Mexico's Thermidorian Reaction, 1940-1960., Kenneth S. Cott
Mexico's Thermidorian Reaction, 1940-1960., Kenneth S. Cott
Art & Art History ETDs
One of the fundamental characteristics of the great revolutions which have occurred from time to time in Western society is the period of reaction and return to normality known as the Thermidor. No nation has been able to maintain a revolution indefinitely. This paper deals with the Thermidorian reaction as it has developed in Mexico since the late 1930’s.
Students of the nature of revolution have discerned certain uniformities in the great upheavals of Western history. The object of this paper is to compare those uniformities as they relate to the Thermidorian reaction with the course which the Mexical Revolution …

An Experimental Spelling Program In Third Grade., Elizabeth U. Mixon
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Problem. This study was undertaken to discover if spelling would be improved if the words to be learned were based on some other area of the curriculum and were a natural outgrowth of the activities in that area, rather than an arbitrary list taken from the spelling workbook currently in use in the Albuquerque Public Schools.
Georgia And The Continental Congress, 1775-1782, Arthur S. Nichols
Georgia And The Continental Congress, 1775-1782, Arthur S. Nichols
History ETDs
Though claiming a large area, settled Georgia was a small colony, extending down the seacoast from its main port of Savannah and up the Savannah River to Augusta, with fewer than a dozen places that could be called towns. The British had carefully nurtured this colony since shortly before the final struggle with France for control of the North American continent in the middle of the eighteenth century. Most of the colony’s trade was with British; and it was prosperous, even though by 1774 the population was only about 35,000, of whom 15,000 were slaves.
Nuclear Quadrupole Relaxation., Derwin F. Brown
Nuclear Quadrupole Relaxation., Derwin F. Brown
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
A nucleus with an asymmetric charge distribution (an asymmetric arrangement of protons) exhibits a quadrupole moment which interacts with the gradient of the electric field of the surrounding electrons. The interaction energy is a function of the angle between the nuclear spin axis and the axis of the surrounding electric field. The nucleus processes about the electric field axis in quantized energy states. These quantized energy states correspond to a hyperfine splitting similar to the hyperfine structure of the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between the nucleus and the electrons. The application of an external electric field, oscillating at the processional frequency …
An Introduction To The Fundamentals Of Radiation Transport Theory., William A. Proctor
An Introduction To The Fundamentals Of Radiation Transport Theory., William A. Proctor
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
I first became interested in radiation transport theory when, in August 1966, I was given primary responsibility for a large computer program which serves as a tool for solving high temperature, time dependent, radiation-hydrodynamics problems. Inquiries as to where to start learning about this subject invariably resulted in my being directed to the two books by Chandrasekhar (1957 and 1960) and the book by Kourganoff (1963). From the beginning of my study of these expositions, I found it rather curious that a theory which treated the radiation field as continuously distributed in space was formulated in a manner which appeared …
The Relationship Of Anxiety, Intelligence And Reading Achievement, Margaret R. Fry
The Relationship Of Anxiety, Intelligence And Reading Achievement, Margaret R. Fry
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Educators have become more and more concerned with the emotional area in the lives of children. M special interest has been that of anxiety and its relationship to learning. Various scales have been developed to measure anxiety in children. Several investigators, such as Wrightman, Cox, Feather, Lunneborg, and Pachecho have made significant studies which show that anxiety or fear correlates negatively with achievement. Further, Phillips, Hindsman and Jennings,
Feldhusenand Klausmeier, Cauble, and others have shown that anxiety or fear and intelligence are negatively correlated. Grooms and Endler and Maltzman, Eisman, and Morrisett found contradictory results in that high anxiety did …
Problems Related To Selected Spanish Colonial Paintings In New Mexico., Louberta Ann Culley
Problems Related To Selected Spanish Colonial Paintings In New Mexico., Louberta Ann Culley
Art & Art History ETDs
The Spaniards were originally attracted to New Mexico by the prospect of finding great wealth. In the early sixteenth century, it was rumored that there were seven cities in the north with riches equaling that of the Aztec and Inca civilizations. These rumors were further exaggerated by Cabeza de Vaca and the survivor of the Narvaez expedition when they returned to Mexico City in 1536 and by the reports to Fray Marcos de Niza who led an exploration into Zuni territory in western New Mexico in 1S39. Coronado, however, gave a more accurate and prosaic description of the region after …
The Nicaraguan Ministry Of Education As A Social System., Raul E. Quintanilla
The Nicaraguan Ministry Of Education As A Social System., Raul E. Quintanilla
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Nicaragua is a country in the process of development. The Nicaraguan leaders are very conscious of the fact that the advancement of the nation depends largely upon the development of human resources. The key role in the development of human resource in is played by education. With the assistance of the U.S. Government, through the Agency for International Development (A.I.D.), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Nicaragua initiated plans for general reforms and reorganization of the existing educational system. Unfortunately, the outcomes have been very limited, if we consider the magnitude of the educational problems.

