Almost Difference Sets And Reversible Divisible Difference Sets, James A. Davis
Almost Difference Sets And Reversible Divisible Difference Sets, James A. Davis
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
Let G be a group of order mn and N a subgroup of G of order n. If D is a k-subset of G, then D is called a (m, n, k, λ1, λ2) divisible difference set (DDS) provided that the differences dd'-1 for d, d' ∈ D, d ≠ d' contain every nonidentity element of N exactly λ1 times and every element of G - N exactly λ2 times. Difference sets are used to generate designs, as described by [4] and [9]. D will be …

Learning Styles Of Students And Instructors: An Analysis Of Course Performance And Satisfaction, Marshall A. Geiger, Edmund J. Boyle
Learning Styles Of Students And Instructors: An Analysis Of Course Performance And Satisfaction, Marshall A. Geiger, Edmund J. Boyle
Accounting Faculty Publications
Accounting educators have utilized Kolb's Learning Style Inventory (LSI) in the assessment of accounting students and the accounting curriculum. This study extends these earlier works by examining the effect of student and instructor learning style, as measured by the revised 1985 LSI, on introductory course performance and ratings of satisfaction with both the course and the instructor.
The results indicate no significant effect of student/teacher learning style interaction on final course grade or students' ratings of satisfaction. However, instructors having a convergent learning style were given significantly higher satisfaction ratings regardless of student learning style.

Time As A Shared Resource : The Effects Of Depression And Behavior Verifiability On Perceptions Of Temporal Investment, Jody Lynn Jones
Time As A Shared Resource : The Effects Of Depression And Behavior Verifiability On Perceptions Of Temporal Investment, Jody Lynn Jones
Master's Theses
People have a tendency to view themselves in a more favorable light than they do others, a phenomenon termed the egocentric bias (Messick, Bloom, Boldizar, & Samuelson, 1985). Past research has shown that people are more likely to display the bias in situations that are "nonverifiable", meaning that there is no way to accurately measure the dimension on which judgments are made (Allison, Messick, & Goethals, 1989). Two experiments tested the hypothesis that only nondepressed individuals in a nonverifiable situation would show the egocentric bias, whereas non depressed subjects in the verifiable condition and depressed subjects in both conditions would …
Walking Percy's Tightrope : From Alienation To Affirmation, Karen Y. Carter
Walking Percy's Tightrope : From Alienation To Affirmation, Karen Y. Carter
Master's Theses
Walker Percy's Binx Bolling, of The Moviegoer, and Will Barrett, of The Last Gentleman and The Second Coming, are two Southern existential seekers who move from alienation and despair to create lives of meaningful commitment with the promise of fulfillment. Because of their similarities, we can trace a development in Percy's fiction which parallels the questor's development. These three books move from a preoccupation with death-in-life to a discovery of self and on to individual and cultural rebirth. Thus, The Moviegoer (1960) is about alienation and despair; The Last Gentleman (1966) is about the possibility of human relationships, …

Relations Among Perspective Taking, Egocentrism, And Self-Esteem In Late Adolescents, Kimberly D. Leister
Relations Among Perspective Taking, Egocentrism, And Self-Esteem In Late Adolescents, Kimberly D. Leister
Master's Theses
This study examined the relations among perspective taking, egocentrism, and self-esteem in a sample of 113 undergraduate college students. Self-report measures of the the three constructs were used. Subjects in different levels of perspective taking did not differ significantly from one another in either egocentrism or self-esteem. Pearson correlations revealed that egocentrism was not related to self-esteem in level 2 perspective takers, but that these two constructs were negatively related in 3 perspective takers. Additionally, when subjects were in level 2 perspective taking, feedback did not alter their perceptions of themselves. However, when in level 3, feedback did affect subjects' …

