The Contribution Of Rigid And Wobbling Masses Of The Leg To Tibial Response Parameters Following Heel Impact., Jeffrey David. Holmes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the contribution of the leg tissue masses (bone mineral content (BMC), fat mass (FM), lean mass (LM), and wobbling mass (WM)), and muscle activation levels to the response of the tibia following heel impacts similar to those experienced during running. A human pendulum was used to deliver controlled impacts to the dominant foot of 20 males and 20 females (mean age 23.8 +/- 2.6 years, body mass 71.8 +/- 16.9 kg, and height 1.7 +/- 0.1 m). Individual tissue masses were determined through use of anthropometric prediction equations. External impact forces, tibial …

Two-Dimensional Measurements Of Dynamic Cumulative Spine Loading In Real-Time., Michael James. Agnew Jan 2003

Two-Dimensional Measurements Of Dynamic Cumulative Spine Loading In Real-Time., Michael James. Agnew

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a real time method for documenting the cumulative low back loads present in lifting tasks using a simplified regression based biomechanical model. Following model development, custom software was created and used with an electromagnetic tracking device (Fastrak(TM)) to calculate cumulative loads in real-time. Estimates obtained from the real-time method (cumulative joint compression, anterior joint shear, posterior joint shear) were compared to estimates from a dynamic link segment biomechanical model (GOBER). Estimates obtained by the real-time method were statistically different than the dynamic biomechanical model in estimates of cumulative compression and cumulative anterior …

User Authentication In Distributed Computing Using Proactive Two-Party Signatures., Arshad Ahmed. Shaikh Jan 2003

User Authentication In Distributed Computing Using Proactive Two-Party Signatures., Arshad Ahmed. Shaikh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To address the challenges of user authentication in distributed systems, many protocols have been proposed. Among them is the Proactive Two-party Signatures Scheme (P2SS). P2SS has not so far been investigated in detail. Using P2SS, I have developed a system, called Proactive User-authentication in a Distributed Environment (PUDE) in which two parties (the client and server) use a 2-part signature algorithm, based on standard (one part) RSA algorithm. In this scheme the client and the server jointly produce the signatures. If the password of the user is compromised, the system can recover by changing the share of the private key …

Variation Of Bloom Filters Applied In Distributed Query Optimization., Yue (Amber). Zhang Jan 2003

Variation Of Bloom Filters Applied In Distributed Query Optimization., Yue (Amber). Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Distributed query processing is important for Distributed Database Systems. Through the past years, the research focus in distributed query processing has been on how to realize join operations with different operators such as semi-join and Bloom Filter. Experiments show that using bloom filters, the hash-semijoin, almost always does better than semi-join for the query processing. However as long as you use bloom filter, you cannot avoid collisions. So in order to get the cheaper processing, some of the past work uses two or more bloom filters to do the hash-semijoin. However several factors still affect the cost and optimization result. …

A Hybrid Load Balancing Algorithm For Coarse-Grained Applications., Xinyu. Gan Jan 2003

A Hybrid Load Balancing Algorithm For Coarse-Grained Applications., Xinyu. Gan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A non-preemptive hybrid load balancing algorithm is proposed for heterogeneous distributed computing environment, since no single load balancing algorithm works well for all kinds of applications and environments. The agents' computing capabilities may also change during runtime because of the background load. This algorithm makes use of the idea of several sub-algorithms. The hybrid model initially classifies the computers and jobs into different groups. Two priority queues are maintained at each worker to record the processes' estimated computing time and the real time. Based on historical experiences, a centralized scheduler can dynamically change the parameters in order to improve the …

Salary Determination In The National Hockey League: The Development Of An Equitable Player Compensation Model., Jess Charles. Dixon Jan 2003

Salary Determination In The National Hockey League: The Development Of An Equitable Player Compensation Model., Jess Charles. Dixon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nowhere else in North America is the performance of an employee so readily visible and so easily measured than in the sport of professional ice hockey (Banister, 1997). "Although the performance of professional athletes may be objectively measured and compared by the vast quantities of statistics compiled by sports analysts, controversy still surrounds whether their individual efforts justify their salaries" (Banister, 1997, p. 47). NHL salaries have become so disparate in recent years that it is quite common for certain 'marquee' players to earn 10--20 times the salary of other players competing on the same team (Banister, 1997). With 50% …

