What Is Underneath The Juvenile Ordovician Macquarie Arc (Eastern Australia)? A Question Resolved Using Silurian Intrusions To Sample The Lower Crust, Qing Zhang, Allen Phillip Nutman, Solomon Buckman, Vickie C. Bennett

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: Part B

2020 International Association for Gondwana Research The Ordovician intra-oceanic Macquarie Arc of eastern Australia collided with the eastern Gondwanan margin at ~440 Ma. However, the deep crustal architecture resulting from this assembly is poorly known. This is addressed here by a zircon U-Pb-Hf study of the post-assembly Silurian Browns Creek Intrusive Complex and Davies Creek Granite dykes that intrude into the arc, and not adjacent Gondwanan sedimentary sequences. Zircon U[sbnd]Pb dating integrated with CL imagery indicate two igneous phases at 430-437 Ma and 420-426 Ma and a zircon recrystallisation phase at 395-396 Ma attributed to a late thermal event. The …

Evolutionary Anthropology published by Wiley Periodicals LLC Mortuary behavior (activities concerning dead conspecifics) is one of many traits that were previously widely considered to have been uniquely human, but on which perspectives have changed markedly in recent years. Theoretical approaches to hominin mortuary activity and its evolution have undergone major revision, and advances in diverse archeological and paleoanthropological methods have brought new ways of identifying behaviors such as intentional burial. Despite these advances, debates concerning the nature of hominin mortuary activity, particularly among the Neanderthals, rely heavily on the rereading of old excavations as new finds are relatively rare, limiting …

Single-Molecule Imaging Reveals Molecular Coupling Between Transcription And Dna Repair Machinery In Live Cells, Han Ho, Antoine M. Van Oijen, Harshad Ghodke

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: Part B

The Escherichia coli transcription-repair coupling factor Mfd displaces stalled RNA polymerase and delivers the stall site to the nucleotide excision repair factors UvrAB for damage detection. Whether this handoff from RNA polymerase to UvrA occurs via the Mfd-UvrA2-UvrB complex or alternate reaction intermediates in cells remains unclear. Here, we visualise Mfd in actively growing cells and determine the catalytic requirements for faithful recruitment of nucleotide excision repair proteins. We find that ATP hydrolysis by UvrA governs formation and disassembly of the Mfd-UvrA2 complex. Further, Mfd-UvrA2-UvrB complexes formed by UvrB mutants deficient in DNA loading and damage recognition are impaired in …

Period-One Microwave Photonic Sensing By A Laser Diode With Optical Feedback, Bairun Nie, Yuxi Ruan, Yanguang Yu, Qinghua Guo, Jiangtao Xi, Jun Tong

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

With external optical feedback (EOF), a laser diode (LD) can operate at different dynamic states. In this work, an LD with EOF is set at period-one (P1) oscillation state to generate microwave photonic (MWP) signal for sensing. Firstly, the P1 state boundary of the LD is determined and then the influence of the LD controllable parameters on the boundary is studied by solving the well-known Lang-Kobayashi equations. A set of parameters selection rule for designing an LD based MWP sensing system is obtained. In addition, a measurement algorithm for recovering the displacement from an MWP sensing signal is developed. By …

Bayesian Computation With Intractable Likelihoods, Matthew T. Moores, Anthony N. Pettitt, Kerrie Mengersen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

This article surveys computational methods for posterior inference with intractable likelihoods, that is where the likelihood function is unavailable in closed form, or where evaluation of the likelihood is infeasible. We review recent developments in pseudo-marginal methods, approximate Bayesian computation (ABC), the exchange algorithm, thermodynamic integration, and composite likelihood, paying particular attention to advancements in scalability for large datasets. We also mention R and MATLAB source code for implementations of these algorithms, where they are available.

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

© 2020 Elsevier Ltd Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an industrial chemical that has been widely adopted for various industrial applications, including water and wastewater treatment. Currently, the majority of H2O2 is being produced through the anthraquinone oxidation process, which is disadvantageous due to the requirement of toxic raw materials and high energy input. Recently, microbial electrochemical cells (MXCs), such as microbial fuel cells and microbial electrolysis cells, have demonstrated great potential for effective H2O2 production via cathodic oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR). Previous studies have specified key operational parameters for scaling-up of H2O2-producing MXCs, where improvements in production rate, conversion efficiency, product …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

© 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. Blind signatures play an important role in both electronic cash and electronic voting systems. Blind signatures should be secure against various attacks (such as signature forgeries). The work puts a special attention to secret key exposure attacks, which totally break digital signatures. Signatures that resist secret key exposure attacks are called forward secure in the sense that disclosure of a current secret key does not compromise past secret keys. This means that forward-secure signatures must include a mechanism for secret-key evolution over time periods. This paper gives a construction of the first blind signature …

Cartan Subalgebras For Non-Principal Twisted Groupoid C⁎-Algebras, Anna L. Duwenig, E Gillaspy, R Norton, S Reznikoff, S Wright

