This study explored the relationship between companion animal attachment and adolescent loneliness. Self report measures of loneliness (Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale), companion animal attachment (Companion Animal Bonding Scale), and social support (Social Support Questionnaire Revised Short Form) were completed by 293 adolescents from two ethnically diverse southwest rural high schools. Pet information included the type of favored pet, length of pet relationship, the number of household pets, and how the participants described their pet relationship. Participants also provided basic demographic data about themselves and their pets. Descriptive statistics, standard multiple regressions, t-tests, and ANOVAs were employed to examine relationships among …

The Impact Of American Movies On Egyptian Cinema In 1950s And 1960s, Radi Abouelhassan Sep 2009

The Impact Of American Movies On Egyptian Cinema In 1950s And 1960s, Radi Abouelhassan

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The 1952 military coup in Egypt constituted the beginning of a new era in Egypts history and pushed forward substantial societal, economic and political changes. These changes represent the fruits of the revolutionary regime's pro-modernization ideology. In their search for modernity, the Egyptian elite invested in cinema as well as other forms of media and tended to follow the models of western countries. The strong relation between the Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser and the US, as well as the dominance of the American movies shown Egypt compared to other foreign cinematic industries at that time, directed the Egyptian elite …

High-Speed Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration For Field Programmable Gate Arrays, John Hoffman Aug 2009

High-Speed Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration For Field Programmable Gate Arrays, John Hoffman

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

With dynamically and partially reconfigurable designs, it is necessary that the speed of the reconfiguration be accomplished in a time that is sufficiently small such that the operation of reconfiguration is not the limiting factor in the process. Therefore, the communication between the source of configuration and the configurable unit must be made as fast as possible. The aim of this work is to use an embedded controller internal to the FPGA to control the reconfiguration process and obtain the maximum speed at which reconfiguration can occur, with current FPGA technology. The use of Direct Memory Access (DMA) driven operations …

Positional Accuracy Of The Wide Area Augmentation System, Lisa L. Arnold Aug 2009

Positional Accuracy Of The Wide Area Augmentation System, Lisa L. Arnold

Geography ETDs

Global Positioning Systems devices are increasingly being used for data collection in many fields. Consumer-grade GPS units without differential correction have a published horizontal accuracy of approximately 10 to 15 meters (average error). An attractive option for differential correction for these GPS units is the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). Most consumer-grade GPS units on the market are WAAS capable. According to the FAA, the WAAS broadcast message provides integrity information about the GPS signal as well as accuracy improvements which are reported to improve accuracy to 3 to 5 meters. However, limited empirical evidence has been published on the …

Assessing The Effects Of New Public Transportation Routes : An Equity Analysis On The Changing Accessibility Of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Calvin Tribby

Geography ETDs

This research details the application of a public transportation accessibility model using travel time as the accessibility measure. The primary objective was to develop a multi-modal network model for detecting change in travel time at the household level as the result of the implementation of new rapid bus routes. This method is situated in the accessibility measures of transportation equity, a focus of research in the broader field of transportation geography. The level of detail that current accessibility studies use to evaluate public transit are not detailed enough to capture travel time changes at the household level and through varying …

The Mathematics Of The Epicycloid : A Historical Journey With A Modern Perspective, Precious Andrew Aug 2009

The Mathematics Of The Epicycloid : A Historical Journey With A Modern Perspective, Precious Andrew

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

The role of the epicycloid in both historical and mathematical contexts was studied through readings and research. Throughout history, circles have been considered perfect and thus very important shapes. Because epicycloids are constructed by combining circular motions, their historical value is evident. Epicycloids are traced through history, with special emphasis on their use in astronomy. The epicycloid is also important from a purely mathematical perspective. The connection of the figure with Fourier series is analyzed and illustrated with various Matlab plots. Because of this connection, the power of the epicycloid as a modeling tool becomes clear. The epicycloid has also …

Shock Formation Properties Of Continuum And Kinetic Models, Pavlo Cherepanov Aug 2009

Shock Formation Properties Of Continuum And Kinetic Models, Pavlo Cherepanov

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Continuum mechanics and kinetic theory are two mathematical theories with fundamentally different approaches to the same physical phenomenon. Continuum mechanics together with thermodynamics treat a substance (a gas or a fluid) as a continuous medium and describes the evolution of its macro characteristics via application of the conservation laws to small packets of the substance. Kinetic theory attempts to describe the evolution of the macro parameters by treating a substance as a family of colliding objects. The number of objects must be large enough so a statistical approach can be taken. In this work we introduce a numerical scheme to …

