Optimization Of Ranch Management Alternatives In Utah, Scott G. Evans May 1992

Optimization Of Ranch Management Alternatives In Utah, Scott G. Evans

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum combination of various cattle production, range forage, and crop harvesting alternatives available to ranch owners and managers in Utah. While many promising alternatives are available, determining which alternatives to implement is difficult because the total ranch operation must be considered.

Linear programming (LP) is a tool available to ranch managers which allows the profit maximizing combination of improvements to be easily determined. LP allows ranchers to examine the entire ranch operation and to reduce the amount of risk and uncertainty involved in the decision making process.

The typical Utah ranch …

The remaining 1000 acres are classed as land 2 and its assumed wheat yield is 30 …

Utah And Mormon Migration In The Twentieth Century: 1890 To 1955, Todd Forsyth Carney May 1992

Utah And Mormon Migration In The Twentieth Century: 1890 To 1955, Todd Forsyth Carney

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Most Utahns spent the years between Mormon entry into the Great Basin and statehood for Utah pursuing the traditional frontier-rural life, a mode which had been an integral part of the American experience since earliest colonial times. After the Mormon capitulation and statehood, Utah moved into a transitional phase, a phase between the traditional and the modern in which elements of each were mixed and mingled. This phase ended with the Second World War.

This transition to modernity affected migration behavior. Seen in light of migration theory, the Utah experience is something of an anomaly. One theory says that migration …

Nature's Second Course: Water Culture In The Mormon Communities Of Cache Valley, Utah, 1860-1916, Kathryn T. Morse May 1992

Nature's Second Course: Water Culture In The Mormon Communities Of Cache Valley, Utah, 1860-1916, Kathryn T. Morse

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nineteenth-century Mormon settlers in Utah combined a unique set of religious beliefs with a fervent agrarianism and a strong sense of community. They encountered a specific arid environment along the Wasatch Front. A distinctive cultural set of irrigation institutions and practices developed out of the complex interchanges between nature and culture in Cache Valley, Utah, between 1860 and 1916. The structure of water flow, and conflicts over water rights and responsibilities, reflected the fundamental tensions within Mormon communities between individual gain and collective progress; it also reflected the patriarchal essence of Mormon culture.

The season-to-season workings of irrigation institutions that …

Crisis Intervention: An Evaluation Of Services Provided To Families Of Sexually Abused Children In Davis County, Utah, Karen Louise Letts

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study assessed the extent to which victim families are or are not helped by the support services in Davis County, Utah. A sample of 29 mothers of sexually abused children indicated that existing intervention services were greatly underutilized and hard to locate. Seventeen of these mothers reported that they were either ignored by their caseworkers or, conversely, told not to get counseling until their case was adjudicated because of the investigator's belief that any exposure to therapy might erode the child's credibility as a witness. Only 48% of the families were informed of their Victim Rights as required by …

Comparison Of Optimization Methodologies For Sustained-Yield Groundwater Pumping Planning In East Shore Area, Utah, Shu Takahashi May 1992

Comparison Of Optimization Methodologies For Sustained-Yield Groundwater Pumping Planning In East Shore Area, Utah, Shu Takahashi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Combined simulation and optimization models, which are helpful for long-term groundwater planning of complex nonlinear aquifer systems, are developed using alternative modelling approaches. The models incorporate a representation of steady-state, quasi-three-dimensional head response to pumping within an optimization. An embedding model which describes exactly the nonlinear flow of an unconfined aquifer is presented. In contrast with the embedding models presented in the Utah State University Ground Water Model, it directly achieves the optimal solution without a "cycling." To address the nonlinearity of the flow system, response matrix models couple superposition with the cycling procedure. Their linear influence coefficients are generated …

Dating Of Fallout In Lacustrine Sediment In Southwestern Utah, Alex Clark Tikanen Jan 1992

