One Man’S Trash, Jordan Tavan Dec 2023

One Man’S Trash, Jordan Tavan

Theses

This thesis explores perception through ambiguous mixed-media sculpture in order to create the potential for people to question their assumptions of what “is.” Judgments, categorization, and assumptions are big parts of the ways we make sense of our world. Often, we’re wrong about them. This artwork is created in response to the lifelong experience of existing outside the lines – the experience of breaking social rules and the desire for others to realize the potential for multiple truths.

Novel Psychophysics Of Cognitive Color Appearance Phenomena, Luke Hellwig Dec 2023

Novel Psychophysics Of Cognitive Color Appearance Phenomena, Luke Hellwig

Theses

Color appearance models can be used as an experimental design and analysis tool to better study high-level color perception involving brightness and chromatic adaptation. We investigate the experimental basis for the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect, the contribution of chromatic intensity to our perception of brightness. A new experimental method for measuring the brightness of chromatic colors leads to a model of the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect, which we use to extend CIECAM16, the color appearance model recommended by the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage. The model is tested on high-dynamic-range images. The process of building this model also leads to several improvements in CIECAM16 itself. …

Can Providing Positive Interactions With Snakes Change A Person’S Perception Of Dangerous Wildlife Interactions?, Bethany Walker Oct 2021

Can Providing Positive Interactions With Snakes Change A Person’S Perception Of Dangerous Wildlife Interactions?, Bethany Walker

Theses

Due to a long co-evolutionary history between placental mammals and reptiles, primates demonstrate aversive responses to snakes. In humans, this can result in ophidiophobia, or the fear of snakes which can arise due to cultural backgrounds, traumatic experiences, or fear instilled by others. However, these reptiles fill essential roles in ecosystems. Conservation and outreach efforts are important to help our population understand snakes’ role in our lives and the state’s broader biodiversity. Negative experiences or preconceptions about snakes can make this message hard to share with the public. Educators can help prevent intentional harm to some of these organisms through …

An Application Of Deep-Learning To Understand Human Perception Of Art, Sanjana Kapisthalam Dec 2018

An Application Of Deep-Learning To Understand Human Perception Of Art, Sanjana Kapisthalam

Theses

Eye movement patterns are known to differ when looking at stimuli given a different task, but less is known about how these patterns change as a function of expertise. When a particular visual pattern is viewed, a particular sequence of eye movements are executed and this sequence is defined as scanpath. In this work we made an attempt to answer the question, “Do art novices and experts look at paintings differently?” If they do, we should be able to discriminate between the two groups using machine learning applied to their scanpaths. This can be done using algorithms for Multi-Fixation Pattern …

Perceptions Of Non-Americans Towards American Tv Series, Thaarika Charumathy Seetharaman Aug 2018

Perceptions Of Non-Americans Towards American Tv Series, Thaarika Charumathy Seetharaman

Theses

Television drama is one of the most entertaining genre of the media industry, and it serves as a socialization platform (Greenberg, 1982). American TV series have gained audience and fans from all around the world which opens up the scope for examining the effects of American media on the secondary audience. Drawing on the framework of cultivation theory, this study examined the effect of American TV series on non-American population. The results suggested that the cultivation effects are dependent on age and gender of the respondents, in connection with the genre of the series influencing the audience’s framing of the …

A Dataset Of Gaze Behavior In Vr Faithful To Natural Statistics, Brendan John Aug 2017

A Dataset Of Gaze Behavior In Vr Faithful To Natural Statistics, Brendan John

Theses

Eye tracking technology is advancing swiftly and many areas of research have begun taking advantage of this. Existing eye trackers project gaze onto a 2D plane, whether it be the display of a head mounted virtual reality (VR) helmet or an image of a real life scene the user is in. This allows us to easily analyze what a viewer is looking at, but limits classification of gaze behaviors from this type of signal. Instead, a system that takes into account head movements within the same space as gaze velocity allows researchers to classify more advanced gaze behaviors such as …

Thesis Inquiry & Process: Something About Reality, Blayke Mackenzie Morrow Dec 2016

Thesis Inquiry & Process: Something About Reality, Blayke Mackenzie Morrow

Theses

This thesis documents the employment of a system of Process and Inquiry as it serves as a structural foundation for an investigation of the manner in which Reality is represented in visual portraiture. Through a vigorous exploration of the concept of Reality and its singular nature, it is hypothesized that intrinsically unique experiences could potentially be communicated through the perceptive abilities of the emotional quotient. The effects of media, timing, complexity, abstraction, and authenticity are examined for their effect on the apparent clarity of concepts transmitted in this manner. The inquiry ultimately manifests in the daily creation of self-portraiture, as …

Residual Affect, Beth A. Gilbert May 2016

Residual Affect, Beth A. Gilbert

Theses

Using a personal experience of surviving a sexual assault as a starting point, Residual Affect is a multimedia series incorporating still photographs and video to visually portray the aftermath of psychological trauma on a daily basis; a trauma that has long-lasting psychological ramifications; turmoil that doesn’t end with the completion of the traumatic event itself. Hinting at the original traumatic event, the imagery depicts life from the moment after tumult, exploring themes of perception, disorientation and restriction to create a larger dialog about the enduring psychological effects of a perceived life-threatening event; effects that bleed through into everyday life.

