Process control languages are generally complex and machine-oriented. Their use requires a high degree of skill, not only in process control knowledge, but also in the programming. On one extreme, control programs are written in assembler language. This is a time-consuming process and the high investment is tailored to a specific application. The resulting programs are difficult to communicate between the programmer and the user. On the other extreme, recent attempts have used high-level languages, i.e., FORTRAN, but these still require assembly-level supplements. In general, only the programmers know what the program does. A software interface between a firmware documentation system and a logic simulator named TEGAS-51 is described. The interface accepts PALASM2 inputs for PAL files. The output is an ASCII file which defines the firmware parts in TEGAS-5 format. Modules are written in FORTRAN and command routines are written in DCL on VAX 11/780 machines. No system calls are required, so portability is maintained. Limitations include the inability to load two different programs in identical firmware parts on the same design, but this can be overcome.

This research addresses two distinct areas of synthetic organic chemistry: the use of phase transfer catalysts for the fluoroalkoxylation of activated haloaromatic and haloheteroaromatic systems, as well as the Grignard addition and sodium cyanoborohydride reduction of aryl chloropropeniminium salts. In Part I of this research, a number of macrocyclic- and linear polytethers were studied as phase transfer catalysts in the nucleophilic aromatic substitution of haloaromitc systems. The most effective catalyst was determined to be poly(ethylene glycol)-8000 and the reaction conditions were optimized for this catalyst. Subsequently isomer reactivity, effects of activating groups, effects of leaving groups, and nucleophiles were studied …

In the design of an elastic structure, a major consideration is the overall stability of the system under axial load or a combination of an axial load and bending moment. In first-order analysis the effects of axial forces on the stiffness formulation and their influence on deformations of the members are usually neglected. If the axial forces are sufficiently large, a better indication of the distribution of the forces and moments in the structure is obtained by using a second-order analysis. The Gallium Arsenide Field Effect transistor (GaAs FET) is experiencing a widespread acceptance in space and terrestrial systems due to its low noise, high gain and frequency characteristics unmatched by bipolar devices. This paper describes a design of a 4 GHz low noise amplifier with GaAs FETs using the scattering parameters method. Special attention is given to overall noise/gain optimization in the band of interest. The Smith Chart is used extensively to match the two-port device with microstrip networks. Analysis and performance of the amplifier are presented.

Fiber optic temperature sensors are excellent candidates for monitoring the temperature along the stator windings of a large electric power generator. Unlike thermocouple thermometers, they are immune to the effects of strong magnetic fields which are present in all power generators. Several different point and line sensors have been evaluated in their ability to resolve temperature and temperature distribution (respectively), as well as their compatibility with the generator environment. The sensor must function inside the generator for long periods of time (up to 25 years) without benefit of recalibration. This constraint has required us to devise methods by which the …

The purpose of this is to design an electro-oculometer system that paper will enable quadriplegics and other persons with severe physical disablities to use a computer. An electro-oculometer is a device that measures the position of a person's eyes. The vertical and horizontal movements of the eyes can be used to control an object on a computer screen. This, in turn, allows the user to operate a computer by eye motion alone. The requirements of the electro-oculometer system are specified and then a block diagram of the system is developed. This study builds on the work on community power structure which had evolved since the publication of the Lynds' Middletown. An empirical examination of the conflict over the proposed construction of the Orlando Utilities Commission's Curtis H. Stanton Energy Center is undertaken in the context of alternative hypotheses concerning the structure of power. The theoretical positions of the two major schools of community power structure--plural-elitist and single-elitist--are examined. A software package for linear programming has been developed using the revised simplex and dual simplex algorithms. The design of the program incorporates an experimental change in the dual simplex algorithm. If the entered problem is not primal feasible, a modified dual simplex algorithm is used. The traditional dual simplex method requires an initial dual feasible basis and maintains feasibility throughout its application. The experimental change is to ignore this criteria of dual feasibility. The objective then becomes to obtain primal feasibility. Recent advances in activated sludge facilities operations utilize sludge recycle flow rate control to minimize adverse effects on the clarifier during peak solids loading situations. Although this control action is directed at the thickening function, there has been speculation that the elevated recycle rates may be responsible for an increased effluent solids concentration. To evaluate the significance of recycle rate to the steady-state effluent suspended solids concentration, identical side-by-side settling columns were operated with recycle rates spanning the range of normal practice. Individuals may approach an activity with either intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivational orientations are characterized by simplicity and predictability. Intrinsic motivation is characterized by novelty, complexity, and challenge. Task noncontingent rewards, in contrast to task contingent rewards, have been found to maintain or foster increases in intrinsic interest in a task. One explanation of this effect is that additional nonspecific factors like the perceived warmth of the experimenter was positively correlated with the noncontingent reward condition. Abstinence used to be the only recommended goal for persons affected with alcohol misuse. In recent years there has been a trend to suggest controlled drinking for some alcohol abusers. The comparison of abstinence versus controlled drinking indicates that controlled drinking goals have proved to be successful in a limited attempt with problem drinkers having middle income, average intelligence, stable job and adequate social support system. Severely dependent alcoholics (gamma type) have been trained in some instances to control their drinking in a laboratory environment, but their control erodes over time. The flow patterns of an air-water mixture at atmospheric pressure were visually observed through a simulated vertical steam generator tube support plate of circular hole and trefoil designs. Flow oscillations with a period on the order of 0.4 seconds were observed in both support plates at similar mass flow rate combinations. The oscillation consisted of a period of rapid surging followed by a low flow or stagnation period on the order of 0.1 seconds. Reverse (downward) flow was also observed for part of the oscillation cycle in the trefoil support plate. The flow oscillations that exist in one tube support …

