Remediation And The Task Of The Translator In The Digital Age Digitally Translating Simone Schwarz-Bart's Pluie Et Vent Sur Telumee Miracle, Stacey Lynn Diliberto
Remediation And The Task Of The Translator In The Digital Age Digitally Translating Simone Schwarz-Bart's Pluie Et Vent Sur Telumee Miracle, Stacey Lynn Diliberto
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this qualitative study, I examine the utilization of electronic publication and electronic writing systems to provide new possibilities for the translation of French Caribbean literary texts. Using Simone Schwarz‐Bart's 1972 novel Pluie et vent sur Télumée Miracle specifically for analysis and exploration, I investigate the potential of digital technology to aid in the production of literary translations that are mindful not only of the dynamics of language, but of French Caribbean women's discourse as well. Since the cultural turn of translation studies, translators need not only be bilingual but bicultural as well, having a discerning knowledge and familiarity of …
Healthy Aging And Self-Objectification The Impact Of Empowerment And Feminist Attitudes On Body Image, Eating Behavior, And Aging Satisfaction, Karen P. Grippo
Healthy Aging And Self-Objectification The Impact Of Empowerment And Feminist Attitudes On Body Image, Eating Behavior, And Aging Satisfaction, Karen P. Grippo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to contribute to women’s healthy aging across the adult lifespan by empirically examining potential protective factors (e.g., empowerment and feminist attitudes) in maintaining positive body image, healthy eating behavior, and aging satisfaction. Objectification Theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997) provided a theoretical framework for understanding the connections between sexual-objectification experiences, media influences, and self-objectification, and the resulting negative psychological consequences for women in Western society. This study was the first to examine empowerment in relation to Objectification Theory. Additionally, a developmental perspective was gained by using a diverse sample of young, middle-aged, and older women …
A Comparison Of College Students' Perceptions Of Older Tattooed Women And Younger Tattooed Women, Laura Raymond
A Comparison Of College Students' Perceptions Of Older Tattooed Women And Younger Tattooed Women, Laura Raymond
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study examined how college students perceive older versus younger women based on their tattoo status (i.e., no tattoo, feminine tattoo, or masculine tattoo). A randomly assigned sample of 376 responded to a survey involving a 2 X 3 experiment designed to assess the impact of age (older versus younger) and tattoo status on four dependent measures: credibility, promiscuity, and attractiveness. Results indicate that older and younger women are perceived differently depending on their tattoo status. Not wearing a tattoo may lead to a more favorable perception of older women than wearing one, but wearing a feminine tattoo may engender …
Innovation On A Budget The Development Of Military Technology During The Interwar Period, 1919-1939, William Erik Deupree
Innovation On A Budget The Development Of Military Technology During The Interwar Period, 1919-1939, William Erik Deupree
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the progress of technological development during the interwar period of 1919 to 1939. The interwar period was a time of slashed military budgets and isolationist policies. However, despite political, financial, and organizational handicaps, each branch of the military made significant progress in the development of military technology, and the air corps and navy achieved significantly better results. The reason these two branches were able succeed was through a combination of organizational policy and the development of an overarching goal for their respective branch. Within this thesis, I investigated each of the major military branches during the interwar …
A Multiscale Model Of The Neonatal Circulatory System Following Hybrid Norwood Palliation, Andres Ceballos
A Multiscale Model Of The Neonatal Circulatory System Following Hybrid Norwood Palliation, Andres Ceballos
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hypoplastic left heat syndrome (HLHS) is a complex cardiac malformation in neonates suffering from congenital heart disease and occurs in nearly 1 per 5000 births. HLHS is uniformly fatal within the first hours or days after birth as the severly malformed anatomies of the left ventricle, mitral, and aortic valves, and ascending aorta are not compatable with life. The regularly implemented treatment, the Norwood operation, is a complex open heart procedure that attempts to establish univenticular circulation by removing the atrial septum ( communicating the right and left ventricle), reconstructing the malformed aortic arch, and connecting the main pulmonary artery …