Using Control Charts For Computer-Aided Diagnosis Of Brain Images, Sumner Williams Iv Aug 2009

Using Control Charts For Computer-Aided Diagnosis Of Brain Images, Sumner Williams Iv

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

We consider a novel application of quality control charts to brain scans performed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although our primary focus is on volume measures resulting from brain scans, issues related to the MRI scanner are also considered. The project evaluates a population of healthy control subjects using control charts to assess the MRIs obtained for the subjects. The results demonstrate our ability to automatically detect brain volumes that are statistical outliers, and can provide a potential cost savings of 10% for a moderately sized study. More importantly, our applied results will increase the sensitivity of tests from comparisons …

The Welfare Effects Of International Remittance Income, Michael Milligan Aug 2009

The Welfare Effects Of International Remittance Income, Michael Milligan

Economics ETDs

This dissertation explores the welfare effects of international remittance income, i.e., income earned by migrant workers and sent back to their home country. Remittance income has increased markedly in the last decade, particularly in the developing world. The primary purpose of this dissertation is to quantify the effects of this income on recipient countries. Chapter 2 of this dissertation presents a study of how remittance income affects child welfare in Nepal using the 2003/2004 Nepal Living Standards survey. I examine how remittance income and non-remittance income affect child labor and child education. Specifically, I examine the probability that a child …

The Economics Of Urban Water Policy : Infrastructure, Scarcity, And Conservation, Jason Hansen Aug 2009

The Economics Of Urban Water Policy : Infrastructure, Scarcity, And Conservation, Jason Hansen

Economics ETDs

This research focuses on urban water policy. The three papers extend the literature through economic application, taking theory in a direction that informs water resource managers on optimal decision-making or a better approach to management. Three primary results are: first, that the optimal infrastructure investment path is impacted by existing capital stock, water policy, and the size of the customer base served. Second, optimally managed, optimally priced urban groundwater mitigates aquifer drawdown and generates excess revenue that may be used for capital investment. Third, to achieve water conservation through non-price methods, managers should use a neighborhood, community-organized approach. Water systems …

Consumer Willingness To Pay For Water Conservation In The Framework Of Renewable Energy Projects, Amber Riter Aug 2009

Consumer Willingness To Pay For Water Conservation In The Framework Of Renewable Energy Projects, Amber Riter

Economics ETDs

This research focuses on consumer valuation of the benefits associated with renewable electricity generation, specifically for water conservation. Previous contingent valuation studies in this area conclude that consumers are willing to pay for these benefits, but do not explicitly consider the environmental benefit of water conservation. The impact of this benefit is tested for a unique sample of New Mexican consumers by performing a split-sample study with a treatment variation in the benefit related information given to the respondent. The study is performed using the Internet survey mode for a sample population of 2000 University and University Hospital Staff. A …

The prevalence of unhealthy habits and behaviors is undeniably felt and seen here in United States. Smoking and obesity are the two leading preventable causes of death today. The economic and societal costs are too high for such a preventable problem. The associated diseases and illnesses that stem from them account for billions of dollars in medical expenditures as well as billions more in lost productivity. This paper explores the degree to which people in different groups account for poor health habits on their health status. Using data from the National Health Interview Survey, the self reported health status was …

Park Amenities And Crime: Do Neighborhood Parks Contribute To Crime?, Elizabeth Cota Aug 2009

Park Amenities And Crime: Do Neighborhood Parks Contribute To Crime?, Elizabeth Cota

Economics ETDs

Municipal parks are often assumed to be associated with crime, but if parks do foster crime, the specific relationships are unclear. Park data were collected for a national and a city sample, recognizing four typical amenities in parks: sports, family, ornamental, and undeveloped. These four variables were regressed on eight different categories of crime for both samples. Percent male, percent aged fifteen to twenty-four, and percent white were used as control variables. Given the expected signs on the control variables, the city sample provided more likely results. In that sample, parks with sports, family, and ornamental amenities were associated with …

Toward A Visual Paideia: Visual Rhetoric In Undergraduate Writing Programs, Candice Welhausen Aug 2009

Toward A Visual Paideia: Visual Rhetoric In Undergraduate Writing Programs, Candice Welhausen

