Update Of Barton Springs Water Quality Data Analysis - Austin, Texas, Martha Turner
Update Of Barton Springs Water Quality Data Analysis - Austin, Texas, Martha Turner
KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports
Barton Springs, the major discharge point for the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer, is primary habitat for the endangered Barton Springs salamander (Eurycea sosorum), supplies a portion of Austin's drinking water, provides winter and drought baseflow to the Colorado River downstream, and is an important recreational resource. Significant time trends in Barton Springs have not been previously identified. However, the passage of time, continuing development, and increased data collection efforts combined with recognition of the importance of variable recharge/discharge conditions has led to additional data analysis. The current analysis of long term water quality records (1975-1999) from Barton …

Uis Management Guidelines For Show Caves, Union Internationale De Spéléologie
KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports
From the Introduction: "The concept of establishing guidelines to be used as general parameters for good show cave management, originated during informal discussions between members of the International Show Caves Association at the time of the inaugural meeting of ISCA in Genga, Italy, in November 1990. These discussions continued over time and were first drafted for consideration at an ISCA meeting held on 17th September 2004 during the 30th Anniversary of the opening of Frasassi Cave, in Italy, to the public. The idea of creating guidelines, received strong recommendations from the UIS Department of Protection and Management at the 14th …

Model Ordinance For Development On Karst In Kentucky, James C. Currens
KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports
This model ordinance is intended as a source of text from which a Planning Authority may choose segments applicable to its experience, in its location, and the needs of its citizens. The model ordinance may be adopted in whole or in part. It can be modified, rewritten, or rearranged. Its provisions can be selected individually to supplement existing ordinances or the document as a whole can be used as a framework to develop an ordinance with predominantly new language, tailored to the local conditions and needs. -- Author Open Access - Permission by Author(s) See Extended description for more information.
Barton Springs Salamanders, Spring Discharge And Dissolved Oxygen An Update To Dr-07-07 Bss&Abs Salamander Data Report 2006 And Sr-04-06 Some Water Quality Threats To The Bbs At Low Flows, Martha Turner
KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports
An evaluation of salamander counts, spring flowrates, and dissolved oxygen concentrations was completed to update previously collected data. Originally, this evaluation was used to recommend a pumping limit for sustainable yield to the Barton Springs Edwards Aquifer Conservation District. The primary purpose of the current evaluation was to verify correlations between flow, dissolved oxygen, and surface count data of the endangered Barton Springs Salamander. Significant correlations provide the statistical basis for setting thresholds for Barton Springs flows related to a water quality parameter commonly used in aquatic life support. The pattern previously observed in Barton Springs Pool, with salamander counts …

Planner's Guide To Wetland Buffers For Local Governments, Rebecca L. Kihslinger, James M. Mcelfish Jr., Sandra S. Nichols
KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports
This guide for planners is based on detailed examination of approximately 50 enacted wetland buffer ordinances and nine model ordinances, and upon several hundred scientific studies and analyses of buffer performance. This guide identifies both the state-of-the-art and the range of current practice in the protection of wetland buffers by local governments. Local governments considering enacting or amending a wetland buffer ordinance will find here what they need to know to manage land use and development in these important areas. The upland area surrounding a wetland -- the wetland buffer -- is essential to its health and survival. Healthy wetlands …

Potential Sources For The High Nitrate Levels In Stillhouse Hollow Spring, Martha Turner
Potential Sources For The High Nitrate Levels In Stillhouse Hollow Spring, Martha Turner
KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports
High nitrate levels were observed in Stillhouse Hollow Spring. These levels are of concern for aquatic life. Deformed salamanders were found in the spring run, and although the cause for the deformity is unknown, parameters with abnormal levels are being investigated and those levels are reduced where possible. To reduce nitrates, the source must be identified. Lawn fertilizer appears to be the most likely source of nitrates, while leaking sanitary sewer lines and bat guano are not major contributors. Open Access See Extended description for more information.
Response Tier Development Document Barton Springs Salamander Catastrophic Spill Plan, Martha Turner, Lisa O'Donnell
Response Tier Development Document Barton Springs Salamander Catastrophic Spill Plan, Martha Turner, Lisa O'Donnell
KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports
The Barton Springs Salamander Catastrophic Spill Plan describes when and how endangered salamanders would be protected or rescued should a catastrophic spill occur in the Barton Spring watershed. The best response to any particular spill depends on a variety of factors, thus an effective spill response plan requires a method to determine thresholds that will elicit each tier of salamander rescue efforts. This plan focuses primarily on developing response tiers for gasoline, since it is considered to be the most common problematic spilled material with high toxicity and the potential for very large spills., The method developed for gasoline is …
Groundwater Availability Modeling: Northern Segment Of The Edwards Aquifer, Texas, Ian C. Jones
Groundwater Availability Modeling: Northern Segment Of The Edwards Aquifer, Texas, Ian C. Jones
KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports
"The northern segment of the Edwards aquifer covers an area that includes some of the fastest growing counties in Texas. As a result of rapid population growth, demand for water in this region is also rising. A groundwater availability model simulating flow through this segment of the Edwards aquifer was constructed as a groundwater resource management tool. The purpose of this tool is to aid groundwater conservation districts, regional water planning groups, and others in evaluating groundwater resource management strategies to meet projected groundwater demands. This model was constructed by calibrating to steady-state conditions for 1980 and historical transient conditions …
Jollyville Salamander Data Analysis: 1997 – 2003, Martha Turner
Jollyville Salamander Data Analysis: 1997 – 2003, Martha Turner
KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports
The Jollyville Plateau salamander, Eurycea tonkawae, inhabits springs and spring-runs in tributaries draining the Jollyville Plateau area of Travis and Williamson counties, Texas. The species is considered a "species of concern" by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and as such, it may be in need of concentrated conservation actions. A previous 2-year study by the City of Austin provided baseline water chemistry, sediment chemistry, habitat, and ecological data at salamander sites. Examination of 6 years of data at five salamander sites shows that salamander counts are declining at two sites. The declining counts appear to be related to habitat …
