A Study Of A Plane Dislocation Problem, Daniel D. Kana Dec 1960

A Study Of A Plane Dislocation Problem, Daniel D. Kana

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

This paper treats a more complete solution to the logarithmic spiral problem. Some changes in the basic dislocation theory are first accomplished to generalize the form of functions involved. The resulting equations are then applied to the logarithmic spiral dislocation at a hole in a large plate. A complete solution of pertinent stresses is obtained. Data are calculated to obtain the required dislocation relation along the logarithmic spiral cut, circumferential stress at the hole, and maximum shear stress along the dislocation cut.

Critical Masses Of Oralloy Cylinders With Multiple Reflectors Of Medium Z Elements, David P. Wood Jun 1960

Critical Masses Of Oralloy Cylinders With Multiple Reflectors Of Medium Z Elements, David P. Wood

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Critical mass is influenced mainly by the density, concentration, and shape of the fissionable material, the degree of neutron moderation, and the type and thickness of reflector material. Most of these parameters have been explored in detail at the Pajarito Remote-Control Laboratory (1) and the present series of measurements has the purpose of investigating reflector materials in the middle of the periodic table for the more subtle influence of their resonance scattering structure.

An Experimental Method For Three-Dimensional Dynamic Stress Analysis, Larry E. Williams

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

It is the purpose of this thesis to present an evaluation of a method of experimental dynamic stress analysis utilizing electrical resistance strain gauges located internally. If it can be shown that the proposed experimental procedure is valid, then the transient stress phenomena could be continuously recorded from an internal, integral strain gauge placed at any desired location and in any orientation in a suitable model.

Effect Of Strain Rate And Temperature On The Stress-Strain Characteristics Of Plastics, Walter W. Joseph Apr 1959

Effect Of Strain Rate And Temperature On The Stress-Strain Characteristics Of Plastics, Walter W. Joseph

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The stress-strain characteristics of a material are a measure of the energy absorption characteristics of that material. Generally, plastics show permanent deformation at low values of strain but will withstand a large amount of strain before reaching their ultimate strength. Therefore, in effect, plastics are good energy absorbing materials. If the packaging designer could predict the effect of variation in strain rate and temperature on the stress-strain characteristics of a given plastic, his designs would be more reliable.

Analysis Of Cushioned Impact By Wave Propagation Techniques, Lowell P. Martin Jun 1958

Analysis Of Cushioned Impact By Wave Propagation Techniques, Lowell P. Martin

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

A typical problem of wave propagation which has received substantial attention concerns the longitudinal vibrations of a long, slender, uniform elastic rod after it has been dropped on one end.

The purpose of this investigation was to extend the problem to include the effect of cushioning material attached to the impacting end of a rod similar to that described above; and to conduct experiments designed to verify the analysis. This study is essentially the first step toward the analysis, by wave propagation methods, of many practical impact problems encountered in military airborne operations, experimental rocket programs, and the packaging industry.

A New Design Key Locked Insert And Automatic Key Installation Tool, Holt J. Gay May 1957

A New Design Key Locked Insert And Automatic Key Installation Tool, Holt J. Gay

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

There has been an increasing need for a better steel insert or bushing between aluminum and steel bolts in the last few years with the rapid growth of the aircraft and missile industries. The steel insert or bushing threaded internally and externally, by increasing the area of contact with the aluminum raises the strength of the bolt fastening combination approximately 300 per cent or causes a 125,000 PSI bolt to fail rather than 40,000 PSI aluminum to fail. In addition, galling and seizing are practically eliminated. A bolt installed and removed just a few times in aluminum is likely to …

The Variations Of Stress Induced In An Eccentrically Located Bolt Securing A Flanged Joint, Verne E. Blake Jr. Jan 1956

The Variations Of Stress Induced In An Eccentrically Located Bolt Securing A Flanged Joint, Verne E. Blake Jr.

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

It is common practice in design work to use bolts as a means of attaching load carrying members. In many instances it is not possible to locate the bolt so the line of action of the external load will pass through the bolt axis. As a result, there are secondary loads, resulting from the eccentricity of the load paths, which the bolt must resist in addition to the primary loads.

The Response Of Vibration Mounts Subjected To Biharmonic Vibration, Paul H. Adams Jan 1956

The Response Of Vibration Mounts Subjected To Biharmonic Vibration, Paul H. Adams

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Existing specifications used in vibration testing are based on envelopes of many points of fixed frequency and vibration amplitude measured at specific points in aircraft. In addition these specifications are to some extent written to be compatible with the two common types of vibration test machines, the reaction or constant-displacement type and the electromagnetic or constant-acceleration type. Thus the "envelope" of the measured vibration amplitudes is drawn in such a manner as to have a constant displacement from 3 to 60 cycles per second, the range of the reaction type of vibration test machine, and a constant acceleration from 60 …

A Shock Tube For Transonic And Supersonic Aerodynamic Research, John Hopkins Atkinson May 1955

A Shock Tube For Transonic And Supersonic Aerodynamic Research, John Hopkins Atkinson

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The purpose of building a shock tube was to give the University another research tool and demonstration instrument for aerodynamic studies since the present wind tunnel is not suitable for high velocity research. It was hoped that the shock tube might, when calibrated against theoretical flow data, prove suitable as a test facility. Te determine its usefulness as such a facility it was necessary to devise a method for measuring local velocities, investigate size effects of models in the flow and provide a check against standard wind tunnel data. The shock tube was to be built as simply and cheaply …

A Mathematical And Experimental Investigation Of The Application Of Air Spring To Shock Testing Machines, Eric E. Ungar Jun 1954

A Mathematical And Experimental Investigation Of The Application Of Air Spring To Shock Testing Machines, Eric E. Ungar

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The applications of many modern devices require them to be able to perform their functions satisfactorily after having been subjected to transient accelerations of considerable magnitude. Some Devices are required to operate even during the period of acceleration.

Since failure of components or sub-assemblies during the actual operation of the entire assembly would in general be extremely undesirable and costly (for example, failure of instrumentation in a high-speed aircraft or guided missile might lead to loss of the entire vehicle), it is necessary to test the components and sub-assemblies in order to determine whether they may be exposed to accelerations …

The general scope of the thesis investigation is limited to the engineering design and construction of a stationary-wave device for the experimental determination of the sound absorption coefficients of various building materials, the calibration of the apparatus to give comparisons with results obtained in the more expensive reverberation method, and to attempt to correlate observed results with generally accepted acoustical standards.

Development Of Electro-Mechanical Equipment For The Measurement Of Knock Characteristics Of Gasolines, Rudolph W. Ebacher May 1952

Development Of Electro-Mechanical Equipment For The Measurement Of Knock Characteristics Of Gasolines, Rudolph W. Ebacher

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

It was considered by the writer that characteristics of oscilloscope wave forms representing the varying pressures taking place in the CFR engine cylinder might provide an index to octane ratings of gasoline. Obtaining pressure wave forms on the oscilloscope required some medium for providing an electrical signal in response to engine cylinder pressures. A quartz pressure element was considered as the item that could fulfill this requirement.

An Inexpensive Method For Obtaining Heat Transfer Coefficients Of Southwest Building Material, Roy Elsworth Burris Feb 1948

An Inexpensive Method For Obtaining Heat Transfer Coefficients Of Southwest Building Material, Roy Elsworth Burris

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The need for establishing heat transfer coefficients of all types of building materials is well known among heating engineers. Much work has been done on this subject; but as types of building material vary in different sections of the country and standard materials will vary according to the type of raw material and method of manufacture, actual conductivity texts have been performed upon only a portion of the materials now in use.
