Retrieval Of Temperature And Pressure Profiles For The Stratospheric Aerosol And Gas Experiment Iii, Michael Charles Pitts Jan 1999

Retrieval Of Temperature And Pressure Profiles For The Stratospheric Aerosol And Gas Experiment Iii, Michael Charles Pitts

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The goals of this research are to develop an algorithm to operationally retrieve profiles of atmospheric temperature and pressure for the upcoming Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) III satellite missions, validate the approach through simulated retrievals, and derive an error budget for the retrieved products. The retrieval algorithm is based on SAGE III multi-spectral measurements of the oxygen A-band absorption feature centered near 762 nm. The retrieved products will consist of vertical profiles of temperature and pressure at 1-km intervals from 1 to 85 km.;The A-band absorptivity measurements are dependent on temperature and pressure in a complicated, non-linear ...

Examination Of A Stress Process Model In People Living With Aids/Hiv, Bret Morgan Sawyer Jan 1999

Examination Of A Stress Process Model In People Living With Aids/Hiv, Bret Morgan Sawyer

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This survey research examined a stress process model (A-B-C) in People Living With AIDS and/or HIV (PLWAs) with point "A" representing stressful life events, point "B" the PLWAs' psychological make-up, and point "C" the emotional consequences. Point "A" was assessed by the HIV-stressor scale which yielded two results: (1) number of stressors experienced, and (2) the PLWAs' perception of how stressful each event was for them. Point "B" was assessed by measuring two constructs: (1) Sense of Coherence (SOC) which measured the PLWAs' ability to find meaning in their illness, and (2) Perceived Health Competence (PHC) which measured the ...

Fashionable Dis-Ease: Promoting Health And Leisure At Saratoga Springs, New York And The Virginia Springs, 1790-1860, Thomas A. Chambers

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Throughout the early years of the American republic and the first half of the nineteenth century, people journeyed from across the nation and Europe to the bubbling mineral springs of upstate New York and western Virginia in search of a medical cure and pleasant company. Promoters lauded the springs for their restorative powers, fashionable clientele, and picturesque scenery. These dubious attributes combined with the profit motive to create one of the earliest and most successful components of the American tourism and leisure industry. Marketing and producing the mineral waters, as well as the spa experience itself, involved innovation, business acumen ...

A Two-Component Aggregation Model, Thomas A. Chisholm Jr Jan 1999

A Two-Component Aggregation Model, Thomas A. Chisholm Jr

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

An aggregation model which allows specification of primary particle size, density, and fractal dimension for two different particle types was written. Three stickiness values are used, the stickiness of each particle type to itself and the stickiness between particle types. Aggregation mechanisms considered include differential settling and turbulent shear. The model is used in three forms. In its simplest form, it operates on a closed system with aggregates breaking up when their size approaches the Kolmogorov scale. If the system begins with two types of primary particles, larger aggregates have uniform composition. A second version of the model includes removal ...
