Design Considerations For A Digital Audio Equalizer, Timothy Young Jan 1985

Design Considerations For A Digital Audio Equalizer, Timothy Young

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to consider a method for designing a digital audio equalizer. The primary design criteria is minimum audible frequency response error between a digital and a "reference" analog equalizer throughout the entire audio frequency range from 20 Hz to 20 Khz. The first step is to obtain a set of analog filters that suitably represent the reference equalization. From these filters, digital filter coefficients are generated using the bilinear transformation. Then, the digital filters are combined with anti-aliasing and D/A reconstruction filters and a zero-order hold to complete the design. Analysis of methods to minimize …

The Orlando Utilities Commission's Curtis H. Stanton Energy Center- A Case Study Of Community Power Structure, Girvan G. Shirley

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study builds on the work on community power structure which had evolved since the publication of the Lynds' Middletown. An empirical examination of the conflict over the proposed construction of the Orlando Utilities Commission's Curtis H. Stanton Energy Center is undertaken in the context of alternative hypotheses concerning the structure of power. The theoretical positions of the two major schools of community power structure--plural-elitist and single-elitist--are examined. The origins and arguments for the plant are presented, and the origins, tactics and counter-arguments of the opposition to the plant are also examined. The interaction and development of the conflict between …

The Effect Of Experimenter's Warmth/ Coldness On Intrinsic Motivation, Phillip N. Guikema Jan 1985

The Effect Of Experimenter's Warmth/ Coldness On Intrinsic Motivation, Phillip N. Guikema

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Individuals may approach an activity with either intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivational orientations are characterized by simplicity and predictability. Intrinsic motivation is characterized by novelty, complexity, and challenge. Task noncontingent rewards, in contrast to task contingent rewards, have been found to maintain or foster increases in intrinsic interest in a task. One explanation of this effect is that additional nonspecific factors like the perceived warmth of the experimenter was positively correlated with the noncontingent reward condition. To test this assumption, second grade subjects played with a game of intermediate complexity in one of four conditions: "cold" instructor with contingent reward, "cold" …

The movement and fate of heavy metal inputs (Cd, Zn, Mn, Cu, Al, Fe, Pb, Ni and Cr) from highway runoff were investigated in a three-year study on 1.3 hectare retention facility near the Maitland Interchange on Interstate 4, north of Orlando, Florida. Physical characteristics of the retention pond and surrounding watershed were defined and field instrumentation was installed. Stormwater samples were collected over a one-year period, representing a wide range of intensities and antecedent dry periods. Stormwater characteristics were compared with average retention pond water quality to determine removal efficiencies for heavy metals within the pond. A total of …

The Application Of Value Analysis Techniques To Service Organizations, David M. Richardson Jan 1985

The Application Of Value Analysis Techniques To Service Organizations, David M. Richardson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This research involves review of value analysis and value engineering techniques and application of these techniques to a service organization. Application of value analysis techniques to service organizations required some modification due to the amount of labor intensive, manual operations typical of many service industries. The modified value analysis methodology was applied to a fueling operation performed by Kennedy Space Center as part of their space shuttle operations. The successful application of this technique illustrated that value analysis methodology can be applied to service organizations with slight modifications.

The Design Of An Internal Resource Allocation Model For Use In Higher Education, Ann Clark Jan 1985

The Design Of An Internal Resource Allocation Model For Use In Higher Education, Ann Clark

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A computer model has been developed for the purpose of allocating funds, by department, within a university. This model categorizes each class as one of three types -- lecture, problem solving, or laboratory. A standard class size is assigned to each type -- 40, 25, and 10 respectively. Combining the previous years head count for each class with the credit-hour value of each class, a faculty position count for every department is generated.

Administrative positions, staff positions, operating expense, and operating capital funds are calculated using various combinations of factors involving student credit hours, faculty positions, and class type. Factors …

Experimental Software Package For Linear Programming, Deborah S. Fogal Jan 1985

Experimental Software Package For Linear Programming, Deborah S. Fogal

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A software package for linear programming has been developed using the revised simplex and dual simplex algorithms. The design of the program incorporates an experimental change in the dual simplex algorithm. If the entered problem is not primal feasible, a modified dual simplex algorithm is used. The traditional dual simplex method requires an initial dual feasible basis and maintains feasibility throughout its application. The experimental change is to ignore this criteria of dual feasibility. The objective then becomes to obtain primal feasibility. Once this is attained, the revised simplex algorithm is applied to obtain optimality, if this has not been …

Survey Of Texture And Shading Techniques For Visual Flight Simulation, Walter R. Steiner Jan 1985

Survey Of Texture And Shading Techniques For Visual Flight Simulation, Walter R. Steiner

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Shading and texturing are two techniques that flight simulators can take advantage of to increase scene realism. Shading imitates the effects of light reflecting from a surface. Texture refers to superimposing a pattern on a surface to give the illusion of extra detail and realism.

In this report, several techniques for shading and texturing are evaluated with respect to their applicability to visual flight simulators.

The image quality produced by shading and texturing is a function of computation cost. The Phong model is found to produce the most realistic shading, but is too computationally expensive. The Gouraud shading model improves …

Fiber Optic Fluid Level Sensor, Navid Ghandeharioun Jan 1985

Fiber Optic Fluid Level Sensor, Navid Ghandeharioun

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A fiber optic fluid level sensor based on light transmission attenuation due to bending losses is designed, built and tested.