Conflitos Culturais E Religiosos Nas Obras De Vianna Moog, Marie F. Sovereign

A Comparative Study Of Individualized And Basal Reading Methods In Fourth Grade., Margaret A. Peke
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
I. THE PROBLEM
Statement of the problem. There is no controversy over the importance of reading instruction in the modern school curriculum. The ability to read is essential for learning in every field of knowledge. The purpose of this study was to investigate how individual differences could be more effectively provided for in the middle grades by (1) determining an indication of pupil interest, mental maturity, and reading achievement among three fourth grade classrooms, (2) establishing a method of procedure by which individualized instruction could be executed without utilization of the traditional basal reading approach, and (3) making an analytical …
Geology Of The Cerro Pelon-Arroyo De La Jara Area, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, Alvis Lee Lisenbee
Geology Of The Cerro Pelon-Arroyo De La Jara Area, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, Alvis Lee Lisenbee
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The Cerro Pelon-Arroyo de la Jara area is a north-northwesterly plunging syncline at the southern end of the Española basin. Exposed rock units consist of more than 5,000 feet of Mesozoic and Cenozoic shale and sandstone intruded by Oligocene diorite sills and andesite and latite dikes related to the Ortiz intrusive center to the west.
The syncline is affected by several fault systems with both normal and strike-slip movement represented. Northerly trending faults of the east limb combine with a monoclinal flexure to produce an over-all lowering of the section to the west. These faults appear to be related to …
Seven Years Of Change In Form And Color In The Sculpture Of John Chamberlain: 1958-1965, Mary Kelly Morgan
Seven Years Of Change In Form And Color In The Sculpture Of John Chamberlain: 1958-1965, Mary Kelly Morgan
Art & Art History ETDs
In the seven years between 1958 and 1965, John Chamberlain continually developed and changed his sculptural styles. Phases of this stylistic development require critical appraisal. Chamberlain's constant changing must be understood as the thread which connects each of his works to the whole of his effort. Chamberlain is controversial in that his work welcomes it, not controversial in that a debate, though invited, has not come.
Chamberlains evolution in form and color is not necessarily representative of the developments of his contemporaries. He is an individual, not a show-piece for the whole. By considering Chamberlain, critical research pays the present …

The North Atlantic Blockading Squadron Under Admiral David D. Porter, 1864-1865, Richard C. Hindley
History ETDs
When the Civil War broke out in April, 1861, it pitted against one another two nations, or sides, which were different not only politically and ideologically, but also economically. The United States was a rising industrial power, with factories, a railroad network, and an expanding urban working class. The Confederate States of America was an agricultural, rural area, with few industries and an antiquated labor system based on chattel slavery. In order to wage a modern war the Confederacy would have to import arms and equipment from abroad and export cotton to pay for these supplies. To keep the South …

