Online Deception: The Impact Of Language In Text-Based Deception Detection, Stephanie Dayle Avila

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

In today’s digital age, spreading false information online can have serious consequences, from affecting elections to undermining public health efforts. Despite the issue's importance, there’s been relatively little research into better understanding how people make decisions about lies and misinformation online. My project dives into this challenge by exploring how specific language cues, like grammar errors or unusual word choices, influence people’s perception of statements in terms of deceit online. I examined how people react to these cues through three separate but related studies when reading truthful and deceptive statements. The first two studies showed that true statements with grammatical …

Psychology: Music Genre And Film Perception, Emily Cloud, Patrick Santorum, Raygan Robertson, Hannah Johnson Apr 2024

Psychology: Music Genre And Film Perception, Emily Cloud, Patrick Santorum, Raygan Robertson, Hannah Johnson

Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Existing research indicates that music can alter the visual perception of emotion, such as negative moods followed sad music and positive moods followed happy music (Jolij & Meurs, 2011). Furthermore, different genres of music over film have an impact on the perception of the viewer, specifically attention level (Y. Kwon et al., 2022) and likeability or connection of film characters (Hoeckner, B et al., 2011). While evidence has shown that there are physiological effects of different genres of music (i.e. rock, jazz, classical) (K. Whiteford et al. 2018) (Grewe, O. et al, 2007), there is a gap in the literature …

Collective Memory And Creative Subjectivity: A Living Conversation, Alexandra Katherine Goodall, Alba Torres Robinat

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This article is the record of a dialogue between two artists and Expressive Arts therapists, Alba Torres Robinat and Alexandra Katherine Goodall. They chose to undertake this conversation in the form of letters that were written back-and-forth over a period of time in a shared document, which places their correspondence in the tradition of epistolary writing. This decision to write the article as letters lends the conversation an immediacy, a warmth, a sense of time, distance and familiarity, and a feeling of intimacy.

The authors invite readers to witness the deepening of a relationship and the development of their conversational …

Ripe Spoils, Yan Cynthia Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Chen’s practice primarily focus on sculptures and installation. She explores the interplay between the idea of nature and the constructed environment, by examining how language informs what we know. The central thesis, "Ripe Spoils", employs citrus fruits as symbols for bodily experiences and personal identity, investigating their cultural and historical significance. Her sculptures summon the qualities and embedded meanings in materials like paper pulp and clay, wax and citrus fruits, often resulting in abstracted forms evocative of the human body. This thesis paper and exhibition reflect on themes like mortality and the essence of self.

Target Selection And Enhancement During Attentional Tracking, Marvin R. Maechler

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

At any waking moment, we are bombarded with more sensory information than we can fully process. Attention is necessary to deal with the dynamic world we live in. One fundamental function of vision and attention is to keep track of moving objects, but what are the targets of attention during tracking?

One of the first theories of attentional tracking predicted that targets would be selected at early processing stages. By employing the double-drift illusion, which dissociates physical and perceived positions of moving objects, we investigated which of these positions is selected for tracking. Contrary to earlier theories and in line …

Indonesia, rich in natural resources, is also a significant energy contributor to the global economy. However, despite having large fossil fuel reserves, Indonesia has topped the ranking of oil importers for the last 20 years. Indonesia is facing the Energy Trilemma. The first point is energy security. A condition when a country has a stable and adequate energy supply at a reasonable price for the short and long term. Energy poverty is the second aspect of the Indonesian Energy Trilemma and this is still common in Indonesia, especially outside Java and Bali. Even though in 2020 the Indonesian government has …

An Examination Of The African American Male Perception Of Church Attendance, Edward D. Gaston Jr. Dec 2023

An Examination Of The African American Male Perception Of Church Attendance, Edward D. Gaston Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The variances among religious groups in the U.S. have been presumed to have weakened, yet class and ethnic variances have been largely overlooked by sociology (Wilde et. al., 2018, as cited in Pyle & Davidson, 2014). Though some research focuses explicitly on African American (AA) men, (Fitzgerald, 2010; Davis, 2020; Truss, 2018) the researcher discovered little evidence emphasizing AA men who are de-churched (Trends in the black church: More faithful, but not immune to decline, 2021; Dechurched: Witness & Outreach, 2021, para 1). The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study is to understand why AA males are increasingly becoming religiously …

One Man’S Trash, Jordan Tavan Dec 2023

One Man’S Trash, Jordan Tavan

Theses

This thesis explores perception through ambiguous mixed-media sculpture in order to create the potential for people to question their assumptions of what “is.” Judgments, categorization, and assumptions are big parts of the ways we make sense of our world. Often, we’re wrong about them. This artwork is created in response to the lifelong experience of existing outside the lines – the experience of breaking social rules and the desire for others to realize the potential for multiple truths.

Novel Psychophysics Of Cognitive Color Appearance Phenomena, Luke Hellwig

Theses

Color appearance models can be used as an experimental design and analysis tool to better study high-level color perception involving brightness and chromatic adaptation. We investigate the experimental basis for the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect, the contribution of chromatic intensity to our perception of brightness. A new experimental method for measuring the brightness of chromatic colors leads to a model of the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect, which we use to extend CIECAM16, the color appearance model recommended by the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage. The model is tested on high-dynamic-range images. The process of building this model also leads to several improvements in CIECAM16 itself. …

How Attachment Styles Affect Our Perception Of Daily Activities, Hannah Foley, Harry Lackey, Ella Marks, Wyatt Swaim, Maddie Rowe

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Existing research indicates that social functioning (i.e., emotional motives, social interaction, relationships, interpersonal goals) is associated with personal attachment style (Locke, 2008) and avoidance in emerging adults. Furthermore, attachment styles of individuals can predict daily activities and personal motives (Springstein et al., 2023). While evidence has pointed to interpersonal risk (i.e., physiological safety versus threat) and a sense of security, research has yet to explore these variables in the relationship between attachment styles and helping other individuals in social settings in university students. For our research, we wanted to expand on this past research and test the effects of daily …
