Kinetic Processes And Stable Isotopes In Cave Dripwaters As Indicators Of Winter Severity, Vasile Ersek, Bogdan P. Onac, Aurel Perșoiu Aug 2018

Kinetic Processes And Stable Isotopes In Cave Dripwaters As Indicators Of Winter Severity, Vasile Ersek, Bogdan P. Onac, Aurel Perșoiu

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

We examine how the stable isotope composition of meteoric water is transmitted through soil and epikarst to dripwaters in a cave in western Romania. δ2H and δ18O in precipitation at this site are influenced by temperature and moisture sources (Atlantic and Mediterranean), with lower δ18O in winter and higher in summer. The stable isotope composition of cave dripwaters mimics this seasonal pattern of low and high δ18O, but the onset and end of freezing conditions in the winter season are marked by sharp transitions in the isotopic signature of cave dripwaters of …

Submarine And Intertidal Groundwater Discharge Through A Complex Multi-Level Karst Conduit Aquifer, Philip Schuler, L. Duran, T. Mccormack Jul 2018

Submarine And Intertidal Groundwater Discharge Through A Complex Multi-Level Karst Conduit Aquifer, Philip Schuler, L. Duran, T. Mccormack

KIP Articles

The quantification of submarine and intertidal groundwater discharge (SiGD) or purely submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) from coastal karst aquifers presents a major challenge, as neither is directly measurable. In addition, the expected heterogeneity and intrinsic structure of such karst aquifers must be considered when quantifying SGD or SiGD. This study applies a set of methods for the coastal karst aquifer of Bell Harbour in western Ireland, using long-term onshore and offshore time series from a high-resolution monitoring network, to link catchment groundwater flow dynamics to groundwater discharge as SiGD. The SiGD is estimated using the “pollution flushing model”, i.e. a …

Hypogene Karst Of The Lampasas Cut Plain, Kevin W. Stafford, Stephen F, George Veni Jan 2018

Hypogene Karst Of The Lampasas Cut Plain, Kevin W. Stafford, Stephen F, George Veni

KIP Articles

Classically, epigene processes (unconfined and gravity driven from surface features) were considered the principal means by which caves and karst features were formed. In recent years, the theory of hypogene speleogenesis (confined and hydrostatic pressure driven, independent of adjacent surfaces) has gained both scientific and public support as a valid, and widespread mechanism for karst development in varied terrains. This has led to a revolution in thought related to karst processes and the broad implications of hypogene speleogenesis throughout North America, especially in Texas. As karst scientists and cavers began to view caves and karst processes in light of potential …

Microbial Function And Hydrochemistry Within A Stratified Anchialine Sinkhole: A Window Into Coastal Aquifer Interactions, Madison Davis, James R. Garey Jan 2018

Microbial Function And Hydrochemistry Within A Stratified Anchialine Sinkhole: A Window Into Coastal Aquifer Interactions, Madison Davis, James R. Garey

Molecular Biosciences Faculty Publications

Anchialine sinkholes provide insight into coastal aquifer systems and coastal mixing processes. Aquifer microbial community function is usually inferred from hydrochemical information, but there are few direct studies of microbial communities in the Floridan Aquifer. Hospital Hole is a 43 m-deep stratified sinkhole under the Weeki Wachee River, FL, with three distinct brackish layers: a hypoxic layer, a chemocline and a sulfidic anoxic layer. Illumina sequencing and bioinformatic tools were used to reconstruct metabolic functions and interactions of microbial communities in each layer. Each layer appears to originate from different parts of the coastal mixing zone and has a distinct …

U.S. Geological Survey Karst Interest Group Proceedings, San Antonio, Texas, May 16–18, 2017

KIP Articles

Karst aquifer systems are present throughout parts of the United States and some of its territories, and have developed in carbonate rocks (primarily limestone and dolomite) and evaporites (gypsum, anhydrite, and halite) that span an interval of time encompassing more than 550 million years. The depositional environments, diagenetic processes, post-depositional tectonic events, and geochemical weathering processes that form karst aquifers are varied and complex. These factors involve biological, chemical, and physical changes that when combined with the diverse climatic regimes in which karst development has taken place, result in the unique dual- or triple-porosity nature of karst aquifers. These complex …

The World Karst Aquifer Mapping Project: Concept, Mapping Procedure And Map Of Europe, Zhao Chen, Augusto S. Auler, Michel Bakalowicz

KIP Articles

Karst aquifers contribute substantially to freshwater supplies in many regions of the world, but are vulnerable to contamination and difficult to manage because of their unique hydrogeological characteristics. Many karst systems are hydraulically connected over wide areas and require transboundary exploration, protection and management. In order to obtain a better global overview of karst aquifers, to create a basis for sustainable international water-resources management, and to increase the awareness in the public and among decision makers, the World Karst Aquifer Mapping (WOKAM) project was established. The goal is to create a world map and database of karst aquifers, as a …

A Recharge-Discharge Water Budget And Evaluation Of Water Budgets For The Edwards Aquifer Associated With Barton Springs, Raymond M. Slade Jan 2017

A Recharge-Discharge Water Budget And Evaluation Of Water Budgets For The Edwards Aquifer Associated With Barton Springs, Raymond M. Slade

KIP Articles

The Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer represents a small, relatively independent part of the aquifer. Data for the sources of recharge and especially for discharge from the aquifer are well documented. Based on a 6-year water budget of surface recharge and surface discharge, the volumes match within 5%, which is within the potential error limits of the recharge and discharge values. Recharge volumes include increased runoff due to urbanization in the recharge area. A previous water budget based on an earlier period also displayed a balance between recharge and discharge volumes. Both budgets are based on slightly “wetter” …

Origin Of An Extensive Network Of Non-Tectonic Synclines In Eocene Limestones Of The Western Desert, Egypt, Barbara J. Tewksbury, Elbamy Tarabees, Charlotte J. Mehrtens Jan 2017

Origin Of An Extensive Network Of Non-Tectonic Synclines In Eocene Limestones Of The Western Desert, Egypt, Barbara J. Tewksbury, Elbamy Tarabees, Charlotte J. Mehrtens

KIP Articles

Satellite images of the Western Desert of Egypt display conspicuous sinuous color patterning that previous workers have interpreted as erosional flutes formed by catastrophic flooding. Our work with high resolution satellite imagery shows that the patterning is not erosional but, rather, the result of a network of thousands of narrow synclines in the Eocene bedrock capping the Limestone Plateau. Synclines form as isolated, 200-400 meter-wide downwarps in otherwise flat-lying strata. Limb dips are shallow, and doubly plunging hinges form multiple basin closures along syncline lengths. Anticlines form “accidentally” in inter-syncline areas where two adjacent synclines lie close together. Synclines have …