Submergence Effects On Local Scour., Md Rajib. Ahsan Jan 2003

Submergence Effects On Local Scour., Md Rajib. Ahsan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study discussed herein focuses on the local scour created in a cohesionless sand bed by a plane turbulent wall jet with varying levels of submergence from 1 to 20. From the observations of 40 experiments the study reveals that the formation of unstable scour processes, which can be short and long-term in nature, depends on the water depth available above the mound apex for a given initial jet velocity. In case of stable scour process, the growth of the scour hole dimensions follows a linear relation with the logarithm of time beyond which the rate of change in the …

Syntheses And Applications Of Group Vi And Viii-X Heterocyclic-Phosphinimine Complexes., Liam P. Spencer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A class of phosphinimine-based group VI and VIII-X late transition metal (LTM) complexes has been synthesized and evaluated for olefin polymerisation activity. The phosphinimine ligand has been designed to incorporate an imine moiety; a functional group which has been successfully applied in very active LTM olefin catalytic systems. Heterocycles, such as pyridine and imidazole are used to accomplish the integration of an imine group into the ligand. Phosphines employing the heterocyclic group are oxidized by phenyl azides in excellent yields to form phosphinimine ligands. These phosphinimine ligands react with several LTM's, the complexes of which are identified by single crystal …

An Object-Oriented Analysis Technique For Developing Object-Oriented Simulations In Silk., Lia. Zannier Jan 2003

An Object-Oriented Analysis Technique For Developing Object-Oriented Simulations In Silk., Lia. Zannier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Simulation is very popular as an analysis tool for complex systems. A new paradigm shift towards object oriented simulations is hoping to make simulations even more powerful and accessible. However, in order for those not familiar with object oriented techniques to join this shift, methods must be developed for them to build object oriented simulations, until they acquire an understanding of this programming paradigm. This is an attempt to develop a procedure for just such novice model builders. This thesis begins with some background on object oriented paradigm concepts. It then provides an overview of several different object oriented analysis …

Bottleneck Bandwidth Measurement Using Path Algorithm., Jun. Wei

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Network bandwidth is an important resource in the Internet. As greater numbers of people and companies implement their businesses using the Internet, the measurement of network bandwidth, especially the bottleneck-link bandwidth, becomes a critical and challenging issue. To improve the practicability, accuracy and performance of existing network-bandwidth measurement algorithms, such as PathChar, Bprobe and Cartouche algorithm, we have developed a new method: PATH (PAcket-Train with Header) algorithm. PATH is the combination of single-packet and packet-pair algorithms. It is a sender-based algorithm that is straightforward to implement in the Internet. To verify and improve upon the PATH algorithm, we have developed …

Computing The Minimum Perimeter Triangle Enclosing A Convex Polygon: Theory And Implementation., Anna Valentinovna. Medvedeva Jan 2003

Computing The Minimum Perimeter Triangle Enclosing A Convex Polygon: Theory And Implementation., Anna Valentinovna. Medvedeva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Geometric optimization, an important field of computational geometry, finds the best possible solution to a computational problem that involves geometric objects. An attractive fundamental problem in this area is one of approximating a convex n-gon with a simpler convex k-gon, where k < n, and the area or the perimeter of the approximate object is minimized. This problem arises in a wide range of applications, such as geographic information systems (GIS), spatial databases, pattern recognition, and computer graphics, to name but a few. The approximation of convex polygons with their respective enclosing triangles is a particularly interesting problem; however, finding an optimal linear time solution for computing the minimum perimeter triangle enclosing a convex polygon was a long-standing open problem, which turned out to be more difficult than determining an enclosing triangle of minimal area. In this thesis, we suggest some theoretical and practical justifications for the linear time complexity of a recently proposed optimal solution and provide an efficient and robust implementation of that solution. A four-factor model had the best fit to the data, and based on the nature of the subtests associated with each construct they were labeled Individual Item Search, Reading-Related, Sequencing, and Complex Visual Analysis. Composite scores were calculated …

Parallel Stochastic Context-Free Grammar Training For Trna Secondary Structure Prediction., Kaiyuan. Shi Jan 2003

Parallel Stochastic Context-Free Grammar Training For Trna Secondary Structure Prediction., Kaiyuan. Shi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, parallel computing methods are used to construct a stochastic context-free grammar for analyzing the secondary structure of tRNA molecules. Stochastic context-free grammars are basically probabilistic languages that parse a sequence/molecule and output its probability of whether or not it belongs to the sequence family modeled by the grammar and at the same time predict the molecule's secondary structure. Stochastic context-free grammars can be converted from corresponding context-free grammars, by assigning probabilities to the grammar's production rules. The use of stochastic context-free grammars to analyze the secondary structure of RNA molecules was limited due to time and space …

