Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Pugio Predation On Sediment- And Stem-Dwelling Meiofauna: Field And Laboratory Experiments, Christopher S. Gregg, John W. Fleeger
Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Pugio Predation On Sediment- And Stem-Dwelling Meiofauna: Field And Laboratory Experiments, Christopher S. Gregg, John W. Fleeger
Faculty Publications
Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to clarify the predatory role of Palaemonetes pugio Holthius in salt-marsh benthic communities. Field experiments (cage enclosures using P. pugio as a predator) were conducted on unvegetated mudflat and vegetated-marsh sites. Neither sediment- or stem-dwelling meiofaunal abundances were significantly impacted. Laboratory experiments measured the functional response of P. pugio feeding on suspended harpacticoid copepods, tested the efficiency of P. pugio feeding on harpacticoids in sediments, and measured the predation rate of P. pugio on stem-dwelling meiofauna. Grass shrimp feeding rate on suspended copepods followed a type II functional response, increasing with increasing prey density …

Hst Observations Of Gro J1655 - 40 In Outburst, Robert I. Hynes
Faculty Publications
We examine the results of a coordinated HST-RXTE-CGRO campaign to study the microquasar GRO J1655-40 during its 1996-7 outburst, focusing on interpretation of the overall anti-correlation seen between optical and X-ray fluxes during the early months of the outburst. Our tools include echo-mapping, optical/UV continuum spectral modelling and analysis of spectral variability. We conclude by suggesting one possible interpretation for the anti-correlation.

An Estimation Of Rough Rice Basis In Southwest Louisiana (Bulletin #865), G. Grant Giesler, Wayne M. Gauthier, Michael E. Salassi
LSU AgCenter Bulletins
This report presents basis estimates for long grain rough rice in Southwest Louisiana for each of six marketing years from 1991-92 through 1996-97. The primary goal of this study is to enhance the understanding of basis movements in Southwest Louisiana, thereby increasing the likelihood that sound marketing decisions will be made by market participants.
The Upper Interval Topology, Property M, And Compactness, Jimmie Lawson
The Upper Interval Topology, Property M, And Compactness, Jimmie Lawson
Faculty Publications
The use of intrinsic topology such as interval topology and order topology that were typically symmetric was discussed. The theory of continuous lattices provided strong motivation for the consideration of such topologies such as the Scott topology or the hull-kernel topology which were not symmetric. Another approach to the study of topology on ordered structures was to begin with a set X equipped both with a partial order ≤ and a topology. The results show that these orders were called as closed order and the resulting ordered topological space was called as pospace, when the assumption was satisfied.

A 4,000 Year Pollen Record Of Vegetation Changes, Sea Level Rise, And Hurricane Disturbance In Atchafalaya March Of Southern Louisiana, Xinyu Zhou
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Sediment cores from the Atchafalaya Marsh in southern Louisiana were intensively studied by means of pollen and loss-on-ignition analyses to reconstruct the history of late-Holocene environmental changes and hurricane strikes in the area. The data indicate that the coring site was occupied by a fresh marsh about 4000 years ago. Afterwards, the fresh marsh was replaced by a brackish marsh in the following 400 years. The marsh became a salt marsh in response to sea level rise beginning 3250 yr BP. During 2800-1200 yr BP, the study site became an estuarine environment inundated by sea water as a result of …
Vassiliev Invariants: A New Framework For Quantum Gravity, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin
Vassiliev Invariants: A New Framework For Quantum Gravity, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
We show that Vassiliev invariants of knots, appropriately generalized to the spin network context, are loop differentiable in spite of being diffeomorphism invariant. This opens the possibility of defining rigorously the constraints of quantum gravity as geometrical operators acting on the space of Vassiliev invariants of spin nets. We show how to explicitly realize the diffeomorphism constraint on this space and present proposals for the construction of Hamiltonian constraints. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Analytical Solution Of The Generalized Discrete Poisson Equation, G. Y. Hu, Jai Yon Ryu, R. F. O'Connell
Faculty Publications
We present an analytical solution to the generalized discrete Poisson equation, a matrix equation which has a tridiagonal matrix with fringes having an arbitrary value for the diagonal elements. The results are of relevance to a variety of physical problems, which require the numerical solution of the Poisson equation. As examples, the formula has been applied to the solution of the electrostatic problem of tunnelling junction arrays with two and three rows.

Activation Of Signal Transducers And Activators Of Transcription 1 And 3 By Leukemia Inhibitory Factor, Oncostatin-M, And Interferon-Γ In Adipocytes, Jacqueline M. Stephens, Steven J. Lumpkin, Jordan B. Fishman

We have recently demonstrated that signal transducers and activators of transcription (STATs) 1, 3, 5A, 5B, and 6 are expressed in both cultured and native adipocytes. Our current studies have focused on the activation of STATs 1 and 3 by leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), oncostatin-M (OSM), and interferon-γ, (IFNγ) in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. IFNγ is shown to be a potent activator of STAT 1 as indicated by both tyrosine phosphorylation and nuclear translocation. However, LIF and OSM, which are potent inducers of STAT 3, are less potent activators of STAT 1 as measured by both tyrosine phosphorylation and nuclear translocation. Both …

Isolation Of A Highly Active Photosystem Ii Preparation From Synechocystis 6803 Using A Histidine-Tagged Mutant Of Cp 47, Terry M. Bricker, Jason Morvant, Najy Masri, Holly M. Sutton, Laurie K. Frankel

