This approach was selected to expand understanding of effect of these different objects on the flow and turbulence structures …

Travel Demand Modeling For London, Ontario, Canada, Rahaf Husein Jan 2017

Travel Demand Modeling For London, Ontario, Canada, Rahaf Husein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Travel demand modeling is one of the key areas in transportation planning and engineering. Traditionally, it has been based on four inter-connected modules: trip generation, trip distribution mode choice, and traffic assignment. While the traditional approach remains popular among practitioners, it has been criticized widely due to its zonal aggregate nature. There has been a shift towards using micro-based models that use households and members of households as the units of analysis in lieu of the traffic analysis zones. This thesis contributes to advancing this micro-based paradigm by studying travel demand in the London Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), Ontario. It …

Aquaculture has been the fastest growing food industry worldwide since 1985 and has contributed significantly to the Canadian economy. Thus, methods for increasing aquaculture production are currently being investigated, such as selective breeding programs. Here I developed transcriptional profiles of eight hybrid half-sibling populations of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and examined them for evidence of local adaptation and as a potential marker for marker-assisted selection method. I found evidence of local adaptation among the populations, further supporting this as a driving force behind the large variation witnessed in Chinook salmon life history variation. I used the transcriptional profiles developed for …

Testing The Robustness Of The Circadian Clock, Nathaniel James Bernardon Jan 2017

Testing The Robustness Of The Circadian Clock, Nathaniel James Bernardon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The surface of the Earth receives 24 hour cycles of light and darkness. Most living things have arisen under these conditions, and have evolved circadian clocks to keep track of time. In Drosophila, the circadian clock comprises the genes Clock (CLK) and Cycle (CYC) which are negatively regulated by the genes Period (PER) and Timeless (TIM). CLK/CYC are transcription factors: their targets include PER/TIM, which accumulate as proteins to repress their own production. Light deactivates PER/TIM proteins, periodically activating CLK/CYC, and causing 24h rhythms of transcription activity. Our lab has previously shown that intestinal stem cells are regulated by the …

Design Of An Adaptable Tooling System For Part To Part Variation Processing, Boris Novakovic Jan 2017

Design Of An Adaptable Tooling System For Part To Part Variation Processing, Boris Novakovic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today’s automotive manufacturing facilities use different robotic systems with the specifically designed end of arm tooling (EOAT). Regardless of how accurate these robotic systems may be, they are programmed to repeat the same task and move to the same position repeatedly. As convenient as this process may be, it does not allow robots to automatically readjust to different part variations without the human assistance. This situation is especially noticeable in the plastics manufacturing industry, e.g., fuel tank welding. This thesis describes the systematic design methodology of an adaptable tooling system for a part to part variations processing aimed at automotive …

The Acute Physiological Responses To Leg Extension Resistance Training Using Drop Sets Versus Standard Hypertrophy Training In The Quadriceps Femoris, Alex Waugh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Resistance training (RT) for muscle growth (hypertrophy training – HT) theoretically optimizes the mechanical tension and time under tension (TUT) placed on working muscle, which may be key to activating hypertrophic mechanisms. After prolonged HT, specialized weightlifting techniques like drop set training (DS) – or lifting progressively reduced loads without recovery – may help overcome plateaus in strength and re-stimulate hypertrophy, but evidence for the efficacy of acute DS compared to HT is limited. This thesis compared acute anabolic, metabolic, and intensity responses between DS and HT in the quadriceps femoris using leg extensions. Thirty young males completed, in a …