Tense And Truthmaking: Addressing The Problem Of Tense After The Ontological Turn, Elliott Risch Jul 2015

Tense And Truthmaking: Addressing The Problem Of Tense After The Ontological Turn, Elliott Risch

Theses

The vogue position among many philosophers and physicists is that the perceptual appearance of tensed properties, e.g. was past, is present and will be future, involves a perceptual illusion at a certain level of complexity within our physical system. This position leads to the problem of tense, where the truth of judgments based upon tensed properties is called into question. After appraising several received solutions to the problem of tense, I argue that each is guilty of implicitly assuming a certain estimation of what counts as a truth-maker for tensed judgments. This estimation is reliant upon an entailment relation holding …

Boundary Conditions Of Font Size Effects, Kyeong M. Park Jan 2015

Boundary Conditions Of Font Size Effects, Kyeong M. Park

Theses

Prior research has shown that people perceive items in a larger font size as being more memorable than items in a smaller font size. This perception leads to higher judgments of learning (JOLs; i.e., confidence ratings regarding the likelihood of recalling an item) for larger font size items than smaller font size items. Yet other research has shown that people recalled more when the information was presented in a smaller font than when it was presented in a larger font size. The present study examined if there are boundary conditions of font sizes affecting JOLs and actual recall performance. As …

Perceptions And Realities: Contemporary Impressions Of Formative And Temporal Experiences, Holly Lee Brewer Nov 2014

Perceptions And Realities: Contemporary Impressions Of Formative And Temporal Experiences, Holly Lee Brewer

Theses

This thesis describes contemporary, non-traditional printmaking processes aimed at creating a metaphor for our perceptions of time and how the passage of time affects us both internally and externally in our attempt at constructing our self-identity. The language of this metaphor adopts the internal patterns of tree burls and altered pieces of manufactured wood in communicating the transience of time and mutability of memory. Texture is highlighted in many of the pieces for the exhibition, not only with that of irregular wood grain, but also in the series with skin-like handmade flax paper. In order to demonstrate how memory is …

The Perceived Value Of Videogame Packaging Among Young Adults, Colby Kibbe May 2012

The Perceived Value Of Videogame Packaging Among Young Adults, Colby Kibbe

Theses

Numerous forms of media content that once utilized physical distribution, such as music, movies, and publications, are now being distributed digitally. Videogames are the latest media content to be distributed in this manner, thus removing suppliers--such as packaging printers--who played a role in traditional physical distribution. With the U.S. printing industry projected to decline by 15% by 2015 (Romano & Broudy, 2010), the loss of packaged videogames as a source of revenue for packaging printers may further threaten the viability of the industry. The purpose of this research was to determine the current perceived value of packaged vs. digitally distributed …

The Influence Of Auditory Cues On Visual Spatial Perception, Joseph W. Geeseman Dec 2010

The Influence Of Auditory Cues On Visual Spatial Perception, Joseph W. Geeseman

Theses

Traditional psychophysical studies have been primarily unimodal experiments due to the ease in which a single sense can be isolated in a laboratory setting. This study, however, presents participants with auditory and visual stimuli to better understand the interaction of the two senses in visuospatial perception. Visual stimuli, presented as Gaussian distributed blobs, moved laterally across a computer monitor to a central location and "bounced" back to their starting position. During this passage across the screen, a brief auditory "click" was presented via headphones. Participants were asked to respond to the bounce of the ball, and response latency was recorded. …

In Defense Of Two Intentionalism-Defeating Inverted Spectrum Thought Experiments, Pendaran Roberts Mar 2010

In Defense Of Two Intentionalism-Defeating Inverted Spectrum Thought Experiments, Pendaran Roberts

Theses

Inverted spectrum thought experiments have often been used to argue against Intentionalism. Eric Marcus, in his article entitled “Intentionalism and the Imaginability of the Inverted Spectrum,” defends two versions of Intentionalism, which he calls Intentionalism and Converse Intentionalism, from four inverted-spectrum based arguments. Marcus labels the four arguments from which he defends Intentionalism the implausible error, symmetry, no-inference, and best theory of representation arguments. In this article, I will bolster the arguments from no-inference and symmetry in order that they avoid Marcus’ defenses. Specifically, I will first show that the argument from no-inference may be modified to comply with Marcus’ …