Site-directed mutagenesis was used to produce a Synechocystis mutant containing a histidine tag at the C terminus of the CP 47 protein of Photosystem II. This mutant cell line, designated HT-3, exhibited slightly above normal rates of oxygen evolution and appeared to accumulate somewhat more Photosystem II reaction centers than a control strain. A rapidly isolatable (<7 >h) oxygen-evolving Photosystem II preparation was prepared from HT-3 using dodecyl-β-d-maltoside solubilization and Co2+ metal affinity chromatography. This histidine-tagged Photosystem II preparation stably evolved oxygen at a high rate (2440 μmol O2 (mg chl)-1 h-1), exhibited an α-band absorption maximum at 674 nm, …7>

Exact Relations For Effective Tensors Of Polycrystals. Ii. Applications To Elasticity And Piezoelectricity, Yury Grabovsky, Daniel S. Sage

An important necessary condition for an exact relation for effective moduli of polycrystals to hold is stability of that relation under lamination. This requirement is so restrictive that it is possible (if not always feasible) to find all such relations explicitly. In order to do this one needs to combine the results developed in Part I of this paper and the representation theory of the rotation groups SO(2) and SO(3). More precisely, one needs to know all rotationally invariant subspaces of the space of material moduli. This paper presents an algorithm for finding all such subspaces. We illustrate the workings …

Infection with HIV-1 results in pronounced immune suppression and susceptibility to opportunistic infections (OI). Reciprocally, OI augment HIV-1 replication. As we have shown for Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) and Pneumocystis carinii, macrophages infected with opportunistic pathogens and within lymphoid tissues containing OI, exhibit striking levels of vital replication. To explore potential underlying mechanisms for increased HIV-1 replication associated with coinfection, blood monocytes were exposed to MAC antigens (MAg) or viable MAC and their levels of tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) and HIV-1 coreceptors monitored. MAC enhanced TNFα production in vitro, consistent with its expression in coinfected lymph nodes. Using a …

We report on the results of a multiwavelength campaign to observe the soft X-ray transient (SXT) and superluminal jet source GRO J1655-40 in outburst using HST, RXTE and CGRO together with ground-based facilities. This outburst was qualitatively quite different from other SXT outbursts and from previous outbursts of this source. The onset of hard X-ray activity occurred very slowly, over several months, and was delayed relative to the soft X-ray rise. During this period, the optical fluxes declined steadily. This apparent anticorrelation is not consistent with the standard disc instability model of SXT outbursts, nor is it expected if the …
The Induced Representations Of Brauer Algebras And The Clebsch-Gordan Coefficients Of So(N), Feng Pan, Shihai Dong, J. P. Draayer
The Induced Representations Of Brauer Algebras And The Clebsch-Gordan Coefficients Of So(N), Feng Pan, Shihai Dong, J. P. Draayer
Faculty Publications
Induced representations of Df(n) from Sf1 × Sf2 with f1 + f2 = f are discussed. The induction coefficients (IDCs) or the outer-product reduction coefficients of Sf1 × Sf2 ↑ Df (n ) with f ≤ 4 up to a normalization factor are derived by using the linear equation method. Weyl tableaux for the corresponding Gel'fand basis of SO(n) are defined. The assimilation method for obtaining Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of SO(n) in the Gel'fand basis for no modification rule involved couplings from IDCs of Brauer algebras is proposed. Some isoscalar factors of SO(n) ⊃ SO(n - 1) for the resulting irrep …

We suggest that in a recently proposed framework for quantum gravity, where Vassiliev invariants span the the space of states, the latter is dramatically reduced if one has a non-vanishing cosmological constant. This naturally suggests that the initial state of the universe should have been one with Λ = 0. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The 3'-ends of the genomes (9538 bp) of two wild-type respiratory bovine coronavirus (RBCV) isolates LSU and OK were obtained by cDNA sequencing. In addition, the 3'-end of the genome (9545) of the wild-type enteric bovine coronavirus (EBCV) strain LY-138 was assembled from available sequences and by cDNA sequencing of unknown genomic regions. Comparative analyses of RBCV and EBCV nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences revealed that RBCV-specific nucleotide and amino acid differences were disproportionally concentrated within the S gene and the genomic region between the S and E genes. Comparisons among virulent and avirulent BCV strains revealed that virulence-specific …

We demonstrate correlated rapid variability between the optical/UV and X-ray emission for the first time in a soft X-ray transient, GRO J1655-40: Hubble Space Telescope (HST) light curves show similar features to those seen by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), but with mean delay of up to 10-20 s. We interpret the correlations as the result of reprocessing of X-rays into optical and UV emission, with a delay owing to finite light travel time, and thus perform echo mapping of the system. The time-delay distribution has a mean of 14.6 ± 1.4 s and dispersion (i.e. the standard deviation …

The chromosomal translocation t(11;14)(q13;q32) fuses the IGH and CCND1 genes and leads to cyclin D1 overexpression. This genetic abnormality is the hallmark of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), but is also found in some cases of atypical chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), characterized by a poor outcome. For an unequivocal assessment of this specific chromosomal rearrangement on interphase cells, we developed a set of probes for fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Northern blotting was performed for analysis of the cyclin D1 expression in 18 patients. Thirty-eight patients, with either a typical MCL leukemic phase (17 patients) or atypical CLL with an MCL-type …