English Language and Literature ETDs

New media and digital texts of the twenty-first century are generally characterized as rich and dynamic combinations of verbal, visual, and aural elements. Instruction in visual rhetoric in the writing classroom, however, has tended to focus on analysis with far less emphasis on teaching students how to produce multimodal texts. Drawing upon classical rhetorical theory, I propose the development of a visual paideia grounded in the educational goals of the Greco-Roman paideia to incorporate richly balanced instruction in both analysis and production of visual-dominant texts. I approach the development of a visual paideia via examining the current state of visual …

The Development Of Nanofluidic Platforms For Biomolecular Separations, Anthony Garcia Aug 2009

The Development Of Nanofluidic Platforms For Biomolecular Separations, Anthony Garcia

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Recently the extrication and purification of important biomolecules, especially proteins, has been a topic of great interest. Common systems used in the purification and extraction of these important biological molecules includes gel electrophoresis, various forms of chromatography, and capillary electrophoresis type devices. These systems, while achieving a good amount of success, each possess inherent properties that can be improved upon. They usually necessitate comparatively large laboratory footprints, require high voltages to operate (in the tens of kilovolts), and call for relatively large sample sizes in order to perform these tasks. All of these shortcomings can be addressed by performing these …

The Relationship Between Procurment Duration And Design-Build Success In Transportation Projects, Ao Chen Aug 2009

The Relationship Between Procurment Duration And Design-Build Success In Transportation Projects, Ao Chen

Civil Engineering ETDs

State Departments of Transportation (DOTs)are increasingly interested in developing new strategies for the design and construction of transportation projects. As a result, they are adopting more integrated process. Projects that previously used separate steps and parties may now be included in a single Design-Build system. When making a decision between a traditional Design-Bid-Build delivery system or a more integrated project delivery system like Design-Build, the DOTs consider potential more cost savings, time savings, and quality improvement. In order to maximize success in Design-Build project delivery, state DOTs need to pay attention to the initial steps, like procurement. DOTs should prepare …

An Aqueous Geochemical And Hydrologic Study Of The Springs And Wells Of The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge : Evaluating Hydrochemical Pathways, Amy Williams Aug 2009

An Aqueous Geochemical And Hydrologic Study Of The Springs And Wells Of The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge : Evaluating Hydrochemical Pathways, Amy Williams

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Rio Grande is a regionally important water source, but the smaller rift springs are also a vital resource for livestock and wildlife. Several springs are located on rift-bounding faults and exhibit a mixing of larger volume meteoric recharge with small volume, chemically potent "endogenic" fluids. It has been hypothesized that deep-seated faults within the rift provide conduits for the ascent of deeply derived fluids, possibly from the lithospheric/asthenospheric mantle, while others have proposed that upwelling sedimentary basin brines at interbasin constrictions represent a significant salinity input to the modern Rio Grande. This study (a) provides the first hydrochemical data …

Novel Method For Carbon Nanofilament Growth On Carbon Fibers, Daniel Garcia Aug 2009

Novel Method For Carbon Nanofilament Growth On Carbon Fibers, Daniel Garcia

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Carbon nanofilaments were grown on the surface of microscale carbon-fibers at relatively low temperature using palladium as a catalyst to create multiscale fiber reinforcing structures with potential applications in structural composites. Employing a relatively new method, in which carbon structures are grown from fuel rich combustion mixtures on certain catalytic metals, multiscale filament structures were grown from ethylene/oxygen mixtures at 550 °C on commercial PAN and pitch carbon fibers. The filaments grew in a bimodal size distribution. Relative short, densely spaced nanofilaments (ca. 10 nm diameter), and a slightly less dense layer of larger (ca. 100 nm diameter) faster growing …

Friend, Foe, Or Other? Monsters And Identity On The Odyssean Sea, Daniel Bellum Aug 2009

Friend, Foe, Or Other? Monsters And Identity On The Odyssean Sea, Daniel Bellum

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The sea upon which Odysseus wanders in Homer's Odyssey is a chaotic and unpredictable place, empty of historical non-Greek cultures, but full of sea creatures, monsters, and deities eager to ensnare and devour the long-suffering hero. However, the Mediterranean of the Archaic Age that produced the Odyssey was a well-charted sea, where Greeks frequently interacted with foreigners. This thesis approaches the sea in the Odyssey as a mythic borderland, a medium for conceptualized representations of actual intercultural exchanges between archaic Greeks and other cultures of the ancient Mediterranean. Further, using postcolonial theory, this study attempts to understand how the various …

Quantum Control Of D-Dimensional Quantum Systems With Application To Alkali Atomic Spins, Seth Merkel Aug 2009

