Phenomenological Perception: A Memorial For Fishermen Lost At Sea, Joel Kline

Architecture Thesis Prep

"This thesis contends that through the exploration of tactile issues of arhitectural perception, architecture can be tested for its broader role as an effective mediator between us and the world, the individual in society, and life and death."

A Perception Of The Software Process Model, Albert H. S. Scott Aug 2000

A Perception Of The Software Process Model, Albert H. S. Scott

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

A student's perception of a software development process model appears to be a series of milestones when documentation is produced to satisfy academic requirements. Certain academic and industrial practices may influence students to place more emphasis on the software product than the process model. The proposal presented is to establish a more structured approach to project supervision to ensure a student performs quality planning, which includes the identification of appropriate software product quality attributes. Such an approach may ensure that sufficient attention is given to the software development process model to ensure that desired software product quality attributes are achieved.

Diagrams Based On Structured Object Perception, Pourang Irani, Colin Ware May 2000

Diagrams Based On Structured Object Perception, Pourang Irani, Colin Ware

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Most diagrams, particularly those used in software engineering, are line drawings consisting of nodes drawn as rectangles or circles, and edges drawn as lines linking them. In the present paper we review some of the literature on human perception to develop guidelines for effective diagram drawing. Particular attention is paid to structural object recognition theory. According to this theory as objects are perceived they are decomposed into 3D set of primitives called geons, together with the skeleton structure connecting them. We present a set of guidelines for drawing variations on node-link diagrams using geon-like primitives, and provide some examples. Results …

Cultural Factors Influencing Japanese Female College Students' Perceptions Of Learning In A Web-Based Environment: Implications For Web-Based Instructional Designers, Theresa L. Lally Edd Apr 2000

Cultural Factors Influencing Japanese Female College Students' Perceptions Of Learning In A Web-Based Environment: Implications For Web-Based Instructional Designers, Theresa L. Lally Edd

Dissertations

The burst of the Japanese bubble economy in 1992 brought about many reforms in Japanese education. One example of these reforms is the recent introduction of web-based instruction into Japanese classrooms. Since traditional Japanese education has been greatly influenced by elements of Confucianism, many educators are concerned about the integration of web-based instruction with traditional Japanese teaching methods. The purposes of this study were to investigate Japanese female junior college students' attitudes and/or perceptions of learning in a web-based environment, and to measure performance between students in a traditional teacher-centered course with another group of students learning via web-based instruction. …

Adolescent Perceptions Of Parent-Adolescent Communication And Adolescent Pregnancy, Susan L. Tohm Lloyd Phd, Ms, Rn Apr 2000

Adolescent Perceptions Of Parent-Adolescent Communication And Adolescent Pregnancy, Susan L. Tohm Lloyd Phd, Ms, Rn

Dissertations

Identification of adolescent perceptions of parent-adolescent communication, a significant factor in family functioning and connectedness, is important if effective interventions are to be provided by health care professionals related to decreasing the number as well as the adverse effects of adolescent pregnancy in the United States. The purpose of this descriptive, non-experimental, triangulated study was to examine the relationship between the perceived quality and effectiveness of parent-adolescent communication and pregnancy from the perspective of pregnant adolescent women in the Banning/Beaumont area of southern California. The theoretical framework for this study was based on adolescent and family developmental theories, family communication …

Agents’ Perceptions Of Structure: How Illinois Organic Farmers View Political, Economic, Social, And Ecological Factors, Leslie Duram Mar 2000

Agents’ Perceptions Of Structure: How Illinois Organic Farmers View Political, Economic, Social, And Ecological Factors, Leslie Duram

Publications

Various structural factors influence organic farmer decision-making. Analyses that combine structure and agency provide an opportunity for understanding farmers' perceptions of the political, economic, and social "world" in which they operate. Rich conversational interviews, conducted with twenty certified organic farmers in Illinois and analyzed with multiple qualitative methods, show how farmers mediate structural concerns. In addition to political, economic, and social structures, a fourth structure is needed. Indeed these organic farmers emphasize the importance of ecological factors in their decision-making. Within the perceived economic, political, social, and ecological structures, numerous topics (i.e., marketing, policy, family, ecosystems) and subtopics (i.e., diversification, …

A Cross-Case Study Of Teacher Perceptions Of Program Design And Teaching Efficacy: The Seaview Reading Support Program, Susan L. Bowers Smith Edd Jan 2000

A Cross-Case Study Of Teacher Perceptions Of Program Design And Teaching Efficacy: The Seaview Reading Support Program, Susan L. Bowers Smith Edd

Dissertations

Teachers at Seaview Elementary School developed an innovative reading support program delivered by classroom teachers to increase the achievement of children who struggled to read literature in the district's core curriculum. Although studies of the program's impact on student achievement indicated that many of the children who received services in the classroom were able to fluently read grade level materials and improve their scores on standardized tests, issues created by the additional burden of this instruction on some teachers prevented the integration of the program into other grade levels and schools in the Seaview School District and Seaview Elementary School. …
