A History Of The Danville Military Institute, Robert Erle Edwards Jul 1959

A History Of The Danville Military Institute, Robert Erle Edwards

Master's Theses

As the years roll by, primary sources of historical data are either lost or destroyed. This unfortunate fact has held true in the case of the Danville Military Institute. A number of good pieces of original data have disappeared since the school closed. In order to take advantage of available material before it is lost, this study of the Danville Military Institute was made. This is the first intensive study of the school, which was a credit to its city, its state, and its nation.

“Chamberlain gives last warning to Hitler; German high command reports army winning over poles,” was the headline which dispersed the fog of uncertainty that had enveloped the European situation in the summer of 1939. The false sense of security, into which the democracies had been seduced by Hitler’s dissembling at Munich, was dispelled by the Nazi annexation of Bohemia and Moravia on March 15, 1939. No longer could anyone harbor the delusion that Hitler’s aspirations were limited to the regaining of only German territory.

A History Of The Nansemond River, Virginia, Peter R. Neal Jun 1959

A History Of The Nansemond River, Virginia, Peter R. Neal

Honors Theses

The northern branch of the Nansemond abounds in scenery of the most picturesque and romantic description, and is well deserving the attention of Nature's admirers. The stream is of fresh water, winding some three or four miles in a northwesterly direction from Suffolk, and its average width is about fifty feet. In ascending its intricate windings, you are surprised at the different aspects presented to view. In some instances, the tall and majestic junipers are entirely submerged at the base, and, as you proceed, an elevation will suddenly appear, as if by magic, rising perpendicularly from the river at least …

A History Of General Obligation Bonding In Logan City, Kenneth W. Godfrey May 1959

A History Of General Obligation Bonding In Logan City, Kenneth W. Godfrey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Borrowing is of great importance in meeting local revenue shortages. Philadelphia began the history of local borrowing by financing the construction of a water system in 1789, from a loan of $150,000. By 1843, the seventeen largest cities had an outstanding indebtedness of $125.5 million. In the 1840's and 1850's cities and counties borrowed to construct public works, and aid in the building of railroads. They defaulted on their loans frequently. In spite of the low state of municipal credit, state governments enacted general legislation by which the local governments were granted greater freedom in borrowing. But after the Civil …

A History Of Irrigation In Western Nebraska, Thurlan W. Wendell Mar 1959

A History Of Irrigation In Western Nebraska, Thurlan W. Wendell

Student Work

Much of the history of Nebraska, and especially the history of western Nebraska, is a story of the search for water. The settler in western Nebraska did not find farming an easy or pleasant task and seldom did he find adequate moisture. The early settler found nature a firm and unrelenting force. The winds blew constantly and when the rains came they usually came in the form of a deluge washing the land barren and leaving it "gullied" with canyons. Frequently the rains were accompanied by severe hail storms - storms which pounded the crops into the earth as though …

The Changed Position Of Scientists In The Atomic Age, Mary Ranlett Jan 1959

The Changed Position Of Scientists In The Atomic Age, Mary Ranlett

Senior Scholar Papers

The basis for this Senior Scholar paper is the secondary power of atomic energy- its interweaving effects in government policy and in the attitudes of the government and society toward the scientist. Throughout the paper I have presented a picture of the meaning of science, the scientific personality, the changes in science which are linked with social and governmental changes, and the clash of the government with science, as exemplified by the security hearing of the leading atomic scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The political aspects of the secondary power of atomic energy are shown directly in the Oppenheimer hearing, while …

A History Of Murray To 1905, Clinton R. Ahlberg

Theses and Dissertations

The valley and region in which Murray is located was well known to the trappers and exploreres before the Mormon Pioneers entered the area. The Escalante expedition visited the general area as early as September of 1776, and left a description of Utah Valley and its inhabitants. While in the Utah Valley, the Indians gave the Spaniards information about the valley to the north and the lake there.