The Actor's Role In Developing New Plays, Brooke M. Haney
The Actor's Role In Developing New Plays, Brooke M. Haney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The constant development of new plays is vital for theatre to stay relevant. There is a desire, a yearning, a need to see the issues we face in our lives on stage in current contexts, and to watch characters living with them. The ability, as an Actor, to be an asset to the process of creating new works is invaluable. For my thesis, I discuss the role of the Actor in the process of developing new plays for the stage. I say “discuss” because I venture to guess that this role is constantly evolving. There may be as many ways …

Focusing on the combination of multi-cultural and historical influences from my personal life experiences, my creations of odd juxtapositions of space, complex pattern and new iconography in my paintings, reveal more than merely a representational image to a viewer. Although my subjects may vary from the anonymous to media celebrity, it is their relationship to me that influences the creation of my static animation and visual noise.
Ray Collection Bounding Volume Hierarchy, Kris Krishna Rivera
Ray Collection Bounding Volume Hierarchy, Kris Krishna Rivera
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents Ray Collection BVH, an improvement over a current day Ray Tracing acceleration structure to both build and perform the steps necessary to efficiently render dynamic scenes. Bounding Volume Hierarchy (BVH) is a commonly used acceleration structure, which aides in rendering complex scenes in 3D space using Ray Tracing by breaking the scene of triangles into a simple hierarchical structure. The algorithm this thesis explores was developed in an attempt at accelerating the process of both constructing this structure, and also using it to render these complex scenes more efficiently. The idea of using "ray collection" as a …
Technique Arms The Imagination Developing An Acting Theory Best Suited For Motion Capture Performance And The Creation Of A Virtual Character, Brendan Rogers
Technique Arms The Imagination Developing An Acting Theory Best Suited For Motion Capture Performance And The Creation Of A Virtual Character, Brendan Rogers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
“The untrained body, like the sculptor's marble, can express nothing but its own limitations” (Lust 70). As acting styles have changed through the years, corresponding schools of thought have arisen to prepare performers for their unique challenges. Perhaps the goal of producing a “gripping performance,” one in which the audience is truly invested, has remained the same since the time of Thespis. How one arrives at this desired result, however, has varied greatly through the ages. Techniques, not surprisingly, tend to build on previous theories, beliefs and practices. Étienne Decroux’s corporeal mime technique builds on the teachings of Jacques Copeau, …

Worldview, Ideology, And Ceramic Iconography A Study Of Late Terminal Formative Graywares From The Lower Rio Verde Valley Of Oaxaca, Mexico, Jeffrey S. Brzezinski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates worldview and ideology during the late Terminal Formative period (A.D. 100 – 250) in the lower Río Verde Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, through an analysis of iconography found on grayware ceramic serving vessels. The sample includes 457 vessels and sherds from 17 lower Verde sites obtained through excavations and surface collections between 1988 and 2009. Drawing upon theories of semiotics and style, this thesis identifies a suite of icons suggesting that ceramics were a medium for expressing regionally shared beliefs. Chatino potters carved common Formative period Mesoamerican themes into the walls of graywares, such as depictions of …
Field Implementation Of Polyacrylamide For Runoff From Construction Sites, Rafiqul Islam Chowdhury
Field Implementation Of Polyacrylamide For Runoff From Construction Sites, Rafiqul Islam Chowdhury
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Polyacrylamide (PAM) is often used a part of a treatment train for the treatment of stormwater to reduce its turbidity. This study investigated the application of PAM within various treatment systems for a construction site environment. The general concept is to introduce hydraulic principles when placing PAM blocks within an open channel in order to yield high mixing energies leading to high turbidity removal efficiency. The first part of the study observed energy variation using a hydraulic flume for three dissimilar configurations. The flume was ultimately used to determine which configuration would be most beneficial when transposed into field-scale conditions. …
Convergence Of The Mean Shift Algorithm And Its Generalizations, Ting Hu
Convergence Of The Mean Shift Algorithm And Its Generalizations, Ting Hu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mean shift is an effective iterative algorithm widely used in image analysis tasks like tracking, image segmentation, smoothing, filtering, edge detection and etc. It iteratively estimates the modes of the probability function of a set of sample data points based in a region. Mean shift was invented in 1975, but it was not widely used until the work by Cheng in 1995. After that, it becomes popular in computer vision. However the convergence, a key character of any iterative algorithm, has been rigorously proved only very recently, but with strong assumptions. In this thesis, the method of mean shift is …
Bayesian Model Selection For Classification With Possibly Large Number Of Groups, Justin Kyle Davis
Bayesian Model Selection For Classification With Possibly Large Number Of Groups, Justin Kyle Davis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the present dissertation is to study model selection techniques which are specifically designed for classification of high-dimensional data with a large number of classes. To the best of our knowledge, this problem has never been studied in depth previously. We assume that the number of components p is much larger than the number of samples n, and that only few of those p components are useful for subsequent classification. In what follows, we introduce two Bayesian models which use two different approaches to the problem: one which discards components which have “almost constant” values (Model 1) and …
Spectrum Sharing And Service Pricing In Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks, Swastik Kumar Brahma
Spectrum Sharing And Service Pricing In Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks, Swastik Kumar Brahma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Traditionally, radio spectrum has been statically allocated to wireless service providers (WSPs). Regulators, like FCC, give wireless service providers exclusive long term licenses for using specific range of frequencies in particular geographic areas. Moreover, restrictions are imposed on the technologies to be used and the services to be provided. The lack of flexibility in static spectrum allocation constrains the ability to make use of new technologies and the ability to redeploy the spectrum to higher valued uses, thereby resulting in inefficient spectrum utilization [23, 38, 42, 62, 67]. These limitations have motivated a paradigm shift from static spectrum allocation towards …

