An Analysis Of Norman Dello Joio's Bagatelles For Harp, Jodi Lynn Pesek Apr 1998

An Analysis Of Norman Dello Joio's Bagatelles For Harp, Jodi Lynn Pesek

Student Work

The Bagatelles for harp were commissioned for the First International Harp Competition by the Hartt College of Music, University of Hartford in 1969. This paper uses a modified parametric analysis to discuss form, rhythm, melody, movement, sound and harmony in the three Bagatelles. The purpose of this analysis is to show the performing har ist the main compositional techniques Dello Joio used in each movement, and the analysis includes suggestions on performance practice. A thorough understanding of what the composer intended in a composition helps the performer with appropriate musical expression. The discussion of the first movement concentrates on form, …

The Relationship Between Nectar Sources And Regal Fritillary (Speyeria Idalia Drury) Butterfly Populations., Jeffrey J. Huebschman Apr 1998

The Relationship Between Nectar Sources And Regal Fritillary (Speyeria Idalia Drury) Butterfly Populations., Jeffrey J. Huebschman

Student Work

I investigated the relationship between nectar source diversity and regal fritillary (Speyeria idalia Drury) butterfly populations at ten native tallgrass prairie sites in eastern Nebraska. Walking-transect surveys were used to establish regal fritillary population-density indices in 1996 and 1997. Flowering-plant surveys were also conducted, coincident with the butterfly surveys, and were used to develop blossom-density, and abundance indices. Spearman rank correlation was used to examine relationships between regal fritillary density indices and plant survey variables. Two significant, positive correlations were identified between (1) 1996 population-density indices and 1996 blossom-diversity indices for known nectaring sources of the regal fritillary (n = …

Tallgrass Prairie Remnants Of Western Iowa Cemeteries., Carrie L. Menges-Schaben Apr 1998

Tallgrass Prairie Remnants Of Western Iowa Cemeteries., Carrie L. Menges-Schaben

Student Work

Tallgrass prairie remnants situated in eight western Iowa cemeteries were sampled during 1995 and 1996 to compare both the frequency and season of mowing and burning on plant species composition. Dominant, native tallgrass prairie species, such as big bluestem (Andropha gerardii), Indian grass (Sorghastrum nutans) and leadplant (Amorpha canescens), generally showed a significant increase with burning, whether mowed or not. Mowing, however, adversely affected other species, including flower spurge (Euphorbia corollate) and porcupine grass (Stipa spartea), whether burned or not. Non-native species, in particular smooth brome (Bromus inermis) increased with mowing and the absence of fire. Overall, my study suggests …

Critical Cultural Theory, Postmodernism, And Mtv: A Feminist Rhetorical Analysis Of Female Artists., Holly Stommes Andrews Mar 1998

Critical Cultural Theory, Postmodernism, And Mtv: A Feminist Rhetorical Analysis Of Female Artists., Holly Stommes Andrews

Student Work

This is a feminist rhetorical analysis of female artists' videos on MTV in the 1990's. Previous analyses support the idea that sex and sexism play a major aspect in MTV videos. However, most research on MTV was conducted in the 1980's and focused mainly on the portrayal of women in male musicians' videos. By focusing solely on female artists of the 1990's, this study proposed three research questions: Are female artists on MTV portrayed in roles that provide alternative images to traditional sexual stereotypes? Do the appearances of female artists on MTV continue to promote them as sex objects? and …

Comparison Of Seeding And Sod-Transplant Methods For Restoring Tallgrass Prairie In Southeastern Nebraska., Gary P. Sullivan Mar 1998

Comparison Of Seeding And Sod-Transplant Methods For Restoring Tallgrass Prairie In Southeastern Nebraska., Gary P. Sullivan

Student Work

Data were collected in Fall, 1993 from a 55-year-old re-established grassland to determine the degree of success of seeding and sodding in re-establishing native prairie species. Species Richness of native species was highest in one seeded re-established site (S = 44), but lowest in a second re-established site (S = 23). Species Richness was second highest at the Native site (S = 42). There was a significant difference (P ≤ 0.05) in Species Diversity between the one seeded and the native treatments. The high diversity in re-established treatments is consistent with that expected of the Intermediate-Disturbance-Hypothesis suggesting the seral nature …

Tolerance And Antisemitism: Reflections Of Post-War America In The Films "Crossfire" (1947), "Gentleman's Agreement" (1947) And "Oliver Twist" (1948), Susan Rips Paley Jan 1998

Tolerance And Antisemitism: Reflections Of Post-War America In The Films "Crossfire" (1947), "Gentleman's Agreement" (1947) And "Oliver Twist" (1948), Susan Rips Paley

Student Work

This thesis explores conscious liberal tolerance attitudes in America after World War II. Its specific focus is antisemitism, and it utilizes Hollywood films Crossfire (1947), Gentleman's Agreement (1947) and the British Oliver Twist (1948) as the context for analysis. The origins of classical antisemitism are examined, as well as the history of antisemitism in England and America. American societal attitudes towards Jews are discussed and depictions of Jews in American films until 1947 are presented. The story and dialogue of each film is introduced, followed by the filmmakers' rationale for championing their films. Prerelease objections and concerns are addressed, and …

The Relationship Between Physical Activity And Flexibility, Tanya Marie Schramm Jan 1998

The Relationship Between Physical Activity And Flexibility, Tanya Marie Schramm

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between flexibility and physical activity levels. Subjects included 128 male (n=64) and female (n=64) volunteers, 19 to 55 years of age. All subjects completed a physical activity questionnaire (which differentiated between work, sport, leisure and total physical activity) and a series of five flexibility tests. Four of the five flexibility tests were completed with the use of a goniometer which measured shoulder flexion, hip flexion, knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion. The sit and reach test was used to assess hamstringlumbar flexibility. After analyzing the data by using Pearson …

Student Work

Odvin Hagen (1898-1967) influenced, established and maintained the Nation's second oldest established "A capella" choir. For Hagen, the elements of effectively organizing and administering a choral program that faced great obstacles is a great product of his lifelong work. Our aptitude to study his achievements and methods of obtaining desired outcomes can help present and future choral directors understand challenges facing their particular program. The first purpose of this study is to examine the classroom/rehearsal techniques of Odvin Hagen. The second purpose of this study was to discover what methods Odvin Hagen used outside of the classroom. Historical information gathered …
