De Nerval., Shelley Gregory Crowe

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

A study of the star motif in the works of Gérard de Nerval brings out stylistic diversity and stylistic development in the works of the period 1841 through 1854. Before this time the star is hardly mentioned in the work of Nerval.

During the period between 1841 and 1843, Nerval underwent two important experiences. The first such experience is the mental crisis of 1841 during which he was hospitalized for the first time for such an illness. The second experience is the voyage to the Orient, a trip lasting the entire year of 1843. These two events can be seen …
