Teacher Conceptualization And Implementation Of Differentiated Instruction In The Elementary Reading Classroom, Felicia Kristina Joseph
Teacher Conceptualization And Implementation Of Differentiated Instruction In The Elementary Reading Classroom, Felicia Kristina Joseph
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Differentiated instruction (DI) is an approach to teaching that considers the individual needs of students based on readiness levels, interest, learning styles, and learning profiles. This pragmatic, exploratory, sequential mixed-methods study investigated the conceptualizations of teachers at high-performing elementary schools within Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) regarding DI, the degree of successful implementation, and the extent to which the degree of implementation correlates with student achievement in reading. Data were collected from 29 semi-structured teacher participant interviews, two 90-minute observations of each participant's reading instruction, and a comparison of i-Ready reading achievement data over two diagnostic assessments. The participants conceptualized …

The Longitudinal Impact Of Moral Injury On Combat Soldiers: A Narrative Inquiry Study, David Gosling
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study explores the confluence of Narrative Inquiry's three commonplaces of temporality, sociality, and place on the experiences of five combat veterans with combat-designated Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) across the lifespan. In particular, the study examines the longitudinal components of Moral Injury (MI) before, during, and after combat operations. Chapter 4 explores the individual narratives of the participants, Chapter 5 examines common narrative threads between participants, and Chapter 6 is the author's subsequent extrapolations on the subject matter given his own experiences as a combat veteran of the Iraq War.
U.S. High School Counselors' Experiences Of Gatekeeping With Underrepresented Students In The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, Nancy M. Chae
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study explored U.S. high school counselors' lived experiences of gatekeeping in their work with underrepresented high school students enrolled in International Baccalaureate Diploma Programs (IB DPs). A transcendental phenomenological research design was employed with a social constructivist theoretical framework for this study. After conducting a pilot study (N = 5), a purposive, criterion-based sampling method was used to target U.S. high school counselors in IB World Schools with DPs who work with underrepresented students. Twenty-three school counselors (N = 23) participated in the study through three means of data collection to triangulate data sources: semi-structured individual interviews (n = …
Trait Absorption: Correlates And Role In A Mindfulness-Based Intervention For Social Anxiety, Joshua Lipson
Trait Absorption: Correlates And Role In A Mindfulness-Based Intervention For Social Anxiety, Joshua Lipson
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Trait absorption, defined by Tellegen and Atkinson (1974) as “a disposition for having episodes of ‘total’ attention that fully engage one’s representational … resouces”, has been explored in connection to placebo response, mystical experience, religiosity, and synesthesia. However, absorption has not been explored as a predictor of psychotherapeutic outcomes. Over the course of two studies, we sought to gain an understanding of absorption’s trait-level associations, as well as its role as a predictor of social anxiety reduction after a brief mindfulness paradigm. Namely, we hypothesized that individuals higher in trait absorption would experience larger reductions in social anxiety after a …
Filling In The Gaps: Applications Of Deep Learning, Satellite Imagery, And High Performance Computing For The Estimation And Distribution Of Geospatial Data, Seth Goodman
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Many regions around the world suffer from a lack of authoritatively-collected data on factors critical to understanding human well-being. This challenges our ability to understand the progress society is making towards reducing poverty, improving lifespans, or otherwise improving livelihoods. A growing body of research is exploring how deep learning algorithms can be used to produce novel estimates of sparse development data, and how access to such data can impact development efforts. This dissertation contributes to this literature in three parts. First, using Landsat 8 satellite imagery and data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, convolutional neural networks …
Internet-Based Cultural Competence Training For White Undergraduate Students At Predominantly White University, Nyx Robey
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Students from underrepresented racial groups experience higher rates of both explicit and subtler forms of racial prejudice and discrimination (Ellis, Powell, Demetriou, Huerta-Bapat, Carmen & Panter, 2019; Harwood et al., 2012; Ray, 2013; Stevens, Liu, & Chen, 2018; Vaccaro, 2010). Cultural competence training may benefit individuals in celebrating culturally-based differences as strengths, cognitively understanding their experience and cognitively empathizing with the experience of others, as well as building skills to better cross-cultural interactions (Glockshuber, 2005; Minami, 2008; Sue et al., 1982; Sue, 2001 Sue & Sue, 2013). This process can be beneficial particularly for White students (Chao, Wei, Good & …

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Chemical detection is an area of great importance in the shift to more green approaches to industry. Some of the chemical species produced by assorted industries can be harmful, long lived, and challenging to differentiate. Copper(I) iodide (CuI) is a material that readily forms complexes of multiple colors, both under visible and ultraviolet (UV) light. The process of CuI reacting with dimethyl sulfide vapor to produce a color change (vapochromism) has been analyzed to propose mechanistic information about the process. Using the information obtained, a series of potential sensor materials were developed with CuI as the base. The complexes were …