Come fifty years later, the region became well known to the fur trappers of the great fur companies. Peter Skene Ogden, Jedediah Smith, and Provost with their companies of men traversed the …

Brigham Young's Philosophy Of History, H. Carleton Marlow Jan 1959

Brigham Young's Philosophy Of History, H. Carleton Marlow

Theses and Dissertations

"Brigham Young's Philosophy of History" attempts to describe how Brigham Young gave order and unity to the hubbub and confusion in which man lived. The laws which gave form and pattern to the baffling, diverse phenomena of and around man receive major attention. This thesis is an expository type of writing rather than an evaluation of Brigham Young's ideas and principles or laws in reference to other philosophies of history, Latter-day Saint theology, the modern natural exact sciences, or in reference to the current views of his times. This thesis is limited to a digestion of Brigham Young's works in …

A History Of The Federal And Territorial Court Conflicts In Utah, 1851-1874, Clair T. Kilts Jan 1959

A History Of The Federal And Territorial Court Conflicts In Utah, 1851-1874, Clair T. Kilts

Theses and Dissertations

In 1847 the Mormon pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake valley, bringing with them their own court system, which was to be their main resource for litigation for the next two years. The Church courts which were set up after 1847 proved insufficient, and in 1849 a need was felt for civil courts which could be used in the litigation with Gentile emigrants that were passing through the valley. To solve this problem, the State of Deseret was formed on March 12, 1849, giving the valley a civil authority. This was to last less than two years, for on September …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Concept Of Individuality In The Thought Of C.G Jung And Sri Aurobindo, Richard Putnam Marsh

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Various issues engage the attention of thinkers during various eras in history. Among those which have occupied commentators on the contemporary state of humanity are the problem of individuality--its origin, its nature, its significance for mankind as a whole--and a problem not unrelated to this: namely, the question of what may result from a cross fertilization of Eastern and Western ways of thought

A Historical Survey And Evaluation Of The Most Prominent Theories That Shakespeare Did Not Write The Works Attributed To Him, Lola Vida Johnson Jan 1959

A Historical Survey And Evaluation Of The Most Prominent Theories That Shakespeare Did Not Write The Works Attributed To Him, Lola Vida Johnson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The question of the authorship of the plays, poems, and sonnets traditionally attributed to the pen if William Shakespeare of Stratford-on-Avon has now been before the public for over one hundred years. Many of the most noted poets, playwrights, and nobles of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries have been assigned the authorship of these works. The controversy can be compared to the controversy over Homer’s authorship. In 1975, Friederick Augustus Wolf proposed that Homer did not write The Iliad and The Odyssey. By 1900, Wolf had been disproven, but the question was one of great importance when it was first …

An Historical Study Of The Pole Vault, Ray Frederick Kring

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The pole vault is an event performed in track and field athletics wherein the athlete, with the aid of a pole 14 and 15 feet in length, attempts to clear a crossbar resting on two pegs supported by two standards. The object of the event is to vault higher than your competitors.

The purpose of this study is to trace the progress made in the pole vault since man first learned to …

The economy was based upon agriculture which prevented the growth of large towns and determined a characteristic of a sparse population living in a comparatively large area. Isolated from Utah by a huge mountain range, the people of Daggett County were closer, in many respects, to the affairs …

A Study Of Early Utah-Montana Trade, Transportation, And Communication, 1847-1881, L. Kay Edrington Jan 1959

A Study Of Early Utah-Montana Trade, Transportation, And Communication, 1847-1881, L. Kay Edrington

Theses and Dissertations

Only a few hardy men had ventured into America's intermountain west prior to the year 1847. Arriving in this year, the Mormons, under Brigham Young, slowly conquered parts of the Great Basin and within a few years had produced a self-sustaining agricultural economy. production of a surplus in farm products awaited only the emergence of a "foreign" market. This market was soon forthcoming.

The developing process of Utah-Montana relations from 1847 through 1881 was a natural occurance. From the very first, men from Utah traveled northward. The Mormon experiment at Ft. Lemhi during the late 1850's was a prime example …
