Transit Connector: A Study Of Cargo Terminals For United States Shipping Lines, Inc., William H. Cary May 1967

Transit Connector: A Study Of Cargo Terminals For United States Shipping Lines, Inc., William H. Cary

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The most costly factor in modern shipping is the quantity of time involved in the discharging and loading of cargo. The earning capacity of a ship depends largely on the rapidity of its turn-around or the number of voyages it can make in a year, and the turn-around can be increased to a large extent only by preventing delay in port. For a successful operation the ship's time in port must be as brief as possible. Whether at sea or in port, all the major items of expense, with the exception of fuel consumption, continue day in and out. Major …

Proposed Air Freight Facilities For Albuquerque, New Mexico, Josue Martinez May 1967

Proposed Air Freight Facilities For Albuquerque, New Mexico, Josue Martinez

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Many citizens of Albuquerque, New Mexico, recognize the significant development that has taken place in their community since World War II. While this progress is commendable, it should be further recognized that nearly all activity has been initiated and contained by the Federal Government. In a study done by the Fourth-Year Architecture Design class of 1966, information collected suggests that Albuquerque can continue to lead in research and development as its primary industry.

Input And Output Speed Components Of Learning-To-Learn, Jon G. Rogers May 1967

Input And Output Speed Components Of Learning-To-Learn, Jon G. Rogers

Psychology ETDs

Input and output speed were investigated to determine if they were components of learning-to-learn. The major criterion used to distinguish learning-to-learn from warm-up has generally (e.g. Hamilton, 1950) been the temporal persistence of learning-to-learn phenomena.

Sixteen paired-associate practice lists consisting of high frequency words were presented for two trials to four acquisition groups in two sessions a day apart. Each acquisition group received input at either a fast (2 sec.) or slow (5 sec.) rate. Input speed (i.e., study interval) was the time the stimulus-response unit appeared. Subjects were required to respond to a light occurring at either a fast …

The Preservation Of Art, Architecture And Artifacts Of Trampas, New Mexico, Louise A. Harris May 1967

The Preservation Of Art, Architecture And Artifacts Of Trampas, New Mexico, Louise A. Harris

Art & Art History ETDs

Trampas, a small village in mountainous northern New Mexico, is extremely well-preserved, both architecturally and culturally. This excellent state of preservation results from its isolated position. Trampas has retained the character of a Spanish-Mexican town of the nineteenth century, a rarity even in New Mexico which has not yet been subjected to the massive industrialization found in other parts of the United States.

Completion And Compactification Functors For Cauchy Spaces, James Francis Ramaley May 1967

Completion And Compactification Functors For Cauchy Spaces, James Francis Ramaley

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

The subject of this thesis is topological but the approach is categorical. We consider the approach as important as the subject itself and so we try to indicate whenever we have a categorically defined concept. In fact, we are led by this approach to make definitions and constructions so that certain relationships are categorical in nature. Our coreflective completion functor of Chapter IV is one example of this approach.

We wish here to give a brief outline of the historical development of convergence theory and how category theory has come to play a role in this development...

An Investigation Of The Kolmogorov-Smirnov Method Of Data Validation To Reduce Buyer Inspection Costs., John R. Costello May 1967

An Investigation Of The Kolmogorov-Smirnov Method Of Data Validation To Reduce Buyer Inspection Costs., John R. Costello

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

One of the major functions of any inspection, quality control or quality assurance organization is to provide assurance to management that their products are of adequate quality. Furthermore, management desires this function to be performed at the minimum cost commensurate with its objectives. It has been reported that inspection organizations used sampling inspection prior to 1920 to achieve their objectives but the sampling plans used were arbitrary with little scientific basis. During the 1920's the Western Electric Company made a major breakthrough with the development of the Shewhart control chart and the Dodge-Romig sampling tables. However, it was not until …

An Initial Evaluation Of A Sixth Grade Group's Attitude Toward Art Using A Semantic Differential Instrument., Nancy Carnohan

Art & Art History ETDs

The purpose of this descriptive research was twofold. The investigator wanted to test objectively the attitudes of the preadolescent child toward art. (The term ''preadolescent ', as well as other terms associated with and peculiar to the field of the present research paper, are defined in the glossary of terms on page 164-166.) One of the main problems was finding a valid objective test. Research was done in the field of the semantic differential instrument. After long and intensive study, it was decided to use this instrument on a preadolescent group. The results of the data obtained in this investigation …