Virginia House Painters 1750-1840/Shad, Herring, And Slavery In The Chesapeake Bay And Albemarle Sound, Jenna Hershberger
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
“Painting, Gilding, Glazing, etc.” This paper uses newspaper advertisements to describe house painters who worked in Virginia between 1760 and 1840. Virginia house painters were a varied group, many from England or of British descent, who began their trade in America as journeymen and masters, convict servants, indentured servants, or apprentices. Among them, enslaved blacks and Indians also practiced the trade. At a basic level, house painters were men with the knowledge to make paint and execute elaborate decorative finishes. From that commonality, however, the skills and services painters offered diverged, especially when they competed with one another and consequently …
Understanding The Lived Experiences, Self Efficacy, And Engagement Of A Group Of Legacy Students At A More Selective University, Grace Hindman Fend
Understanding The Lived Experiences, Self Efficacy, And Engagement Of A Group Of Legacy Students At A More Selective University, Grace Hindman Fend
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the perceptions of a group of legacy students regarding their experiences at a public, more selective institution. Selective institutions have a long history of providing preferential admission review of legacy students. Legacy students are often admitted to selective institutions with lower standardized test scores and lower high school academic achievement than their peers. However, little research exists on how legacy students experience college, in particular their levels of self-efficacy and engagement. My study employed a phenomenological research approach, using a theoretical framework of Bean and Eaton’s (2002) psychological …
Study Of Scalar Extensions For Physics Beyond The Standard Model, Marco Antonio Merchand Medina
Study Of Scalar Extensions For Physics Beyond The Standard Model, Marco Antonio Merchand Medina
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
In this thesis we investigate the phenomenology of beyond the Standard Model scenarios with extra scalar fields. A review and motivation of extended electroweak symmetry breaking is presented. Then we address observational evidence of new physics such as possible lepton flavor violating processes and the relic abundance of dark matter by implementing models with three Higgs doublets. The complementarity between theoretical restrictions and experimental bounds on some of the predicted signals is leveraged to sharpen the allowed parameter space. After that we study embeddings of two-Higgs doublets into the Randall-Sundrum model with emphasis on the scalar fluctuations of the metric …
Reducing Avian Collisions With Human-Made Structures: A Sensory Ecology Approach To Open-Air Settings, Timothy James Boycott
Reducing Avian Collisions With Human-Made Structures: A Sensory Ecology Approach To Open-Air Settings, Timothy James Boycott
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Billions of birds fatally collide with human-made structures each year. These mortalities have impacts on species of conservation concern and potentially on avian populations as a whole. This source of human-wildlife conflict also places economic and operational constraints on various human industries. Furthermore, with continued increases in urbanization, the rate and extent of collisions continues to increase. Efforts to reduce collisions have largely centered on making structures more visible to birds but have been met with limited success. Currently, there is a call for solutions to be tailored to both the environmental context of hazardous structures and to the sensory …

Channeled whelk (Busycotypus canaliculatus Linnaeus, 1758) are predatory marine gastropods that are found in intertidal regions of the continental slope along the U.S. Atlantic coast from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Cape Canaveral, Florida. The channeled whelk is a commercially important species that supports a fishery along the Atlantic coast of the United States. The resource is managed at the state level with minimum landing size (MLS) varying by state. Biological assessments of channeled whelk in the mid-Atlantic and Massachusetts have indicated that females have a low probability of being mature when they enter the fishery. The life history characteristics of …
The Epibiont-Host Interaction Between Zoothamnium Intermedium And Estuarine Copepods, Lucia S.L. Safi
The Epibiont-Host Interaction Between Zoothamnium Intermedium And Estuarine Copepods, Lucia S.L. Safi
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Ciliates are basal eukaryotes from Phylum Ciliophora that were first described 400 years ago, but their origins date back 800 million years. Such early origins have allowed contemporary ciliates to be remarkably diverse in both their species numbers and ecological adaptations. Peritrichia, a subclass of ciliates, represents an ideal model to study ciliate diversity, as its members display complex phylogenetic relationships and can be epibionts colonizing the body surface of other organisms. Epibiotic relationships are ecologically and evolutionarily important due to the extensive adaptations in epibiont biology to the life cycles of hosts. These relationships are also important for host …

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The Longnose Lancetfish, Alepisaurus ferox, is a pelagic marine fish that has a heterodont dentition, including large fangs on both the upper and lower jaws. Their diet is well documented and includes salps, hyperiid amphipods, pelagic polychaete worms, mesopelagic fishes, and cephalopods. However, the function of the heterodont dentition, the structure of the teeth, and replacement mode is largely unknown. We studied a series of A. ferox to describe their dentition and tooth replacement. All teeth are replaced extraosseously. Palatine and dentary fangs develop horizontally in the oral epithelium on the lingual surface of dentigerous bones. Developing fangs rotate into …

