Exploring The Relationship Between People And The Environment In The English Classroom, Annette Worm

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The power of literature may help bring the status of the environment into the minds of readers while providing the basis for people to find ways to heal themselves and their world. The English classroom can integrate critical thinking skills with nature literature to help the teenagers learn decision-making techniques and construct their own values and attitudes toward the environment

A Theoretical Model For Biased Superlattice Devices, Michael Ferner Dec 1992

A Theoretical Model For Biased Superlattice Devices, Michael Ferner

Theses

A model describing the subband structures and tunneling characteristics of superlattices is presented. The model solves the envelope function equations by the transfer matrix technique. The results are codified in a Fortran program, and the model is applied to several structures.

Superlattice have been studied extensively, however many new structures await investigation.

This model is presented as a preliminary design tool. The program allows a designer to do preliminary calculations. This type of investigation guides a designer toward a goal by making possible a large number of calculations on many different structures.

Bow Use In The Great Basin, Andrew Ugan Dec 1992

Bow Use In The Great Basin, Andrew Ugan

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The bow and arrow is a tool with a very long history. In the Old World its use dates back to paleolithic times, with firm evidence in the form of arrow shafts dated to the early ninth millennium b.c. (McEwen, Miller, & Bergman, 1991). More tenuous evidence from projectile points in Africa may push that back as far as 11000 b.c. (Blitz, 1988). The focus of this paper, however, will be the adoption and subsequent use of the bow in the Great Basin region of the West.

Turbomachine Stability And Forced Response Prediction, Leland Bert Clark Dec 1992

Turbomachine Stability And Forced Response Prediction, Leland Bert Clark

Open Access Theses

A mathematical model is developed and utilized to analyze turbomachine cascade flutter and forced response. The flutter boundary, defined as the largest value of reduced frequency at which flutter occurs for a given cascade, was evaluated for single degree of freedom torsional oscillation as well as coupled bending and torsional oscillations. The maximum amplitude of forced response in bending and torsion was also considered. The unsteady aerodynamic lift and moment coefficients were determined from unsteady aerodynamic flow models for subsonic flow, supersonic flow with a subsonic axial component and supersonic axial flow. The effect of changing the Mach number, stagger …

Jan Tschichold: Contrast In Theory, Thérèse Hannigan Dec 1992

Jan Tschichold: Contrast In Theory, Thérèse Hannigan

Theses

Jan Tschichold was a brilliant typographer who dramatically influenced graphic design and printing with his contrasting theories of design. He began as a proponent of the so-called "new typography" and then pursued the revival of more traditional styles. Because Tschichold's diametrically opposed theories about typography continue to appeal to a large audience, this exhibit of his evolution as a typographer is useful and important. This exhibit is an overview of his writings and typography concentrating on his dramatic stylistic changes. The exhibit is accompanied by a poster, annotated catalog, and descriptive labels.

Semiconductor P-N Junction Space Charge Region Capacitance, Mohammad Humayun Habib Dec 1992

Semiconductor P-N Junction Space Charge Region Capacitance, Mohammad Humayun Habib

Dissertations and Theses

The classical capacitance voltage characteristics based on the depletion approximation, is adequate at reverse bias, but introduces errors at high forward bias. Because of its inherent simplicity and compactness this classical depletion model is well studied and widely used in circuit simulators. In this work, a new model for the semiconductor space charge region (SCR) capacitance, based on physical justification, will be derived. This new model takes three input parameters, C0 , Vbi and m, thus eliminating the fitting parameter FC currently used in SPICE. This new model is applicable for any applied voltage and will be compared with the …

Connected Painted Rectangles Experiments In Quantitative Shape And Contrasting Elements, Ann Shiogi Dec 1992

Connected Painted Rectangles Experiments In Quantitative Shape And Contrasting Elements, Ann Shiogi

Dissertations and Theses

The thesis consisted of a series of paintings in which the canvases were individually painted in a predetermined way, then arranged and assembled more spontaneously in a final wall construction. Narrow limitations, such as working with only horizontal and vertical compositions and contrasting colors were specified. By working within a method or procedure, and by remaining strict to these guidelines, the ideas inherent in the paintings emerged and were then promoted.

The dominant ideas that developed out of the process of making the paintings were the use of both "found" shapes--found in leftover lengths of support material--and "found" means of …

Speaker Preferences Of Listening Behaviors That Lead To Perceived Listening : A Pre-Condition Of Perceived Understanding, Christine M. Carpenter Dec 1992

Speaker Preferences Of Listening Behaviors That Lead To Perceived Listening : A Pre-Condition Of Perceived Understanding, Christine M. Carpenter

Dissertations and Theses

When attempting to communicate with another person, the success or failure that a communicator perceives, he or she interprets as understanding or misunderstanding. Research has shown that "perceived understanding" or the "feeling of being understood" is important in self-concept development. However, for some time researchers have focused on the listener's needs and the speaker's needs have been given less attention. Yet, the listener's role in meeting the speaker's needs, particularly in providing feedback to the speaker, is of utmost importance if the speaker is to have the "feeling of being understood." This research examined the concept of the "feeling of …

An Object Based Approach Towards The Automation Of Office Procedures Using Intelligent Messages, Robert L. Palumbo Dec 1992

An Object Based Approach Towards The Automation Of Office Procedures Using Intelligent Messages, Robert L. Palumbo

Student Work

Office support systems are used to automate routine office tasks. Since office tasks often require the cooperation of several office workers who may be physically dispersed, it is important to develop advanced communication systems that better facilitate collaborative and cooperative office work among office workers.

