Relative Stability Of The Neuropsychological Profiles Of Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities (Nvld) And Basic Phonological Processing Disabilities (Bppd) From Middle Childhood To Early Adolescence., Nikhil S. Koushik

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study is a longitudinal comparison of relative neuropsychological assets and deficits for young and older children with Nonverbal Learning Disabilities (NLD) and Basic Phonological Processing Disabilities (BPPD). The sample for the investigation was comprised of clinic-referred children who had been diagnosed with either NLD or BPPD by an experienced clinical neuropsychologist. A total of 18 children, nine in each of the NLD and BPPD groups were selected. The children were between 7 and 8 years of age at first testing, and 9 and 14 years of age at second testing, inclusive. The NLD and BPPD groups were compared …

An Empirically Derived Typology Of Behaviour Problems Based On Parent Ratings Of Preschool Children., Mohsan R. Beg Jan 2003

An Empirically Derived Typology Of Behaviour Problems Based On Parent Ratings Of Preschool Children., Mohsan R. Beg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current study was to build upon prior efforts to produce a meaningful typology of preschool children's behaviour problems. Distinct empirically-derived subtypes were identified through the use of cluster analytic techniques and the reliability and validity of generated subtypes was tested. Archival data were collected on a sample of 268 children, aged 2 1/2 to 5-years old, who were referred for an initial screening to determine their suitability for an Assessment/Day treatment program within a preschool children's mental health centre. Parents of the referred children had completed the Parent Rating Scales for Preschool Children from the Behavior …

The Underlining Test: An Exploration Of Its Construct Dimensions In A Clinic-Referred Sample., Brent Albert. Hayman-Abello Jan 2003

The Underlining Test: An Exploration Of Its Construct Dimensions In A Clinic-Referred Sample., Brent Albert. Hayman-Abello

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the number and nature of factors underlying performance on The Underlining Test (UT), a set of 14 speeded cancellation tasks (subtests) containing letters, digits or shapes, separately or in strings. Using data from a large (n = 844) heterogeneous sample of clinic-referred children, several hypothesized models containing one to four latent constructs were examined using confirmatory factor analysis. A four-factor model had the best fit to the data, and based on the nature of the subtests associated with each construct they were labeled Individual Item Search, Reading-Related, Sequencing, and Complex Visual Analysis. Composite scores were calculated …

Assessing Interpersonal Dominance And Affiliation On The Thematic Apperception Test: The Development And Validation Of Two Orthogonal Scales., Kerry Allyson. Collins Jan 2003

Assessing Interpersonal Dominance And Affiliation On The Thematic Apperception Test: The Development And Validation Of Two Orthogonal Scales., Kerry Allyson. Collins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Interpersonal Circumplex Model (ICM; Freedman et al., 1951; Leary, 1957), a circular representation of interpersonal behaviour, identifies the components of interpersonal dominance and affiliation that underlie social interactions. The present study addresses the deficiency of psychometric scales to measure interpersonal constructs on the TAT by developing the Interpersonal Dominance and Affiliation TAT Scales. Twenty-five undergraduate students rated 100 sample TAT stories for the level of interpersonal dominance and affiliation depicted. Reliability analyses of these ratings were then utilized to empirically establish anchor points for the interpersonal TAT scales. Preliminary validity of the scales was further evaluated in a sample …

Epistemological Style And Its Relationship To Creativity And Depression., Jennifer Jayne. Scobie Jan 2003

Epistemological Style And Its Relationship To Creativity And Depression., Jennifer Jayne. Scobie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study was undertaken to examine the relationship between epistemological style, creativity, and depression. A measure assessing epistemological styles was administered to 177 undergraduate students in different degree programs at the University of Windsor. The participants were divided into three groups based on their dominant epistemological style (empirical, rational, and metaphorical). The three epistemological style groups were then compared on measures of creativity and depression. Data analysis entailed the use of descriptive statistics, correlations, and multivariate statistics to test the hypothesis that epistemological style is related to creativity and/or depression. Results indicate statistically significant differences among epistemological style groups …

Comparing Wais-Iii Profiles Of Traumatic Brain Injury And Chronic Pain., Cherisse Margo. Mckay Jan 2003

Comparing Wais-Iii Profiles Of Traumatic Brain Injury And Chronic Pain., Cherisse Margo. Mckay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common neuropsychological phenomenon characterized by both behavioural and cognitive sequelae, the most common of which include working memory and information processing deficits. To improve its usefulness as a neuropsychological measure, the newest revision of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, the WAIS-III, developed specific tasks tapping these deficits (e.g., Symbol Search, Letter-Number Sequencing). Despite considerable research examining WAIS performance in TBI sufferers, previous research failed to compare TBI sufferers to other clinical groups with observed processing speed deficits, such as chronic pain sufferers. This study compared the WAIS-III profiles of both mild and moderate-severe TBI …

Participants were interviewed using hypothetical vignettes depicting motivational and directive interventions, …

South Asian Women In Canada: Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence., Sandeep. Hunjan Jan 2003