Numerous assessment tools utilized for the evaluation of counseling competencies have been developed, yet none has gained universal acceptance in the field of counselor education. The Counseling Competencies Scale© (CCS, UCF Counselor Education …
Spatio-Temporal Negotiation Protocols, Yi Luo
Spatio-Temporal Negotiation Protocols, Yi Luo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Canonical problems are simplified representations of a class of real world problems. They allow researchers to compare algorithms in a standard setting which captures the most important challenges of the real world problems being modeled. In this dissertation, we focus on negotiating a collaboration in space and time, a problem with many important real world applications. Although technically a multi-issue negotiation, we show that the problem can not be represented in a satisfactory manner by previous models. We propose the "Children in the Rectangular Forest" (CRF) model as a possible canonical problem for negotiating spatio-temporal collaboration. In the CRF problem, …
Variational Embedded Solitons, And Traveling Wavetrains Generated By Generalized Hopf Bifurcations, In Some Nlpde Systems, Todd Blanton Smith
Variational Embedded Solitons, And Traveling Wavetrains Generated By Generalized Hopf Bifurcations, In Some Nlpde Systems, Todd Blanton Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this Ph.D. thesis, we study regular and embedded solitons and generalized and degenerate Hopf bifurcations. These two areas of work are seperate and independent from each other. First, variational methods are employed to generate families of both regular and embedded solitary wave solutions for a generalized Pochhammer PDE and a generalized microstructure PDE that are currently of great interest. The technique for obtaining the embedded solitons incorporates several recent generalizations of the usual variational technique and is thus topical in itself. One unusual feature of the solitary waves derived here is that we are able to obtain them in …

Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is showing great potential as an atomic analytical technique. With its ability to rapidly analyze all forms of matter, with little-to-no sample preparation, LIBS has many advantages over conventional atomic emission spectroscopy techniques. With the maturation of the technologies that make LIBS possible, there has been a growing movement to implement LIBS in portable analyzers for field applications. In particular, LIBS has long been considered the front-runner in the drive for stand-off detection of trace deposits of explosives. Thus there is a need for a better understanding of the relevant processes that are responsible for …

Stress Shielding Minimized In Femoral Hip Implants A Finite Element Model Optimized By Virtual Compatibility, Christian E. Feldt
Stress Shielding Minimized In Femoral Hip Implants A Finite Element Model Optimized By Virtual Compatibility, Christian E. Feldt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bone mechanics and traditional implant materials produce a recurring problem for patients of total hip arthroplasty (THA): the bone is “shielded” from the loading it has become accustomed to over many years of development. Bone adheres to what is called “Wolff’s Law”, meaning it is an adaptive structure which adjusts its geometry based on the loads experienced over its life (Pearson; Goldstein). As the new femoral hip implant transmits reduced stresses to the remaining bone, bone tissue atrophies at the interface, permitting loosening of the implant, pain, and thereby obliging additional surgery to correct the issue (Meade). In the present …
