The Suitability Of The Goodenough Draw A Man Test For Use In The Chagga Schools Of Tanganyika, Allan J. Gottneid

Student Work

The principal and staff of the Marangu Teacher Training Center, Tanganyikaf last Africa, have experienced a need for instruments of measurement suitable for studying the psychology of African school children. Several obstacles have effectively prevented the finding of, or the development of such measures. Among these obstacles are limitation of financial resources, limitation of time to devote to research, and limitation of personnel qualified to undertake such research as would be necessary. Another obstacle is more deeply rooted; it is the African himself. In Tanganyika alone, there are nearly 120 tribes, each with its own language and cultural heritage. A …

A Longitudinal Study Of The Relations Between Sex, Intelligence, Reading Grade Achievement, And Rate Of Reading Growth From Grades Four Through Eight, Janice M. Ebert

Student Work

Reading has been acknowledged as one of the basic subjects in formal education experience. School administrators, teachers, psychologists, parents, and other interested persons have stressed the urgent demand for such a skill for solving problems, reasoning, and learning. A considerable amount of time, effort, and attention has been devoted to reading in the elementary school. It has a vital place in nearly every aspect of academic endeavor. Unless a child attains a certain facility in reading, his educational progress is hindered. Snedaker and Horn indicated concern when they stated that pupils must obtain from books a vast part of their …

The Problem Of Time In The Philosophy Of William James, Teruaki Iida Oct 1959

The Problem Of Time In The Philosophy Of William James, Teruaki Iida

Philosophy ETDs

The problem of time has continued to be a puzzle in the history of philosophy, just as "the problem of Being" has. The time which we experience in ordinary life -- not only emotionally, such as we feel, endure, anticipate or regret, but also intellectually, such as we measure and calculate -- it is not "time itself' but consists in individual, concrete movements and changes.

A Proposed Plan For Placement And Follow-Up Services In The Division Of Industrial Education At Prairie View Agricultural And Mechanical College, Prairie View, Texas, Jesse Leon Hill

All Theses

Purpose of the study

Prior to the twentieth century, the administrators of educational institutions in the united states did not assume the responsibility of setting up organized placement and follow-up programs for persons enrolled in their schools. However, by 1910 it had been firmly established that the school is the most strategic place in which to offer such services. Some of the functions of guidance had already been instituted in Boston, Cincinnati, Chicago, and other cities. The study of the programs in placement and follow-up seems to indicate that wherever placement and follow-up services are available, the students receive more …

Four Aspects Of Milton's Samson Agonistes: Imagery, Comedy, Autobiography, Tragedy, Ronald Kutny Aug 1959

Four Aspects Of Milton's Samson Agonistes: Imagery, Comedy, Autobiography, Tragedy, Ronald Kutny

English Language and Literature ETDs

The lengthily extended figures of speech and the many instances of recurrent synonymous modifiers must be evident even to the most casual reader of John Milton's poetic drama, Samson Agonistes. It is difficult to label, in any simple literary terminology, the technique which I shall discuss and attempt to analyze in this chapter. Therefore, I shall borrow a term from the vocabulary of music in order to indicate, with as much precision as possible, the nature of this technique -- leitmotiv.

An Edition Of William Dean Howells' Literary Friends And Acquaintance With An Introduction Treating Literary Reminiscence As A Genre, David Franklin Hiatt Aug 1959

An Edition Of William Dean Howells' Literary Friends And Acquaintance With An Introduction Treating Literary Reminiscence As A Genre, David Franklin Hiatt

English Language and Literature ETDs

Although the literary reminiscence is a highly specialized kind of autobiography, many of the problems encountered in autobiography are worth considering when one attempts to focus on the reminiscence. Before placing Literary Friends and Acquaintance into the broad stream of literary reminiscence that appeared in America in the latter part of the nineteenth century, I should like to consider the critical problems of the autobiographical mode and the relationship between autobiography and literary reminiscence. Then I should like to suggest an approach to the literary reminiscence and to consider several individual reminiscences using this approach.

Anarchism And The Morality Of Violence, Edward Abbey Aug 1959

Anarchism And The Morality Of Violence, Edward Abbey

Philosophy ETDs

The idea of anarchism is embarrassed, however, by its traditional association with illegality and violence. The word itself is sufficient to evoke visions of riot and revolution, bombings and assassinations, in the minds of many who might otherwise be willing to lend to anarchism a measured degree of sympathetic consideration. If anarchism is to regain the intellectual respectability which it deserves, two preliminary quest ions must be answered 1 (1) To what extent is the traditional association of anarchism and violence warranted? And (2), In so far as the association is a valid one, what arguments have the anarchists presented, …

The Role Of Learning In Olfactory Sensitivity, Monroe P. Friedman Aug 1959

The Role Of Learning In Olfactory Sensitivity, Monroe P. Friedman

Doctoral Dissertations

INTRODUCTION: In recent years the psychological literature has reflected an increasing interest in the role of learning in perception. On the theoretical level, this interest is expressed principally by the considerable attention given to two current attempts to account for perceptual learning (Gibson & Gibson, 1955a: Postman, 1955). On the empirical level, the problems of industry and the military have generated a multitude of investigations in this area. These problems range in diversity from the training of military personnel in the identification of aircraft to the training of tasters in the food industry.

The remainder of this chapter will be …

An In Situ Method For Alteration Of Catalytic Activity By Generation Of A Reactant On The Surface Of The Catalyst, Clyde Dunn Alley Aug 1959

An In Situ Method For Alteration Of Catalytic Activity By Generation Of A Reactant On The Surface Of The Catalyst, Clyde Dunn Alley

Doctoral Dissertations

In many researches dealing with catalysis there are properties of the catalyst that are attributed to the effect of hydrogen on the surface of the catalyst. The interpretations of the effect of hydrogen on the catalyst surface range from statements which indicate that surface hydrogen is necessary for the reactions to proceed to statements that surface hydrogen is a poison on the reaction. A clearly interpreted picture of the role of hydrogen at the present time is not available.

Four Dimensional Graphs Of Complex Functions, Malcom Lee Murrill Aug 1959

Four Dimensional Graphs Of Complex Functions, Malcom Lee Murrill

Master's Theses

Complex functions of a single complex variable involve four unknowns, two independent and two dependent variables, and thus cannot be adequately represented in two- or three- dimensional space. Various geometric constructions in both two and three dimensions have been devised in the past, however, in attempts to illuminate complex function theory. The standard and most useful, of these representations is that developed by Gauss and Riemann employing two complex planes simultanesously. These show the correspondence between a particular curve or region in the object plane and its image, as mapped by a given transformation, in the image plane.

Program Analysis Study Of Selected Freshmen Student At Appalachian State Teachers College, Louis Leroy Rogers Aug 1959

Program Analysis Study Of Selected Freshmen Student At Appalachian State Teachers College, Louis Leroy Rogers

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: College dropouts represent an alarming waste of competent manpower. Personal problems of students may be a factor in the dropout situation, and may merit the attention of college staffs. College administrators are realizing that the American student is not the same as a college student of a century ago. The present day college student is an entirely different type, living in a changing and different world. The former concept of the purpose of higher education is not suitable. It emphasized the training of mental faculties. The newer concept of education is concerned with the whole individual.