"Mehtaqtek, Where The Path Comes To An End": Documenting Cultural Landscapes Of Movement In Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) First Nation Territory In New Brunswick, Canada, And Maine, United States, Mallory Leigh Moran
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The Saint John River emerges from tributaries in the highlands of the state of Maine, arcs north and east into the province of New Brunswick, then winds southward, through vast marshlands, before it empties into the Bay of Fundy. For part of its journey, it forms the international border between Canada and the United States. This river, the Wolastoq, and its large drainage basin and tributaries, forms the heart of the homelands of the Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) First Nation. For many hundreds of years before contact with Europeans, and well into the 19th century, the Wolastoqiyik navigated the land- and waterscapes …

Impacts Of Fertilization On Salt Marsh Resilience: Altered By Location-Specific Drivers, Kenneth Michael Czapla
Impacts Of Fertilization On Salt Marsh Resilience: Altered By Location-Specific Drivers, Kenneth Michael Czapla
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Salt marshes provide valuable ecosystem services to human society, but are currently under threat from accelerating sea level rise and nutrient enrichment. Carbon (C) and mineral accumulation allow salt marshes to maintain elevation above sea level and survive. Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) loading is increasing in many salt marshes, causing negative impacts on marsh resilience such as increased decomposition and decreased below-ground production. However, increasing N may also have simultaneous positive effects such as increased primary production and above-ground biomass, surface sediment accretion, and denitrification rates, which remove excess N from coastal waters. Many studies have been conducted to determine the …
Within-Flight-Period Dynamics Driven By Phenology And Transect Quality, Not Patch Size Or Isolation, In A Specialist Butterfly, Panoquina Panoquin, Sam Mason
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
As sea levels rise, coastal salt marshes, and the organisms for which they provision, face existential threats. A first step in understanding how projected marsh loss and reconfiguration may impact obligate species is to define their contemporary distribution and temporal shifts in structure using dynamic occupancy models. While occupancy models have commonly been applied to multi-annual butterfly studies, few have investigated population dynamics within a single-season. Here, we used Bayesian dynamic use models to define within-flight-period trends in adult salt-marsh skipper (Panoquina panoquin) use and state change probability. In doing so, we developed and validated a fully-Bayesian test for closure, …
Investigating Economic Costs Of Derelict Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus Pots And Preferred Mitigation Solutions In The Chesapeake Bay, James Delbene
Investigating Economic Costs Of Derelict Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus Pots And Preferred Mitigation Solutions In The Chesapeake Bay, James Delbene
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Derelict fishing gear, particularly pots or traps, occupy waters worldwide and cause negative ecological and economic impacts. Derelict pots persist throughout Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the U.S., that supports a valuable commercial fishery for the blue crab Callinectes sapidus. Chesapeake Bay is responsible for 30-40% of U.S. commercial blue crab harvests. Yet, few studies have quantified the impacts of derelict pots on harvest or the perceptions of commercial fishers on derelict pot mitigation activities in this predominantly pot fishery. This thesis examined the impacts of derelict pots on harvest in a field experiment and worked with commercial fishers …
Influence Of Suspended Particle Size And Composition On Particle Image Processing, Estuarine Floc Fractal Properties, And Resulting Estuarine Light Attenuation, Kelsey Fall
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Understanding the nature of suspended particles is crucial to explaining water clarity issues in many estuaries, including the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries. Typical near surface estuarine particles are not individual sediment grains, but rather are clusters of inorganic and organic components known as flocs. Because of their fragile nature, flocs are challenging to observe in-situ, so their influence on the optical properties of the system are not well-known. This dissertation used a combination of state-of-the-art optical instrumentation, including laser scattering and transmissometry, a high-definition particle imaging camera system (PICS), and irradiance meters, along with supporting laboratory analysis techniques …

Efficacy And Unintended Outcomes Of Spatial Property Rights For Fisheries And Aquaculture Management In Chile And In Virginia, U.S.A., Jennifer Beckensteiner
Efficacy And Unintended Outcomes Of Spatial Property Rights For Fisheries And Aquaculture Management In Chile And In Virginia, U.S.A., Jennifer Beckensteiner
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Marine spatial property rights reduce many common pool externalities that plague wild capture fisheries and incentivize productive use for aquaculture. Specifically, Territorial Use Rights for Fisheries (TURFs) are a management tool whereby individuals or groups are granted exclusive access to harvest resources within an area, and are the prevailing management of coastal fisheries in Chile. Additionally, secured spatial property rights appear inherently obligatory for aquaculture development; i.e., private leases in Virginia, where submerged grounds granted to an individual or a company for oyster production are considered a form of TURF. Although the number and extent of spatially managed areas are …