In this thesis, we propose an approach to the construction of advanced communication systems in which messages are represented as objects that are “intelligent” and “active” and can therefore perform certain activities (such as interacting with various entities to collect data) and decisions (such as dynamically deciding which user to go to next) on their …

Exploring Archaic Settlement In The Midsouth: The Surface Archaeology Of Cannon And Cheek Bends Of The Duck River, Tennessee, Charles L. Hall

Doctoral Dissertations

During the late 1970s and early 1980s the Department of Anthropology at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville conducted an inventory and assessment of archaeological resources potentially affected by the proposed Columbia Reservoir on the Duck River in Middle Tennessee. Two environmental subdivisions of the Nashville Basin were present in the reservoir area: the patchy Inner Basin and the more homogeneous Outer Basin. As the majority of the archaeological material found was referable to the Middle and Late Archaic Periods, the research design focused on an investigation of Archaic adaptation in this environmentally variable landscape.

Two river bends selected as …

Attitudinal And Perceptual Differences Between Experienced And Novice National Park Users, Rebecca Lynne Van Cleave Dec 1992

Attitudinal And Perceptual Differences Between Experienced And Novice National Park Users, Rebecca Lynne Van Cleave

Doctoral Dissertations

One of the primary goals of the National Park Service is to protect the natural environments of its parks. At the same time the Park Service must provide quality experiences for its visitors. At times these two goals may seem mutually exclusive. For the Park Service to maintain a balance between protection and use management must possess a thorough understanding of the visitors to the parks. The present research sought to extend this understanding.

The goals of this research were: to explore differences in attitudes towards and perceptions of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) by different user groups; to …

Byzantium And France: The Twelfth Century Renaissance And The Birth Of The Medieval Romance, Leon Stratikis Dec 1992

Byzantium And France: The Twelfth Century Renaissance And The Birth Of The Medieval Romance, Leon Stratikis

Doctoral Dissertations

This work hopes to fill the need for a complete treatment of the question of possible influence of the Hellenistic and Byzantine romance on the Old French romance of the twelfth century. Adopting a traditional historical approach, along with a consideration of symbols and motifs, it hopes to trace the coherent development of a genre from the Hellenistic world of the beginning of our era to the religious milieu of early Christianity and ultimately to the translation centers of monasteries and ports and the courts of Western Europe at the time of the Crusades. We conclude that, far from composing …

Doctoral Dissertations

Field, greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate whole plant and cellular response of wild garlic to thifensulfuron-methyl.

Thifensulfuron-methyl activity on wild garlic was evaluated as influenced by rate and time of application, antagonism and sequential application. Phytotoxicity to small grains was also assessed. Thifensulfuron-methyl at 9 g ai ha⁻¹ was the lowest rate observed that suppressed aerial bulblet production greater than 90% when compared to the standard treatment of 2,4-D. Suppression was greatest at the 35 g ai ha⁻¹ applied in late March to early April. The lowest rate for reduction of underground bulbs was 35 g ai …

Biodegradation Of Aflatoxin By Flavobacterium Aurantiacum (Exiguobacterium Aurantiacum), Randall Kent Phebus Dec 1992

Biodegradation Of Aflatoxin By Flavobacterium Aurantiacum (Exiguobacterium Aurantiacum), Randall Kent Phebus

Doctoral Dissertations

Flavobacterium aurantiacum (Exiguobacterium aurantiacum) has been shown to remove aflatoxins from solution, although the mechanism for this elimination is not known in detail. This investigation was undertaken to determine substrate specificity and inducibility of aflatoxin degrading activity in F. aurantiacum cultures. Finally, the cellular fraction exhibiting aflatoxin degrading activity was isolated.

Cells were preincubated for 24 h in 5.0 and 0.5 μg/ml of aflatoxin B1 (AB1) to serve as an induced inoculum. The induced inoculum was compared to noninduced cells grown in tryptic soy broth only. AB1 removal of initial concentrations of 4.0 and 2.0 μg/ml …

Isolating Failure Mechanisms In A Fiberglass/Epoxy Tensile Test Specimen Using Acoustic Emission Signal Parameters, Michael Kouvarakos Dec 1992

Isolating Failure Mechanisms In A Fiberglass/Epoxy Tensile Test Specimen Using Acoustic Emission Signal Parameters, Michael Kouvarakos

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This study used acoustic emission (AE) signal parameters to isolate the failure mechanisms in a 0° unidirectional, fiberglass/epoxy tensile test specimen. Since several failure mechanisms were known to be present, the lack of any distinctly identifiable bands in the original amplitude distribution indicated that there was considerable overlap between the AE signals of the various failure mechanisms. In order to separate the amplitude bands associated with each mechanism, it was necessary to sort on the duration of the AE signal. Two additional plots, counts versus amplitude and hits versus counts, were used to verify that the amplitude distributions were comprised …

Thermally Induced Vibration Of A Cross-Ply Laminated Plate With Hygrothermal Effects (Exact Solution), Stephen Jerry Maerz Dec 1992

Thermally Induced Vibration Of A Cross-Ply Laminated Plate With Hygrothermal Effects (Exact Solution), Stephen Jerry Maerz

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Of increasing importance in structural design is the use of fiber-reinforced polymeric composite material, notably in advanced aircraft and projectiles. These applications expose the materials to varied environmental conditions, therefore the material performance under these conditions is of great interest. One aspect of this is the solution of the dynamic response of a composite structure under elevated temperature and moisture conditions. An exact solution is formulated which describes the hygrothermal effects due to heating and moisture diffusion on one surface of a symmetric cross-ply plate made of AS/3501 graphite epoxy with simply-supported boundary conditions.
