Ankle Kinetics During Landing Tasks In Participants With Chronic Ankle Instability And Uninjured Controls, Alison Lorinda Bauer Aug 2006

Ankle Kinetics During Landing Tasks In Participants With Chronic Ankle Instability And Uninjured Controls, Alison Lorinda Bauer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lateral ankle sprains are a common injury sustained by physically active individuals. Many of these individuals will incur repetitive episodes of lateral ankle sprain, resulting in chronic ankle instability (CAI). CAI has been heavily researched, but few conclusions have been drawn. Much of this research has focused on sagittal plane kinematics and kinetics. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare three-dimensional ankle joint kinetics during functional landing tasks in participants with CAI and uninjured controls. Participants performed single-leg vertical drop landings and single-leg cross-over landings. There were no significant differences between the two groups for ankle net joint …

Using existing data from the 1999 Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study, this thesis analyzes the social predictors of unwanted sexual advances experienced by college women and where this type of victimization occurs. Hypotheses were derived from routine activities theory and feminist theory. Findings show that attendance at bars has a more significant effect on experiences of unwanted sexual advances than attendance at parties, attendance at drink promotions, and participation in drinking games. Increased alcohol consumption at bars has a signifcant effect on unwanted sexual advances. The analysis also reveals that alcohol abstention at parties has a significant …

Sexually Dimorphic Developmental Patterns Of Chemosensory Behaviors In African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Dhaval Kartik Vyas Jul 2006

Sexually Dimorphic Developmental Patterns Of Chemosensory Behaviors In African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Dhaval Kartik Vyas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Like many polygynous mammals, African elephants exhibit social dimorphism in which females reside in matriarchal groups while males often travel alone or in bachelor groups. Males search for receptive mates who may advertise their condition through chemical and other signals. The difference in adult lifestyles suggests that the developmental pattern of communication for the two sexes should diverge when the social environment and reproductive opportunities of males and females begin to differ. In this study, I examined the differences between the sexes and across four age classes (calves, juveniles, subadults and adults) in the performance of chemosensory behaviors. African elephants …

Playground For The Imagination, B. Darlene Miller May 2006

Playground For The Imagination, B. Darlene Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the past years, my work has been based on a desire to depict the spiritual and physiological interdependence humans have with the wetland ecosystem. As I examine the shapes of trees and their roots through rubbings, paintings, and sculpture, I sought to express this interaction between humans and nature. My artwork metamorphosed from the traditionally separated forms of painting and sculpture into an environment. The transformation of natural materials into manufactured products led me to cultivate a deeper understanding of ecology, where humans are participants in the natural process of the life cycle. Nature becomes the primary subject and …

Population Genetic Structure Of The Temperate Scleractinian Coral, Oculina Arbuscula, In Coastal Georgia, Lauren Michelle Wagner May 2006

Population Genetic Structure Of The Temperate Scleractinian Coral, Oculina Arbuscula, In Coastal Georgia, Lauren Michelle Wagner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dispersal of marine organisms has generally been assumed to be demographically open with planktonic larvae exploiting ocean currents to travel long distances. However, recent studies report evidence of local larval recruitment. In this study, I hypothesized that populations of the temperate coral, Oculina arbuscula, are maintained primarily by local recruitment off the Georgia coast because: 1) suitable substrate for settlement is patchy and 2) O. arbuscula's branching morphology is conducive to asexual reproduction by fragmentation. To address this hypothesis, I combined data from allozyme electrophoresis, histocompatibility assays, and despersion of established colonies. Results indicated substantial local recruitment maintained primarily by …

Local Adaptation For Life-History Traits In Silene Latifolia, Brandy May Penna May 2006

Local Adaptation For Life-History Traits In Silene Latifolia, Brandy May Penna

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A fundamental question in evolutionary ecology is how species adjust post colonization. The plant Silene latifolia was introduced to North America (NA) from Europe (EU) in the 1800s. The goal of this thesis was to test if Silene latifolia has become locally adapted across its range. My first experiment tested local adaptation of germination success to three temperatures across three latitudinal regions in a growth chamber using seeds from nine EU and NA populations. Germination success or speed was similar among latitudinal regions across continents. My second experiment examined local adaptation at a continental scale; I grew plants from 15 …

Predicting Starting Status: Factors Contributing To The Success Of Collegiate Football Players, Martin John Spieler May 2006

Predicting Starting Status: Factors Contributing To The Success Of Collegiate Football Players, Martin John Spieler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The recruiting process in collegiate football calls for coaches to identify prospective student-athletes who would be most successful at their institution. Humara (2005) argues that while coaches are experts in the identification of physical attributes needed for success, they may lack the ability to identify psychological skills. Niednagel (2004) would contend that in addition to psychological and physical factors, environmental factors also contribute to the ability to succeed. Participants were 108 male football players (35 linemen, 47 tight ends/linebackers, 18 skilled players, 8 special teams) from 6 teams in a NCAA Division I Southeastern conference. Using multivariate analysis of variance …

Forbidden Fruit: Dryden's The State Of Innocence And Fall Of Man, An Operatic Version Of Paradise Lost, Devane King Middleton May 2006

Forbidden Fruit: Dryden's The State Of Innocence And Fall Of Man, An Operatic Version Of Paradise Lost, Devane King Middleton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ever since Dryden published his opera The state of innocence, critics have speculated about his reasons for making a stage adaptation of Milton's Paradise lost. The fact that Dryden worked for Milton in Cromwell's government may have been a factor. Dryden's Puritan indoctrination during childhood, followed by influences from a royalist schoolmaster in his teenage years, makes the answer to the question somewhat more complex, as does the fact that the play, its source a Puritan epic adapted by an Anglican royalist poet, is dedicated to the Catholic bride of James, Duke of York and brother to Charles II. Throughout …

Right Reverend Stephen Elliott: Political Influence And The Protestant Episcopal Church In Georgia, 1840-1866, Paulette S. Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

By the late 1840's, the South's religious and political convictions upheld slaveholders' social and economic views. These convictions permeated worship services in Georgia via the ministries. At the onset of the Civil War, spirituality provided an essential source of Southern strength in both victory and defeat. As fortitude subsided, religion also played a prodigious role in perpetuating the Confederate experience. For a generation, its theology had endorsed the South's social arrangement, asserted the morality of slavery, expunged Southern sins, and recruited the populace as God's devout guardians of the institution. Sustained by the belief that they were God's chosen people, …

Age Effects On Social And Investigative Behaviors In A Closed Population Of African Elephants, Christen Eileen Merte

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study of African elephants (Loxodonta africana), I examined two competing hypotheses to explain the development of social and reproductive behaviors. The reproductive hypothesis states that behaviors change around the time when an individual begins successfully reproducing, while the social dominance hypothesis states that behaviors change throughout the life of an individual, reflective of changes in social rank. These hypotheses were explored in male and female elephants during the entry to a signal-rich waterhole and in female African elephants across seasons. Chemosensory and social behaviors were recorded in Addo Elephant National Park between May 2004 and June 2005 using …