Dating Of Fallout In Lacustrine Sediment In Southwestern Utah, Alex Clark Tikanen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Sandy Cove is located in an area of southwestern Utah which received the highest fallout from Nevada Test Site (NTS) nuclear testing during the period 1951-1959. The reservoir was shown to have a constant sedimentation rate and to be relatively undisturbed. A 40 centimeter (cm) core taken from this reservoir contained sediment deposited after 1974 and did not reach back to the NTS fallout years of 1951 to 1959 or back to the peak worldwide fallout years of 1962-1963. The amounts of cesium-137 (Cs-137) and plutonium-239,240 (Pu-239,240) which were found in a 1974-1979 dated Sandy Cove core section were almost …

A Comparative Analysis Of Human Skeletal Remains From Parowan Fremont, Virgin Anasazi, And Kayenta Anasazi Archaeological Sites, Heidi Roberts

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Human skeletal remains from the prehistoric Parowan Fremont, Virgin Anasazi, and Kayenta Anasazi cultural traditions are examined, to quantify differences in skeletal parameters and burial practices. Statistical comparisons show no significant differences in skeletal metric traits among the 125 individuals studied; While most individuals examined were healthy, the prevalence of periostitis, osteitis, and linear enamel hypoplasia was found to be highest among Virgin Anasazi individuals. Two other pathologies, porotic hyperostosis and cribra orbitalia, were most common among the Kayenta sample and least among the Parowan Fremont sample; From literature review and new data, much variability was found in mortuary practices. …

Diet And Diseases Of Zion Canyon Mule Deer, Zion National Park, Utah, Brenda Cunningham Jan 1992

Diet And Diseases Of Zion Canyon Mule Deer, Zion National Park, Utah, Brenda Cunningham

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Many mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in Zion Canyon, Zion National Park appear to be in poor condition. In this study diet composition, nutritional value of the diet, prevalences of diseases and parasites, and herd composition were examined for further evidence of poor condition. Analysis of forage plants indicated a nutritionally adequate diet. This conclusion was also supported by serum chemistry results. Serum titer levels did not reveal any current infections, however, high eosinophil levels in 84% of animals tested were likely due to parasitism. Cysticeri of two species of Taenia, adult Elaeophora schneideri, and Sarcocystis hemionilatrantis were isolated in necropsies …

In addition it describes the relationship between the original residents and non-residents of Highland with the surrounding villages of Lehi, American Fork, and Alpine.

The Geographical Landscape Of Tabernacles In The Mormon Culture Region, Crystal Wride Jenson Jan 1992

The Geographical Landscape Of Tabernacles In The Mormon Culture Region, Crystal Wride Jenson

Theses and Dissertations

Although tabernacles do not hold the sacred meaning of Mormon temples, they are symbolic landmarks of the culture of the early Mormon Saints. Tabernacles were once an integral part of each community in which they were located. They were often the main buildings in the community, reflecting the coherent, orderly nature of a Mormon town. Today, many of the original tabernacles have been torn down and others are under the threat of destruction.

The first tabernacles built in the Mormon Culture Region were constructed in the 1850s. They were large meetinghouses built for the purpose of holding large general meetings. …

A Study Of African American Women And Their Perceptions Of Life In Utah, Jennifer Caye Demayo Jan 1992

A Study Of African American Women And Their Perceptions Of Life In Utah, Jennifer Caye Demayo

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine, through the use of the ethnographic interview (Spradley, 1979), residential preferences, as well as the stated reasons for relocation of African American women who live in a predominantly White, Utah Mormon culture. The "push and pull" factors that impacted the women's decisions to come to and/or remain in Utah were qualitatively analyzed in some detail. The end goal of the research was to determine whether Utah was perceived as a desirable residence by and for African American women.

Residential preference is a complex issue which requires an in depth explanation. The prominent …

The Geographical Analysis Of Mormon Temple Sites In Utah, Garth R. Liston Jan 1992

The Geographical Analysis Of Mormon Temple Sites In Utah, Garth R. Liston

Theses and Dissertations

The first eight temple sites in Utah were studied to determine important geographical characteristics of each, and to test the hypothesis that Mormon temple sites conform to definitions of sacred space. President Brigham Young of the Church greatly influenced the selection of the first four temple sites, and the construction of each until his death in 1877. Claimed revelation from God to Young and other leaders and members of the Church, was evident concerning the temple sites. The later four temple sites of the twentieth century were approved by the First Presidency of the Church, but local Church leaders and …