Although the system developed was used to train tank gunners, the system concepts are generic in that they can be applied to many training scenarios. A fiber optic fluid level sensor based on light transmission attenuation due to bending losses is designed, built and tested.

Fibers formed with reverse curvatures of decreasing radii will induce and increasing amount of lower order mode light loss to the cladding as the light propagates along the step index multimode fiber. The sensor is arranged in the fluid in a vertical position such that the light travels along the fiber from the bottom or low fluid point to the top or full point. In November, 1983, 93 sexually immature and 33 mature grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella Val.) were surgically sterilized by clipping the gonaduct or removing a section of the ovaries of testes through a ventral incision between the pelvic girdle and the vent. No mortality occurred from this procedure. After six months (May, 1984), 95.7% of the immature and 100% of the mature grass carp had at least some gonadal tissue regeneration. Fifty-nine percent of the immature fish regenerated a pathway for the eggs or milt to enter the environment. Artificial spawning of the mature female grass carp was 66.7% successful. Over …

Land application of domestic wastewater effluent by rapid rate infiltration (i.e., percolation ponds) is a very successful and cost-effective method for wastewater management. Municipal percolation pond systems have been successfully operated in the United States for about 100 years. The disposal concept depends on a relatively high rate of secondary wastewater effluent infiltration into the soil by rapid percolation, either vertically or horizontally, away from the application surface area. This study attempted to clarify to what degree assurances of confidentiality and interviewer behavior protective of confidentiality impacted an interviewee’s trust of an interviewer and subsequent willingness to self-disclose. Ninety-six undergraduates were asked interview questions. Male and female subjects were divided into four conditions: confidentiality statement/protective behavior, confidentiality statement/nonprotective behavior, neutral statement/protective behavior, and neutral statement/nonprotective behavior. The Intended Self-Disclosure Questionnaire and Counselor Rating Form were used to measure self-disclosure and trustworthiness levels. Results did not support the main hypothesis that protective behavior would have a more significant impact on self-disclosure and trustworthiness than verbal assurances of confidentiality. This report includes the determination of activity and possible mode of action for a group of potential new insecticides. The biological screening procedure was developed using Drosophila melanogaster as the test organism while Musca domestica was used for mode of action assays. The percent kill for each compound is based on the number of eggs placed on media containing the insecticide minus the number of adults enclosed as compared to the control media reared flies. Observations were made on all stages from eggs through adults to determine time of death and if any malformations were present. These observations aided in …

The relationship between internal precision and input/output precision and the ratio of sample frequency to signal frequency has been described in qualitative terms for the general case and in quantitative terms for many special cases. This paper attempts to generate quantitative approximated guidelines for the general case. Lowpass and bandpass digital filters are implemented using cascaded second order sections via a program that varies the amount of internal precision available for the emulation, and calculates the error produced compared to a 64 bit standard. Furthermore, Texas Instruments has provided thorough software and development support. However, this chip was not designed to support digital signal processing applications which require multiple-precision operations. The Fujitsu MB8764 digital signal processing chip is designed to operate with a machine cycle of up to 10 MHz. The chip’s ability to perform a 16-by-16 bit multiply and add operation in one machine cycle makes it a good candidate for real time digital signal processing. Unlike the Intel 2920 the Fujitsu MB8764 does not have an onboard analog-to-digital, digital-to-analog converter.