Surface-Wave Phenomena At Liquid-Air Interfaces, Robert H. Dungan May 1967

Surface-Wave Phenomena At Liquid-Air Interfaces, Robert H. Dungan

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The purpose of this investigation was to continue the study of surface wave phenomena initiated by Woodward and Bryant. [l], [2] Woodward, using an experimental arrangement similar to that shown in Fig. 3, observed that the intensity of light measured above, but parallel to, the reflected beam was a very sharp function of the incident beam angle at the critical angle. They also observed that the light intensity above the reflected beam decreased exponentially as the detector was moved away from the reflected beam in the plane of incidence. They reported characteristic lengths for the exponential decay constant of 9.6 …

The Effect Of Associative Factors On Generalization Gradients In Shape Recognition, Robert L. Feuge May 1967

The Effect Of Associative Factors On Generalization Gradients In Shape Recognition, Robert L. Feuge

Psychology ETDs

It is generally observed that positive transfer will ensue from an A-B, A-C paradigm, provided the responses, B and C, are sufficiently different so as to minimize interlist confusion (Arnoult, 1957; Ellis, 1965). This paradigm, known as the "stimulus predifferentiation paradigm", produces positive transfer presumably because pretraining on relevant stimuli (A) differentiates the stimuli, making them less "confusing" or more "distinctive". This enhanced distinctiveness increases the ease with which new responses may be attached to the stimuli.

An Analysis Of Transmitted Signal Distortion Resulting From Antenna To Reflecting Surface Velocity., J. Philip Castillo May 1967

An Analysis Of Transmitted Signal Distortion Resulting From Antenna To Reflecting Surface Velocity., J. Philip Castillo

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This paper presents a stud of the distortion of a transmitted signal due to Doppler frequency spreading and amplitude modulation as a consequence of the relative velocity between the transmitter and a reflecting surface.

The Doppler effect is a well-known phenomenon associated with the apparent compression, or length of the transmitted signal wave-length, resulting from a positive or negative relative velocity between a transmitter and receiver. In this thesis one of the problems will be the determination of the degree of frequency spreading due to a finite antenna beam width as the transmitter approaches a reflecting surface at a constant …

A Comparative Study Of Antonin Artuad's Play Les Cenci, Anne-Marie Denes Apr 1967

A Comparative Study Of Antonin Artuad's Play Les Cenci, Anne-Marie Denes

English Language and Literature ETDs

The purpose of this paper is to present a historical and critical introduction to Antonin Artaud’s play Les Cenci (1935). The first part of the paper will consist, therefore, of a comparative study of four versions of the story of Beatrice Cenci (1577-1599) and her family. One is the historical account as related by John Addington Symonds in his book Renaissance in Italy. The second is the legendary account as it emerges from Stendhal’s translation from an old Italian chronicle dated, according to Stendhal, September 14, 1499 – three days after Beatrice’s execution. The third is Percy Bysshe Shelley’s tragedy …

The Susceptibility Of Price Declines Among High Quality Common Industrial Stocks And Other Listed Common Industrial Stocks During Significant Market Declines, Walter D. Sanborn, Iii Apr 1967

The Susceptibility Of Price Declines Among High Quality Common Industrial Stocks And Other Listed Common Industrial Stocks During Significant Market Declines, Walter D. Sanborn, Iii

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

All common stock investments are subject to market declines regardless of favorable prospects for growth of earnings, dividends, or other factors contributing to market performance. In times of significant market declines, even the highest quality stock with excellent appreciation potential may decline. A qualified security analyst may find that stock "XXX' is a high quality stock and recommend its purchase, but if the stock market falls, the competent investor will lose wealth, at least temporarily, in spite of his careful job of security analysis. If investors had an analytical tool to help predict these declines, they would be able to …

Price-Determining Factors In The Processed Fruit And Vegetable Industry, Charles H. Hatfield Jr. Apr 1967

Price-Determining Factors In The Processed Fruit And Vegetable Industry, Charles H. Hatfield Jr.