Time Delays And System Response Times In Human-Computer Interaction, Noah Stupak Sep 2009

Time Delays And System Response Times In Human-Computer Interaction, Noah Stupak

Theses

This study sought to determine a type of graphical representation of system response time that would be most beneficial to the user in terms of task performance. Specifically, I examined which type of progress bar would allow the user to return to working with the system most efficiently while performing other concurrent tasks, and how well the user performed these tasks. The different types of progress bars studied included segmented and continuous progress presentations, and linear, accelerating, and decelerating progress behaviors. The results indicate that different representations of system response time affected performance on the two tasks, with the continuous …

Direct Occlusion Handling For High Level Image Processing Algorithms, Carl Ryan Kelso Feb 2009

Direct Occlusion Handling For High Level Image Processing Algorithms, Carl Ryan Kelso

Theses

Many high-level computer vision algorithms suffer in the presence of occlusions caused by multiple objects overlapping in a view. Occlusions remove the direct correspondence between visible areas of objects and the objects themselves by introducing ambiguity in the interpretation of the shape of the occluded object. Ignoring this ambiguity allows the perceived geometry of overlapping objects to be deformed or even fractured. Supplementing the raw image data with a vectorized structural representation which predicts object completions could stabilize high-level algorithms which currently disregard occlusions. Studies in the neuroscience community indicate that the feature points located at the intersection of junctions …

Chiasm, Christine Heusner Sep 2008

Chiasm, Christine Heusner

Theses

This thesis explores the convergence and divergence between the mind and multimedia environment as perceptions are formed. The digitally constructed representation of the space investigated in the thesis work illustrates an abstract impression of the modern environment, somewhere between the real and the imaginary, the actual and the representational. The installation of the thesis images, off the gallery walls and at varying levels throughout the space, encourages the viewers to question realities and perception. I discuss the creation of the thesis work through a variety of different processes and media, both digital and traditional, and how this mimics environmental reality. …

Untitled, Matt Gehring Apr 2008

Untitled, Matt Gehring

Theses

This thesis examines the understanding and visual perception of photographs. My work investigates the role that difference plays in one’s ability to perceive depth between planes. Through the visual representation of various temporal phenomena, it is possible to begin a discourse about difference, in relation to perception. This thesis document and the accompanying exhibition address themes of illusion, abstraction, repetition, and the infinite. All of which can be affected by subtle variance in color, light, and orientation. These slight variations affect how a viewer perceives the other photographs in the exhibition. The ambiguity of perspective in the images relies heavily …

The Impact Of Variable Data Print On Usability In Design, William Wells Jun 2007

The Impact Of Variable Data Print On Usability In Design, William Wells

Theses

In a world where people see, process and remember information differently, the question arises: Is technology being used in a manner that acknowledges and addresses user differences to the fullest extent? Currently, new print technologies like Variable Data Printing (VDP) are only being used to create customized direct mailing pieces and personalized products for the purpose of marketing, sales and promotion. However, VDP introduces the ability to change data and design elements in printed documents on an individual basis, making it possible to address differences in visual and cognitive abilities, language and culture, and situational considerations. Applying this concept of …

A Detailed Measure Of Apparent Modulation Induced By Cornsweet Edges On A Digital Image Display System, Jeff Pelz Nov 1986

A Detailed Measure Of Apparent Modulation Induced By Cornsweet Edges On A Digital Image Display System, Jeff Pelz

Theses

A digital image display based system was designed and implemented to perform visual measurements of apparent modulation induced by the Cornsweet illusion. The system was used to examine the results reported on previous experiments designed to measure the modulation transfer function of the human visual system. The reported results of experiments performed by Dooley and Greenfield on induced modulation were examined, and data not reported in that work was collected on the range of modulations over which observers perceived linear images. The system developed has the flexibility to be adapted for many different types of experiments. Visual experiments involving human …

Elements Of Visual Perception, Dudley Killam Aug 1978

Elements Of Visual Perception, Dudley Killam

Theses

The roles of scale, contrast and spectral difference in visual detection and recognition was investigated. Geometrical target arrays were produced and projected using a rear projection apparatus. Scale was varied using combined photographic reduction and slide projection. Contrast levels were adjusted in projection of lithographic target arrays using neutral density filtration arrangements in the projection apparatus. Experimentally obtained cumulative probability of detection and combined detection and recognition was examined relative to established combinations of target scale, contrast and spectral difference. A method for the characterization of target pair differences was offered and analyzed. The relation of scale, contrast and perceptual …