South Asian Women In Canada: Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence., Sandeep. Hunjan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent recognition of the scope and consequences of intimate partner violence in North America has inspired research in the area. However, research and service have focussed on white dominant group women. Since Canada is increasingly multicultural, it is important to look at this social problem in non-dominant ethnocultural groups. The South Asian community, like other communities of colour, has been given little research and service attention. Thus the purpose of the present study was to examine the experience, interpretation, and reaction to violence of South Asian women living in Canada, using a qualitative approach to describe the central themes and …

Imagery Use In Dependent And Non-Dependent Male Weight Lifters., Arvin J. Kim Jan 2003

Imagery Use In Dependent And Non-Dependent Male Weight Lifters., Arvin J. Kim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Exercise addiction has been referred to in the literature as exercise dependence (Frederick & Morrison, 1996), compulsive exercise (Diekhoff, 1984), and obligatory exercise (Thompson & Pasman, 1991). Hall (1995) originally proposed that imagery might be linked to exercise addiction. Based on Hall's proposal, Rodgers, Hall, Blanchard, and Munroe (2001) examined the use of imagery by obligatory exercisers involved in a variety of activities. Results indicated that energy imagery and technique imagery, when combined, accounted for approximately 20% of the variance in exercise dependence. Sport imagery research has found that imagery use differs from sport to sport (Munroe, Hall, Simms, & …

Rorschach And Mmpi-2 Construct Specific Convergence: Disentangling The Roles Of Response Style And General Psychopathology, Marc F. Carriere Jan 2003

Rorschach And Mmpi-2 Construct Specific Convergence: Disentangling The Roles Of Response Style And General Psychopathology, Marc F. Carriere

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although the MMPI-2 and Rorschach are commonly used and researched tests, studies examining the convergence of similarly named constructs (e.g., depression) have typically found that the tests are unrelated (Archer & Krishnamurthy, 1997). Meyer (1997, 1999) and Meyer, Riethmiller, Brooks, Benoit, and Handler (2000) established that choosing participants who respond to the Rorschach and the MMPI-2 in a similar way based on their placement on the first unrotated principal component (FUPC) moderates convergence between similarly named constructs (e.g., depression). However, it has been unclear as to whether these results were due to specific construct convergence or whether they were due …

Attachment, Individuation, And Perceptions Of Early Caregiver Relationships Among Suicidal And Non-Suicidal Adolescents., David Michael. Ledgerwood Jan 2003

Attachment, Individuation, And Perceptions Of Early Caregiver Relationships Among Suicidal And Non-Suicidal Adolescents., David Michael. Ledgerwood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to investigate how attachment, individuation, perceptions of family life, and family related experiences and relationships contribute to our understanding of suicidal ideation and attempt in adolescents. Adolescent volunteers (N = 153, 98 female and 55 male) recruited from four youth centers in Southwestern Ontario participated in a survey. Participants completed a series of questionnaires consisting of questions about early experiences (e.g., close relationships, abuse, addiction, suicide history), attachment in romantic relationships, emotional autonomy from parents, relationship with parents, perceptions of family life, depression and suicidal ideation. Results revealed significant differences based on suicide history (i.e., past attempt …

Adjustment To Retirement: Is The Presence Of Children In The Household Related To Retirement Stress?, Michelle W. Langlois Jan 2003

Adjustment To Retirement: Is The Presence Of Children In The Household Related To Retirement Stress?, Michelle W. Langlois

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Retirement is a major life transition that approximately 30% of retirees find stressful. Research has typically focused on identifying factors that predict retirement stress. The present study examined if household composition and retirement stress were related while controlling for financial status, type of retirement, self-assessed health, and perceived family social support. Results indicated that there was no difference between retirees with children in the home and retirees whose children have left the home in regards to life satisfaction, perceived stress in retirement, and global perceived stress. Childless retirees were found to have higher life satisfaction than those with children (regardless …

Conceptualizing Forgiveness Within The Context Of A Reversal Theory Framework: The Role Of Personality, Motivation, And Emotion., Larissa Rene. Goertzen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the construct of forgiveness within the context of a reversal theory framework. A sample of 262 undergraduate students, ranging in age from 18 to 25 years and including 122 males and 140 females, completed the Motivational Style Profile (MSP), the Enright Forgiveness Inventory (EFI), the Willingness to Forgive Scale (WFS), and a Time-Factor Questionnaire (TFQ) that was designed for this study. The forgiveness ratings of the participants who achieved high-dominance in arousal-avoidance were compared to those of the participants who achieved high-dominance in arousal-seeking. Similarly, the forgiveness ratings of the participants who …

Young Adult Parasuicidal Behaviour, Problematic Love Relationships, And Shame., Michael Edward Anthony. Oosterhoff Jan 2003

Young Adult Parasuicidal Behaviour, Problematic Love Relationships, And Shame., Michael Edward Anthony. Oosterhoff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to address the absence of psychological theory explaining the nature of young adult parasuicide by moving beyond the generic demographic and epidemiological correlates and developing a more focussed and practically viable conception of the psychological processes involved. Three hundred twenty-seven young adults (ages 18--25) were recruited to develop this psychological conception. Building upon past investigation that demonstrated problematic romantic and family relationships were related to depression and suicidal behaviour in young adults, this current research examined three additional developmentally relevant variables. These variables, shame, self diversity, and interpersonal dependence, are conceptually linked with the …