Computer Models Of Genetic Drift In Small Populations With Three Different Structures, Beverly Jane Berger
Computer Models Of Genetic Drift In Small Populations With Three Different Structures, Beverly Jane Berger
Biology ETDs
The effect of population structure on genetic drift was studied using three computer models to simulate the populations of interest. For each model the effective breeding population size was 100, and the initial gene frequency for a locus with two alleles (A, a) was 0.5. These populations were considered to be made up of sexually reproducing diploid organisms. The population size was held constant from generation to generation, and generations were nonoverlapping. It was assumed that selection and mutation were absent. In the panmictic model, mating was at random within the population. In the other two models the populations were …
Aspects Of The Life History And Distribution Of The Jemez Mountains Salamander, Plethodon Neomexicanus, Douglas P. Reagan
Aspects Of The Life History And Distribution Of The Jemez Mountains Salamander, Plethodon Neomexicanus, Douglas P. Reagan
Biology ETDs
Plethodon neomexicanus, the Jemez Mountains Salamander, is endemic to the Jemez Mountains where it is restricted to talus slopes that are forested and shaded and that have suitable conditions of moisture and temperature. During the summer of 1966 four new localities were found, yielding information on the combination of factors which favor the presence of this salamander. Its habitat is at elevations of 7900-9200 ft within the upper montane forest of the Rocky Mountains. In the Jemez Mountains this forest exists at these elevations only on shaded north-facing slopes or in deep, shaded canyons. The presence of volcanic talus provides …
A Philosophical And Critical Analysis Of My Work In Painting And Drawing, James Robert Bolton
A Philosophical And Critical Analysis Of My Work In Painting And Drawing, James Robert Bolton
Art & Art History ETDs
The primary concern in my work is woman as an idealized goddess whose perfect beauty engenders the attributes of timelessness, sterility, and death. My ideas, although first encountered in literature, found visual realization in the images of the Vogue woman and the Renaissance Madonna. Both of these goddess figures are paradoxical in that they are real persons idealized and placed in a queenly context, and they consequently form a tension between illusion and reality. The historic setting for the Renaissance Madonna has three direct parallels to my work: 1) shallow space which characterizes an illusory stage-like setting, 2) symmetry which …
John Marin: The New Mexico Period, Walter Ellsworth Stevens
John Marin: The New Mexico Period, Walter Ellsworth Stevens
Art & Art History ETDs
A substantial number of books and articles has been devoted to the work of John Marin. Each of these, expressing something of the man’s poetic involvement with his work, has dealt with one or more aspects of the artist’s development. Although many have mentioned the fact that Marin spent two summers in and around Taos, New Mexico, no special study has been made of this important period in the artist’s life. A study of this nature is the purpose of this thesis.

Man, The World, And Art, Richard Arthur Guidotti
Man, The World, And Art, Richard Arthur Guidotti
Philosophy ETDs
Accusations of failure to face social responsibility may be leveled against two groups of intellectuals. One group is the philosophers; the other the artists. Both are creators. To both is entrusted to a large extent the formation of society and the construction of media through which all men are enabled to express their hopes and desires.
Aspects Of Fit In A Formal Organization:Differential Attitudes Of Air Force Rotc Cadets., Helen Rose Potter
Aspects Of Fit In A Formal Organization:Differential Attitudes Of Air Force Rotc Cadets., Helen Rose Potter
Sociology ETDs
The Problem
In a formal organization, what determines who stays in and who drops out? The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that the closer the “fit”, the less likelihood that members will drop out. The concept of “fit” and “non-fit” is not a conception of a simple dichotomy but of degrees and kinds of “fit” and “non-fit.” With this in mind, then, the research in this study is focused on an exploration of sub-cultural variations ; that is, sub-cultures that are more less congruent with a given set of role expectations.

Foundations as humanistic institutions have existed for centuries. The foundation as an American institution has come of age in the last fifty years. Many types exist in this country and their purposes for existence are quite varied. In recent years the foundation has increasingly been used as a legal entity for conducting medical education or research. Several of these foundations have joined together in an association to discuss solutions for their common research and business problems. This association is known as the Association of Independent Research Institutes.

Studies Of Sodium-22 Distribution During Hypothermia In Rattus Rattus, David N. Danforth Jr.
Biology ETDs
The response of regional circulation to reduced body temperature was studied in the white laboratory rat Rattus rattus, using injected 22Na as a tracer. Observations made on equilibration of plasma and tissue radiosodium, in normo- and hypothermic animals, provided evidence as to possible mechanisms responsible for transport of sodium at this interface. Evidence is also presented as to disposition of sodium in tissues during the first biological half-life.
Circulation to the peritoneal cavity is reduced to 50%, and to skin and bone approximately 10% and 25% of normothermic values respectively at body temperatures of 16-18 C. The appearance of …

Master Plan And Prototype Research Facility For The University Of New Mexico Research Park, Sam H. Robinson Jr.
Architecture and Planning ETDs
Since great emphasis is now being placed on developing our nation's scientific and technical capabilities, many universities are establishing closer liaison with private industry by inviting companies to locate on or near their campuses. This is not solely an effort by universities, for industry, too, finds it to its advantage to locate in proximity to educational institution. Their are a number of reasons why university-industry relationships are growing, but of most importance is the fact that both hav e recognized the benefits to be gained through an exchange of knowledge, personnel, and equipment
A Basic Educational Television Station, Norman D. Noonan
A Basic Educational Television Station, Norman D. Noonan
Architecture and Planning ETDs
The neglect of television in general by the architectural profession is shocking, yet understandable. It has only learned recently that TV and especially E.T.V. has come into its own and that the architectural profession has opened its doors to include TV stations. Thus, for my thesis, I have decided to design a "basic" TV station, which theoretically could be used by universities, school systems, and communities throughout the western United States.