Fibers formed with reverse curvatures of decreasing radii will induce and increasing amount of lower order mode light loss to the cladding as the light propagates along the step index multimode fiber. The sensor is arranged in the fluid in a vertical position such that the light travels along the fiber from the bottom or low fluid point to the top or full point. As the fluid covers increasing lengths of the exposed fiber, it strips even more power from …

A Computational Model To Estimate The Thickness Of The Waterfilm Due To Rain On The Upper Surface Of An Airfoil, Padmanabha R. Chappidi Jan 1985

A Computational Model To Estimate The Thickness Of The Waterfilm Due To Rain On The Upper Surface Of An Airfoil, Padmanabha R. Chappidi

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Based on a two-phase boundary layer approach, a computational model is proposed to estimate the thickness of the waterfilm due to rain on the upper surface of an airfoil. The coupling between the air boundary layer and the water film is established by the conservation of mass and momentum at the interface. By a simple coordinate transformation, the interface is conformed to the finite difference grid system. Trajectory analysis of a raindrop of 1 mm diameter shows that the impingement of drops is high near the leading edge of the airfoil and decreases downstream. The finite difference equations of air/waterfilm …

Sex Differences In Dietary Practices And Attitudes Toward Weight, Mary F. Rollins Jan 1985

Sex Differences In Dietary Practices And Attitudes Toward Weight, Mary F. Rollins

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Obesity constitutes one of America's major health problems. It has been estimated that there are 40 to 80 million Americans who are considered obese (Stuart & Davis, 1972). When 20% above ideal weight is used as a criterion of overweight, it is approximated that 25% to 45% of American adults fall into this category (Rodin, 1977).

There is a sex difference in the prevalence of obesity. While some studies suggest that biological factors predispose females toward obesity (Stuart & Jacobson, 1979), other studies attribute the sex differences to social factors (Hall & Havassy 1981; Wooley, Wooley, & Dyrenforth 1979a; Zegman …

Dietary, Cognitive, And Behavioral Variables As Predictors Of Weight Loss Maintenance, Lorisa. Pearce-Lewis Jan 1985

Dietary, Cognitive, And Behavioral Variables As Predictors Of Weight Loss Maintenance, Lorisa. Pearce-Lewis

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Obesity is a very complex problem involving dietary, psychological, social, and behavioral factors. Although behavioral treatment for obesity has been found to be effective for weight loss during treatment, results of studies to date on the prediction of long-term weight loss maintenance have been mixed and inconsistent. This study was conducted as a follow-up to a behavioral study by Zegman (1983) in an attempt to identify potential predictors of short- and long-term weight loss. Dietary, cognitive, and behavioral variables were examined by multiple regression analyses as possible predictors of short- and long-term weight loss were identified. Methodological questions were raised …

Protein Concentration Elevations In Mouse Lungs Following Sudden Transient Cephalad (+Gz) Acceleration, Charles J. Gutierrez Jan 1985

Protein Concentration Elevations In Mouse Lungs Following Sudden Transient Cephalad (+Gz) Acceleration, Charles J. Gutierrez

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Laboratory and feral lineages of mice were subjected to cephalad (+GZ) accelerations, for 1.8 seconds, aboard a solid fuel rocket. Spectrophotometric analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage retrieved post launch revealed significant (p < .001) elevations of protein in the lungs of experimental mice. Sudden transient imposition of a mean +GZ acceleration of 6.22 ± .47 (SD) G, at lift-off, may have induced hypervolemia of basilar pulmonary microvasculature with concomitant migration of fluid and protein from intravascular to juxta-alveolar perivascular compartments. Exudates may have entered bronchiolar airways subsequently gravitating toward alveoli.

A Comparative Study On Presently And Previously Obese Individuals In Food Diary Records, And Lifestyle Data By Subjects Attending A Weight Control Program, Ileana M. Mancusi Jan 1985

A Comparative Study On Presently And Previously Obese Individuals In Food Diary Records, And Lifestyle Data By Subjects Attending A Weight Control Program, Ileana M. Mancusi

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In an attempt to replicate and extend previous research on the validity of food diary records, 18 obese and 16 previously obese individuals from the community were quizzed on food recording and kcalorie estimation in a controlled analogue of self-monitoring. Results of the experimental phase of the study replicate those of previous studies indicating that the food diaries of obese clients are invalid because of poor food descriptions, incorrect quantity estimates, and errors in converting kcalories. The results also indicate that subjects tend to overestimate quantities and kcalories of foods. However, the present study extended previous research by examining the …

Multiplan Models For Construction, Edson. Jackson Jan 1985

Multiplan Models For Construction, Edson. Jackson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

As computer hardware becomes smaller and increasingly less expensive, more contractors can now use computers to do a number of construction computations which were formally done on hand calculators. The advent of user-oriented software packages has had a significant impact on the traditional data processing procedures of the construction industry. Among the software packages that are available for a large number of computer systems are electronic spreadsheets. Electronic spreadsheets packages, such as Multiplan, are widely used where the display of information can best be depicted in an array of rows and columns. It is frequently useful in situations in which …
