Fault-Tolerance Embedding Of Rings And Arrays In Star And Pancake Graphs, Ramesh Reddy Gajjala Jan 1995

Fault-Tolerance Embedding Of Rings And Arrays In Star And Pancake Graphs, Ramesh Reddy Gajjala

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The star and pancake graphs are useful interconnection networks for connecting processors in a parallel and distributed computing environment. The star network has been widely studied and is shown to possess attactive features like sublogarithmic diameter, node and edge symmetry and high resilience. The star/pancake interconnection graphs, {dollar}S\sb{n}/P\sb{n}{dollar} of dimension n have n! nodes connected by {dollar}{(n-1).n!\over2}{dollar} edges. Due to their large number of nodes and interconnections, they are prone to failure of one or more nodes/edges; In this thesis, we present methods to embed Hamiltonian paths (H-path) and Hamiltonian cycles (H-cycle) in a star graph {dollar}S\sb{n}{dollar} and pancake graph …

Travel Demand Modeling For Developing Countries, Satyakala Jarugumilli Jan 1995

Travel Demand Modeling For Developing Countries, Satyakala Jarugumilli

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The transportation planning process or travel demand forecasting process which is most commonly used at present, called the Urban Transportation Planning Process (UTPP), has its origins in studies performed about three decades ago in urban areas in the United States. This conventional planning process was designed primarily for the western/developed world where affordability and accessibility to a personal automobile is a common feature; The UTPP based models used in forecasting future travel demand rely heavily on socio-economic variables that are associated with an individual's propensity to travel. The socio-economic environments in the developing and the under-developed world are different from …

A Classification Of Groups Satisfying The Converse Of Lagrange's Theorem, Laura Earl Laurent Jan 1995

A Classification Of Groups Satisfying The Converse Of Lagrange's Theorem, Laura Earl Laurent

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This paper is a classification of finite groups satisfying the converse of Lagrange's Theorem. We begin by showing a series of inclusions of classes of finite groups: p-groups {dollar}\subseteq{dollar} nilpotent {dollar}\subseteq{dollar} supersolvable {dollar}\subseteq{dollar} polycyclic {dollar}\subseteq{dollar} solvable. The crucial point of the paper consists of the proof that the class of supersolvable groups is contained in the class of converse Lagrange groups while the class of polycyclic groups is not. We also show that finite cyclic groups and finite abelian groups are included in the class of converse Lagrange groups. Finally, we give an example to show that the class of …

A Gradient Analysis Of Coleogyne Communities In Southern Nevada, Simon Adams Lei Jan 1995

A Gradient Analysis Of Coleogyne Communities In Southern Nevada, Simon Adams Lei

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Species richness, density, and abundance in Coleogyne ramosissima (blackbrush) shrublands were compared on 15 elevational transects in the Spring and Sheep Mountain Ranges adjacent to the Las Vegas Valley. Coleogyne shrublands shared relatively broad upper and lower ecotones with Pinus-Juniperus and Larrea-Ambrosia vegetation, respectively. Lower Coleogyne ecotones generally had the highest species richness, and Pinus-Juniperus woodlands had the lowest species richness; Detrended correspondence analysis (DECORANA) suggested that elevation and soil depth were significantly associated with the distribution of stand and species groups identified from two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) in the Spring and Sheep Mountain Ranges. Precipitation and soil moisture …

Determination Of Soluble Mineral Content In Las Vegas Soils, Mark Alan Leonard Jan 1995

Determination Of Soluble Mineral Content In Las Vegas Soils, Mark Alan Leonard

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Lower basin areas in the Las Vegas Valley contain soils with large amounts of soluble minerals. Dissolving and leaching processes due to water intrusion into foundation soils containing soluble minerals can cause a volume reduction of the soil which in turn causes structural stress. Soil improvement recommendations for soluble soils are based upon the amount of soluble minerals of a parent soil. This study reports the results of research to develop a correlation between the electrical conductivity and the concentration of soluble minerals in aqueous soil extracts. Correlations were developed by measuring the total dissolved solids and conductance of aqueous …