The Effects Of Trunk Muscle Fatigue And Load Timing On Spine Mechanics During Sudden Hand Loading., Diane Eva. Grondin Jan 2003

The Effects Of Trunk Muscle Fatigue And Load Timing On Spine Mechanics During Sudden Hand Loading., Diane Eva. Grondin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sudden loading of the trunk, especially when it is unexpected, leads to higher muscle forces. Muscle fatigue, on the other hand, decreases the force producing capacity of muscles. The current experiment provides insight into the control of spine mechanics during trunk muscle fatigue in a situation of sudden loading that affects spinal stability. Fifteen females received a sudden load in the hands, at a time that could be anticipated and at a time that could not. Participants received these loading trials (a) while rested, (b) with back muscle fatigue, and (c) with a combination of back and abdominal muscle fatigue. …

Enhanced Pl-Wap Tree Method For Incremental Mining Of Sequential Patterns., Min Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sequential mining as web usage mining has been used in improving web site design, increasing volume of e-business and providing marketing decision support. This thesis proposes PL4UP and EPL4UP algorithms which use the PLWAP tree structure to incrementally update sequential patterns. PL4UP does not scan old DB except when previous small 1-itemsets become large in updated database during which time its scans only all transactions in the old database that contain any small itemsets. EPL4UP rebuilds the old PLWAP tree using only the list of previous small itemsets once rather than scanning the entire old database twice like original PLWAP. …

A 2-Digit Multidimensional Logarithmic Number System Filterbank Processor For A Digital Hearing Aid., Hongbo (Jennifer). Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses the design, implementation, and evaluation of a filterbank for digital hearing aids using a Multidimensional Logarithmic Number System (MDLNS). Hearing loss is a function of both frequency and input level. In a typical digital hearing instrument, the hearing loss compensation is performed by separating the incoming sound into several frequency bands which are then compressed to allow the amplification of low level signals while maintaining the amplitude of high level signals. The demands of low power consumption and small size have led to a number of advances in algorithms, semiconductor technologies and system architectures for completely-in-canal (CIC) …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop an optimization model of the spine that, incorporating a measure of spinal stability as a constraint, allowed for realistic predictions of trunk muscle and spine compression forces. A 3-dimensional, 52 muscle, single joint model of the lumbar spine was developed and tested in situations of pure trunk flexor and lateral bend moments. Spinal stability, about each anatomical axis, was calculated at the L4/L5 spinal joint. Estimates of the optimal level of spinal stability, in a given loading situation, obtained through the use of regression equations developed from experimental findings, were utilized as …

Authorization-Enhanced Security Framework For Ogsa Support., Haiyan. Cheng Jan 2003

Authorization-Enhanced Security Framework For Ogsa Support., Haiyan. Cheng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Security plays an important role for a large distributed system in an open community. Without enough knowledge about the user, it is hard to make access decision to the local resources. Current Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) uses a trusted third party, called Certificate Authority (CA), to check the identity of the users. The assumption of PKI is that every entity trusts CA absolutely and equally. This is also a weakness of PKI. The security problem in a Single-Sign-On (SSO) environment is more difficult to manage. Most of the current SSO security approach relies heavily on the pre-established trust relationship. This …

Characterization Of A Novel Human Cap2 Interacting Protein: Neuronal Calcium Binding Protein 1 (Necab1)., Emilio P. Mottillo Jan 2003

Characterization Of A Novel Human Cap2 Interacting Protein: Neuronal Calcium Binding Protein 1 (Necab1)., Emilio P. Mottillo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The actin cytoskeleton is implicated in numerous processes such as cellular division, migration, endocytosislexocytosis, and more recently synaptic plasticity. Important players in controlling cytoskeletal rearrangements are the Cyclase Associated Proteins (CAPs) which are thought to link cell signalling to the dynamics of the actin cytoskeleton, via sequestration of monomeric actin subunits. CAPs are conserved throughout evolution and possess conserved functional domains. Previous studies have suggested a link between CAP proteins and vesicle trafficking and this study focussed on characterizing binding partners of human CAPs. Using a two hybrid screen of a human adult brain cDNA library, a novel human CAP …