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

2020 Elsevier Inc. Renault proved in 2008 [22, Theorem 5.2] that if G is a topologically principal groupoid, then C0(G(0)) is a Cartan subalgebra in Cr⁎(G,Σ) for any twist Σ over G. However, there are many groupoids which are not topologically principal, yet their (twisted) C⁎-algebras admit Cartan subalgebras. This paper gives a dynamical description of a class of such Cartan subalgebras, by identifying conditions on a 2-cocycle c on G and a subgroupoid S⊆G under which Cr⁎(S,c) is Cartan in Cr⁎(G,c). When G is a discrete group, we also describe the Weyl groupoid and twist associated to these Cartan …

Optimization Of Maintenances Following Proof Tests For The Final Element Of A Safety-Instrumented System, Aibo Zhang, Tieling Zhang, Anne Barros, Yiliu Liu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

2019 The Authors Safety-instrumented systems (SISs) have been widely installed to prevent accidental events and mitigate their consequences. Mechanical final elements of SISs often become vulnerable with time due to degradations, but the particulars in SIS operations and assessment impede the adaption of state-of-art research results on maintenances into this domain. This paper models the degradation of SIS final element as a stochastic process. Based on the observed information during a proof test, it is essential to determine an optimal maintenance strategy by choosing a preventive maintenance (PM) or corrective maintenance (CM), as well deciding what degree of mitigation of …

Stock Liquidity And Default Risk Around The World, Sivathaasan Nadarajah, Huu Nhan Duong, Searat Ali, Benjamin Liu, Allen Huang

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

We document the negative effect of stock liquidity on default risk for a sample of 46 countries. We further find that default risk declines following the introduction of the Directive on Markets in Financial Instruments (MiFID)—an exogenous shock that increases liquidity. The effect of liquidity on default risk is more pronounced in countries with poorer investor protection and information environments. Further, this effect is attenuated (strengthened) for firms with greater information efficiency (governance monitoring). Overall, our findings highlight the important role of regulatory settings in shaping the impact of stock liquidity on default risk in international markets.

Identity Work By A Non-White Immigrant Business Scholar: Autoethnographic Vignettes Of Covering And Accenting, Mario Fernando, James Reveley, Mark Learmonth

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

How do immigrants with multiple sources of identity deal with the identity tensions that arise from misidentification within the workplace? In order to answer this question, we reposition two under-researched self-presentational identity work strategies - covering and accenting - as particular types of intersectional identity work. Adopting a minoritarian perspective, we apply this framework to an autoethnographic study of a non-white business scholar's identity work. To the extent that covering and accenting allow the scholar to draw identity resources from non-threatening and widely available social identities, we find that this work enables him to avoid being discredited in the eyes …

The Congruence Effect Between Product Emotional Appeal And Country-Based Emotion: The Moderating Role Of Country-Of-Origin, Felix Septianto, Tung M. Chiew, Nguyen T. Thai

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

Previous research has suggested that country-based emotions (i.e., emotions associated with a country) can influence consumer evaluations of a product from that country. However, it remains unclear when and how country-based emotions can be influential in consumer decision making. The results from an experiment reveal that only for a destination with a less favorable country-of-origin image will the match (vs. mismatch) between the country-based emotion and the emotional appeal of the product advertisement increase the purchase likelihood of the product. These findings are beneficial for local brands in that they can promote tourist spending at their destination by cooperating with …

Does Practice Make Micro-Entrepreneurs Perfect? An Investigation Of Expertise Acquisition Using Effectuation And Causation, Nadeera Ranabahu, Mary Barrett

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

This paper reports on a study testing whether and how the use of effectuation and causation logics influences deliberate practice in businesses started by microfinance borrowers ("micro-entrepreneurs") in Sri Lanka. Using mixed methods, we surveyed clients of a large Sri Lankan microfinance institution and deepened findings from the survey through 24 interviews. In this way, we identified specific patterns of relationships between principles of the two logics and five elements of deliberate practice identified in the expertise literature from cognitive science. We found that both effectual and causal logics (but not effectuation alone) facilitate deliberate practice, an important result since …

Towards An Environmentally Sustainable Rental Housing Sector, Troy W. Heffernan, Emma Elizabeth Heffernan, Nina Reynolds, Wai Jin (Thomas) Lee, Paul Cooper

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

Rental houses in Australia represent approximately one third of all homes, and this proportion has been growing over recent decades. However, the quality, comfort and environmental credentials of these houses are often poor, particularly when compared to owner-occupied homes. With climate change, the urgency increases to move to a more sustainable built environment. Consequently, exploring how to make rental properties more sustainable warrants further investigation and action. Using data gathered from a broad range of experts through a four-stage Policy Delphi technique, findings reveal four key enabling forces: communication, facilitation, incentivization, and regulation. These forces both influence and are influenced …