Comparative Study Of Advanced Heat Pumps, Craig M Moiola Jan 1995

Goldwater was an ardent Cold Warrior, who had developed staunch convictions on domestic and foreign matters. As a senator, his unwavering conservatism cast him as a "maverick" among other Republicans; however, …

New Methods In Image Compression Using Multi-Level Transforms And Adaptive Statistical Encoding, Thomas William Pike Jan 1995

New Methods In Image Compression Using Multi-Level Transforms And Adaptive Statistical Encoding, Thomas William Pike

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The need to meet the demand for high quality digital images, with comparatively modest storage requirements, is driving the development of new image compression techniques. This demand has spurred new techniques based on time to frequency spatial transformation methods. At the core of these methods are a family of transformations built on basis sets called "wavelets." The wavelet transform permits an image to be represented in a substantially reduced space by transferring the energy of the image to a smaller set of coefficients. Although these techniques are lossy as the compression ratio rises, very adequate reconstructions can be made from …

High Frequency Surface Estimation, Sai Prasad V Pallati Jan 1995

High Frequency Surface Estimation, Sai Prasad V Pallati

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Mountain generation can be considered a part of the general theory of surface estimation; In this thesis, two methods have been presented to generate fractals--fast Fourier method and a new generalized stochastic subdivision method. Also, a new surface estimation method has been introduced that deals with points of unequal powers. The uniqueness of this method is the usage of splines to calculate the arc lengths between the points, as opposed to Euclidean distances used in Kriging. The fast Fourier technique has been used to generate mountains in particular; also, some extensions have been suggested, whereby different sets of mountains can …

Adoption Anxiety Among Prospective Adoptive Parents, Stephanie A Robinson Jan 1995

Adoption Anxiety Among Prospective Adoptive Parents, Stephanie A Robinson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Adoption has existed for thousands of years. Originally, the process was closed, i.e., the natural and the adopting parents did not have direct contact with one another. They remained anonymous. Recently, the process has opened up to include an open adoption, i.e., the natural and adopting parents meet each other before the adoption process is completed and they maintain contact with each other thereafter. This has created some anxiety among the prospective adoptive parents regarding the possibility that their contact with the birth mother may somehow create a problem or spoil a successful adoption from taking place. Anxiety surrounding this …

An Integrated Systems Methodology For Pedestrian Traffic Flow Analysis, Richard Thomas Romer Jan 1995

An Integrated Systems Methodology For Pedestrian Traffic Flow Analysis, Richard Thomas Romer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The typical urban pedestrian transportation system involves three basic elements: sidewalks or walkways; midblock or intersection corner, holding, or queueing areas; and pedestrian crossings of roads, rail lines, or other physical features. The pedestrians on sidewalks or walkways have operating characteristics analogous to motorized vehicles on roadways. Each critical pedestrian element has been considered individually, but not as a balanced system, especially at the most critical link--the signalized urban intersection; In this research, a methodology and guidelines have been developed to analyze existing pedestrian elements at a signalized intersection, i.e., the sidewalk, intersection corner, and crosswalk; with a systems approach …

The following discussion will present SPT correlations, based on field test data, for consistency, cohesion and the internal angle of friction, specifically for the Las Vegas Valley. The Las Vegas soil correlations are compared to general soil correlations; Sampling methods other than the Standard Penetration Test are used to estimate soil characteristics. The SPT uses …

A Modern Synthesis Of Faith And Reason, Ralph Wm Thomas Jan 1995

A Modern Synthesis Of Faith And Reason, Ralph Wm Thomas

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Today, modern man is uneasy. The current outcry for ethics in government and in social life reflects a need which has not been met. What distinguishes man as a rational and creative human being are his moral, abstract, artistic, creative, and spiritual ideas. In many instances, such ideas have been declared as meaningless by the 'reasoning' of the natural sciences; This thesis will develop a modern paradigm that will synthesize subjective values coming from the 'faith' side of rational beings with the objective values obtained from their objective (abstract reasoning) side of themselves; The paradigm will be illustrated by applying …