Psychosocial Subtyping And Brain Metabolism In Children With Epilepsy., David W. Collins Jan 2003

Psychosocial Subtyping And Brain Metabolism In Children With Epilepsy., David W. Collins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Past research has indicated that psychosocial dysfunction in children with epilepsy is a significant area of concern. Psychosocial functioning in children with epilepsy has typically been broadly defined in relation to various control groups. The present investigation provided a more multidimensional classification to examine psychosocial functioning in these children. In Study 1, behavioural ratings from the Personality Inventory for Children-Revised (PIC-R) were subjected to cluster analyses, yielding a psychosocial typology. Based on clinical scale elevations of the mean PIC-R profiles, the participants were classified into six subtypes of psychosocial functioning: Cognitive-Somatic, Cognitive-Internalized, Cognitive-Externalized, Cognitive-Social Isolation, Internalized Psychopathology, and Somatic Concern. …

Aggressive Boys' Attributions Of Emotions And Intentions In Social Situations., Wendy. Manel Jan 2003

Aggressive Boys' Attributions Of Emotions And Intentions In Social Situations., Wendy. Manel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study compared aggressive and non-aggressive boys' attributions of emotions and intentions in social situations. Forty males aged 9--12 years of age participated in this study. The aggressive group (n = 20) was referred from three different children's mental health centers. The non-aggressive group (n = 20) consisted of boys recruited from the community. Participant's parents completed two measures assessing behaviour problems in childhood. Participants were presented with 12 vignettes in which one child was involved in behaviour, which resulted in a negative outcome for another child. For half of the stories participants were asked to imagine themselves as the …

Body Image And Exercise: The Role Of Eating Pathology, Internalization, And Self-Efficacy., Kelty L. Berardi Jan 2003

Body Image And Exercise: The Role Of Eating Pathology, Internalization, And Self-Efficacy., Kelty L. Berardi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Body image dissatisfaction has been demonstrated to predict engagement in a variety of health-related activities, including exercise. However, not all individuals who are dissatisfied with their bodies engage in exercise. The purpose of the study was to examine how body image dissatisfaction interacts with specific variables to influence exercise behaviour. These variables were eating pathology, internalization of social standards of attractiveness, and self-efficacy related to exercise. Participants included 194 female undergraduate students who completed a questionnaire assessing exercise participation, the Body Image Ideals Questionnaire (BIQ), the Revised Restraint Scale (RRS), the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ), and the Exercise …

The Effect Of Depression On Memory Performance Following Traumatic Brain Injury., Michelle Anne. Keiski Jan 2003

The Effect Of Depression On Memory Performance Following Traumatic Brain Injury., Michelle Anne. Keiski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current study was to compare the memory performance of depressed TBI subjects and non-depressed TBI subjects. The hypothesis was that differences between the groups would emerge on the recall and/or recognition components of the California Verbal Learning Test-II (CVLT-II) and the Rey Complex Figure Test (RCFT), after covarying a composite score reflecting neuropsychological impairment. The neuropsychological test results of 76 subjects who had sustained mild to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) were obtained retrospectively. The subjects were classified as depressed or non-depressed on the basis of depression scores on the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI). The findings …

The Effects Of Gender And Marital Status On Simulated Hiring Decisions., Simone (Maheu). Arbour Jan 2003

The Effects Of Gender And Marital Status On Simulated Hiring Decisions., Simone (Maheu). Arbour

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and upper-year business students (N = 89) evaluated applications for an upper-level management position. A 2 x 2 (applicant gender X marital status) between subjects design was used to examine the effects of the independent variables on a variety of work-related dimensions. Rather than having an overall consistent effect on the participants' evaluations of the applicants, gender and marital status affected distinct work-related variables. Gender influenced measures of work habits (favoring females over males) while marital status influenced measures of emotional stability (favoring married applicants over single applicants) and organizational commitment (favoring single applicants over …

Testing The Harris-Lingoes Subscales By Gender Using Confirmatory And Exploratory Factor Analysis., Nicole Denise. Gervais Jan 2003

Testing The Harris-Lingoes Subscales By Gender Using Confirmatory And Exploratory Factor Analysis., Nicole Denise. Gervais

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Harris-Lingoes subscales of the MMPI-2 (Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989) give more precise breakdowns of symptoms in the Depression, Hysteria, Psychopathic Deviate, Paranoia, Schizophrenia, and Hypomania clinical scales. These rationally derived subscales were tested using confirmatory factor analyses. The analyses indicated misspecification of the models, supporting the decision to explore the parent scales through the use of exploratory factor analysis. The exploratory factor analyses uncovered subscales that may be of clinical utility. Differences in factor structure based upon gender were also found in the analyses. The implications of these findings are discussed.Dept. of Psychology. Paper copy at …