Quantum Control Of D-Dimensional Quantum Systems With Application To Alkali Atomic Spins, Seth Merkel

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

In this dissertation I analyze Hamiltonian control of d-dimensional quantum systems as realized in alkali atomic spins. Alkali atoms provide an ideal platform for studies of quantum control due to the extreme precision with which the control fields are characterized as well as their isolation from their environment. In many cases, studies into the control of atomic spins restrict attention to a 2-dimesional subspace in order to consider qubit control. The geometry of quantum 2-level systems is much simpler than for any larger dimensional Hilbert space, and so control techniques for qubits often are not applicable to larger systems. In …

The Lexical Decision Task And Implicit Alcohol Cognitions : A Better Measure For Predicting Alcohol Use In Women?, Marita Campos-Melady Aug 2009

The Lexical Decision Task And Implicit Alcohol Cognitions : A Better Measure For Predicting Alcohol Use In Women?, Marita Campos-Melady

Psychology ETDs

Research on the etiology of alcohol use disorders has focused increasingly on how the beliefs people have about alcohol influence their motivation to drink. Implicit alcohol expectancies, or beliefs about alcohol which exist outside of conscious awareness in the form of memory associations, are thought to uniquely affect drinking behavior. Research also has indicated that there may be a distinctive relationship between negative reinforcement and alcohol use in women. However, the most common measures used to examine implicit alcohol cognitions may be insufficient to examine associations involving negative reinforcement. The current study utilized the Lexical Decision Task (LDT) to examine …

Analysis Of Moment-Preserving Methods For Charged Particle Transport, Paul Smith Aug 2009

Analysis Of Moment-Preserving Methods For Charged Particle Transport, Paul Smith

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

The simulation of electrons, protons, and other charged particles can be an expensive computation. On the one hand, the small mean free path of a charged particle makes direct simulations very costly. On the other hand, the cross sections are very singular making a deterministic calculation difficult to impossible. Nevertheless, the accurate computation of high energy charged particle densities is an important task for many engineering calculations. In this thesis, a variety of methods for computing these densities and distributions are assessed. Among these methods are the well-known Fokker-Planck and Fermi approximations. These methods are known to be particularly bad …

Control And Filtering Of Time-Varying Linear Systems Via Parameter Dependent Lyapunov Functions, Renato Alves Borges Aug 2009

Control And Filtering Of Time-Varying Linear Systems Via Parameter Dependent Lyapunov Functions, Renato Alves Borges

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The main contribution of this dissertation is to propose conditions for linear filter and controller design, considering both robust and parameter dependent structures, for discrete time-varying systems. The controllers, or filters, are obtained through the solution of optimization problems, formulated in terms of bilinear matrix inequalities, using a method that alternates convex optimization problems described in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Both affine and multi-affine in different instants of time (path dependent) Lyapunov functions were used to obtain the design conditions, as well as extra variables introduced by the Finsler's lemma. Design problems that take into account an H-infinity guaranteed …

Optimal Spectral Reconstructions From Deterministic And Stochastic Sampling Geometries Using Compressive Sensing And Spectral Statistical Models, Oliver Jeromin Aug 2009

Optimal Spectral Reconstructions From Deterministic And Stochastic Sampling Geometries Using Compressive Sensing And Spectral Statistical Models, Oliver Jeromin

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This dissertation focuses on the development of high-quality image reconstruction methods from a limited number of Fourier samples using optimized, stochastic and deterministic sampling geometries. Two methodologies are developed: an optimal image reconstruction framework based on Compressive Sensing (CS) techniques and a new, Spectral Statistical approach based on the use of isotropic models over a dyadic partitioning of the spectrum. The proposed methods are demonstrated in applications in reconstructing fMRI and remote sensing imagery. Typically, a reduction in MRI image acquisition time is achieved by sampling K-space at a rate below the Nyquist rate. Various methods using correlation between samples, …

Studies Of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays, John Douglas Hague Aug 2009

Studies Of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays, John Douglas Hague

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

In this thesis, analysis tools for understanding the observed spectrum and arrival directions of ultra high energy cosmic rays are developed and applied to both simulated and observed data. Two separate statistical tests are applied to the AGASA and preliminary Auger Cosmic Ray Energy spectra in an attempt to find deviation from a pure power-law. The first test is constructed from the probability distribution for the maximum event of a sample drawn from a power-law. The second employs the TP-statistic, a function defined to deviate from zero when the sample deviates from the power-law form, regardless of the value of …