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

The lack of any firm basis for pricing decisions in the processed fruit and vegetables industry was first brought to my attention by contact with some executives of the California Packing Corporation where I was employed for two years. Their consensus was that available supply was the most important factor in such determination, even though its relationship to price was only realized in a vague, ever-shifting manner. It is hypothesized both that a substantial basis on which to place pricing decisions could be determined and further that a demand function, based on utility analysis, would provide such a description of …

The Development Of An Instrument For The Appraisal Of The Personnel Program In A School System, I V. Payne Apr 1967

The Development Of An Instrument For The Appraisal Of The Personnel Program In A School System, I V. Payne

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This study has attempted to develop an appraisal instrument to be used for determining the extent to which a selected sampling of desirable personnel practices has been incorporated as a part of the school's personnel program. It has entailed the systematic selection of a broad range of personnel policies and practices, categorizing them into a number of functional areas of personnel management, and then reducing the practices to a representative sampling which was used in the construction of the final appraisal instrument. The result has been the development of an appraisal device, designed as a self study instrument, to determine …

A Study Of The Genus Phacelia In New Mexico, Helen M. Bobisud Apr 1967

A Study Of The Genus Phacelia In New Mexico, Helen M. Bobisud

Biology ETDs

From Introduction:

Phacelia, the largest genus in the family Hydrophyllaceae, consists of some 150 to 200 species. The genus is heterogeneous and has undergone several revisions of both infrageneric organization and species classification. The type species is P. secunda J. F. Gmelin, Syst. 2:330. 1791.

In 1789. Jussieu assigned the genus to what is now the family Boraginaceae. Brown (see Edwards, 1817) assigned Phacelia to the order Hydrophylleae. In 1875 Asa Gray united the order Hydrophylleae with the family Hydroleae and formed the family Hydrophyllaceae. He divided the genus Phacelia into seven subgenera based on characteristics of ovules, seeds, and …

Crab Spiders (Araneida, Thomisidae) Associated With Plants In Central New Mexico., Daniel T. Jennings Apr 1967

Crab Spiders (Araneida, Thomisidae) Associated With Plants In Central New Mexico., Daniel T. Jennings

Biology ETDs

A total of 2,034 crab spiders, representing 1,899 juveniles and 135 adults, were collected chiefly by sweeping pure and mixed stands of plants in central New Mexico. The spiders collected belong to 24 taxa and include 17 species, Plant associations were determined for most of the species and compared with previously published records. The species of crab spiders collected seem to occur more frequently on grasses and composites than on any other kinds of plants. Juvenile crab spiders were found to have less plant specificity than do mature crab spiders. Six species, Coriarachne aemula, Misumenops californicus, Philodromus droseroides, Rhysodromus histiro …

Minority discontent would be a serious problem because it could threaten the long term plan for total integration of a unified, disciplined and highly industrialized China.

Some Observations On The Chemical Behavior Of Carrier-Free Iodine-131 And Dilute Carrier Iodine0127, Manning S. Reynolds Apr 1967

Some Observations On The Chemical Behavior Of Carrier-Free Iodine-131 And Dilute Carrier Iodine0127, Manning S. Reynolds

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Unexpected behavior by very small amounts of iodine has been noted by biochemical, medical, and ecological workers. It also has been shown that mild oxidation of carrier-free iodide-131 produced previously unknown species of iodine compounds. It was of interest to determine whether such species also result from the reduction of iodate.

While studying the formation of carrier-free iodate-131 by perchloric acid oxidation of iodide-131 at elevated temperatures, it was found that the acid is not directly responsible for the formation of iodate. Instead, the oxidation is accomplished by a volatile material (thought to be chlorine dioxide) formed only in perchloric …

An Inquiry Into The Role Of The Realization Concept In The Income Determination Process, Stephen E. Snyder Mar 1967

An Inquiry Into The Role Of The Realization Concept In The Income Determination Process, Stephen E. Snyder

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

It has become commonplace to refer to accounting as the language of business. This analogy is usually made to emphasize that accounting is, in part, a communication process. As a language, accounting attempts to communicate financial information about the business environment to interested parties. The receivers of accounting information can be classified into one of two broad groups: managers of business firms and parties outside of the firm. The problems involved in reporting to the two different groups are in many ways almost unrelated to each other.

The Art Of Living: A Preliminary Investigation Of Dr. Johnson's Attitude Toward Learning, Involving Primarily The Rambler, The Idler, And The Adventurer., Nancy C. Cotton Mar 1967

The Art Of Living: A Preliminary Investigation Of Dr. Johnson's Attitude Toward Learning, Involving Primarily The Rambler, The Idler, And The Adventurer., Nancy C. Cotton

English Language and Literature ETDs

In the Rambler, more than in the Idler and the Adventurer, Dr. Johnson continually recurs to the subject of learning. If he does not devote an entire essay to an aspect of learning, he may use an exemplary man of letters or a scholarly allusion to illustrate another unrelated subject. Profuse and disparate as these essays and illustrations are, there is enough material to theorize constructively about Johnson's attitude toward learning. This is very often that of an eighteenth-century religious humanist and a moral satirist. He sees the necessity for a revivification of the traditional ideals of learning, those of …