The Preclusive Effect Of Unemployment Compensation Determinations In Subsequent Litigation: A Federal Solution, Ann C. Hodges
The Preclusive Effect Of Unemployment Compensation Determinations In Subsequent Litigation: A Federal Solution, Ann C. Hodges
Law Faculty Publications
This article examines the use of the doctrine of collateral estoppel to preclude litigation of statutory and common law actions challenging employee discharge based on determinations in unemployment compensation proceedings. First, the article reviews the history of the doctrine of collateral estoppel and examines the policies underlying its application. Next, the article reviews unemployment compensation law and analyzes the cases that have considered whether unemployment compensation determinations have preclusive effect in later litigation. After examining the existing law, the article engages in a comparative analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of according preclusive effect to unemployment compensation determinations, in light …
A Road Less Traveled To A Federal Era, John Paul Jones
A Road Less Traveled To A Federal Era, John Paul Jones
Law Faculty Publications
Professor Jones examines efforts to ratify the federal Equal Rights Amendment which ended unsuccessfully in 1982. He argues that efforts to use the federal courts to fill in the gaps in protection of rights based on gender are likely to fall far short of what the Amendment would have provided, and that a renewed attempt at ratification would likely meet the same fate as the earlier one. He suggests a third alternative, U.S. ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, as the most feasible means of achieving the goals of the ERA without …
Netsim: A Network Performance Simulator, Lewis Barnett Iii
Netsim: A Network Performance Simulator, Lewis Barnett Iii
Department of Math & Statistics Technical Report Series
The performance of computer communication networks is often given only cursory treatment in undergraduate Networking or Computer Communication courses. A simulation package for the investigation of many aspects of Local Area Network (LAN) performance is introduced. Its use as a tool for allowing undergraduate Networking students to investigate the performance of a popular networking system is discussed.
Construction Of Relative Difference Sets In P-Groups, James A. Davis
Construction Of Relative Difference Sets In P-Groups, James A. Davis
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
Jungnickel (1982) and Elliot and Butson (1966) have shown that (pj+1,p,pj+1,pj) relative difference sets exist in the elementary abelian p-group case (p an odd prime) and many 2-groups for the case p = 2. This paper provides two new constructions of relative difference sets with these parameters; the first handles any p-group (including non-abelian) with a special subgroup if j is odd, and any 2-group with that subgroup if j is even. The second construction shows that if j is odd, every abelian group …
What Are The Costs Of Disinflation?, Dean D. Croushore
What Are The Costs Of Disinflation?, Dean D. Croushore
Economics Faculty Publications
The Federal Reserve can use monetary policy to reduce the inflation rate, a process known as disinflation. Are the benefits of disinflation worth the costs? Proponents of disinflation argue that the long-run benefits of price stability, including lower interest rates, increased economic efficiency, and perhaps faster economic growth, greatly exceed the short-run costs. Opponents, of course, claim the opposite, usually arguing that the short-run costs in terms of higher unemployment and lost output would be immense.
Virginia Annexations As Metropolitan Reform Movements : Are They Obsolete?, Demetra Yeapanis Kontos
Virginia Annexations As Metropolitan Reform Movements : Are They Obsolete?, Demetra Yeapanis Kontos
Master's Theses
The proliferation of local governments and single-purpose regional governmental districts has given local and state government administrators throughout the country many problems. The multiplicity of governments exacerbates conflicts of authority, duplication of services, inadequate service levels, and many other problems. Three basic metropolitan reforms have been implemented to solve these problems: consolidation, disintegration and regional organization. Each of these types of reform has been implemented in Virginia. The most controversial of these reforms is annexation, a form of consolidation where an independent city annexes county land. What contributes to the controversy of annexation movements is that unlike most states, Virginia's …
Churches, Church Development Agencies And American Foreign Policy In Nicaragua : A Case Study, Michael Thomas Kuchinsky
Churches, Church Development Agencies And American Foreign Policy In Nicaragua : A Case Study, Michael Thomas Kuchinsky
Master's Theses
Churches and church agencies have always been involved in American public and political life. These involvements exhibited cooperation and common interest. An example of this includes the combined efforts to help European refugees following World War II.
Since then, churches have challenged their partnership with government. Sensitivity to Third World issues, theologies of liberation, ideologies of oppression, and the values malaise brought on by the Vietnam War separated some interests of American churches and their government. What would churches do when confronted with an American foreign policy they considered immoral and oppressive?
The hypotheses of Robert Sullivan and Jorgen Lissner …
Chinese Foreign Policy In Changing Perspective--A Case Study Of The Three World Doctrine, Guojun Xu
Chinese Foreign Policy In Changing Perspective--A Case Study Of The Three World Doctrine, Guojun Xu
Master's Theses
China has in recent years embarked on a fresh policy of close cooperation with her former antagonists, the Western countries, not only in economic areas, but also on social, military and political issues. Does this mean that China has given up her highly publicized third world position? Or did China ever genuinely belong with the third world in the past? These questions are explored in the thesis through careful analyses of the origins of China's foreign policies as well as comparative observations of their applications to different countries at different stages. Rather than isolating individual variables, as some writers do, …
