Research Reports
Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) board members are responsible for establishing a long-range transportation vision for their metropolitan area and for making a variety of other significant transportation planning and programming decisions. These decisions have noteworthy and long-lasting impacts on the character of their communities, including the impact on system-wide and corridor-level congestion. Yet, the vast majority of MPO board members come to their position without any background in transportation system development and even less on the nature of congestion. This training program, created under the guidance of the Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (AMPO), the National Association of Regional Councils …

Advancing Equity And Congestion Relief: An Investigation Of On-Demand Shared Rides For Underserved Populations, Ipek Nese Sener, Austin Sibu, Audrey Cabay
Research Reports
Transportation network companies (TNCs) and microtransit are changing the way people travel by providing dynamic, on-demand mobility that can supplement public transit and personal vehicle use. However, heavy use of such motorized vehicles among all sociodemographic populations could contribute to increased vehicle miles traveled, congestion, and/or greenhouse gas emissions. To balance the objectives of increasing mobility and access for underserved communities while simultaneously mitigating the potential adverse impacts of increased motor vehicle use, well-designed policy strategies, such as pooling and first-mile/last-mile linkages, are needed. In this study, we applied a mixed-method approach to examine on-demand transportation services for underserved populations …
Placement And Management Of Bus Bypass Segments In Dense, Congested Cities, Nadav Bronicki, Jean C. Doig Godier, Michael J. Cassidy
Placement And Management Of Bus Bypass Segments In Dense, Congested Cities, Nadav Bronicki, Jean C. Doig Godier, Michael J. Cassidy
Research Reports
In this research, simulation is used to explore how a bus bypass segment, also called a queue jump, affects traffic on a signalized arterial. Residual queues form at the site’s critical bottleneck and expand to street links upstream. A bypass, when designed to serve a bus stop as per AASHTO guidelines, is shown to reduce bus delays—if the stop resides on a congested link that is upstream of the one feeding traffic to the critical bottleneck. In contrast, using a bypass for a bus stop located immediately upstream of the critical bottleneck starves that bottleneck of flow. The damage thus …
Network Control In Realistic Settings With Heterogeneous Vehicles, Keke Long, Xiaopeng Li, Qianwen Li
Network Control In Realistic Settings With Heterogeneous Vehicles, Keke Long, Xiaopeng Li, Qianwen Li
Research Reports
Vehicle scheduling in roadway conflict areas is a common yet challenging problem due to the large vehicle population and heterogeneity, including the significant presence of transit vehicles. Traditional methods are time-consuming and fail to meet real-time operation needs. This study proposes a platooning strategy for connected and automated vehicles in conflict areas. Vehicles are clustered into platoons and treated as scheduling units, reducing problem complexity. Theoretical analyses show a bounded solution gap between single-vehicle and platoon-based strategies of vehicle delay. Numerical experiments confirm the superiority of the proposed strategy in reducing problem size without significant loss of optimality. This platooning …
