These are materials that may be used in a CS0 course as a light introduction to machine learning.

The materials are mostly Jupyter notebooks which contain a combination of labwork and lecture notes. There are notebooks on Classification, An Introduction to Numpy, and An Introduction to Pandas.

There are also two assessments that could be assigned to students. One is an essay assignment in which students are asked to read and respond to an article on machine bias. The other is a lab-like exercise in which students use pandas and numpy to extract useful information about subway ridership in NYC. …

In this archive there are two activities/assignments suitable for use in a CS0 or Intro course which uses Python.

In the first activity, students are asked to "fill in the code" in a series of short programs that compute a similarity metric (cosine similarity) for text documents. This involves string tokenization, and frequency counting using Python string methods and datatypes.

Participants will be federal judges who will be recruited via email. In an online survey, participants will be randomly assigned to one of four conditions . This meta-analysis updates the literature on the effectiveness of batterer intervention programs (BIPs) in decreasing recidivism of domestic violence (DV) by focusing on studies with nontreated comparison groups (N=17). Included studies were published between 1986 and 2016, and 14 of the 17 provided sufficient information for the meta-analytic analysis. Analysis focused on three reported outcomes: DV recidivism reported by the criminal justice system, intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration assessed by the survivor, and general offence recidivism reported by the criminal justice system. Results of meta-analysis indicated that BIPs were effective in decreasing DV recidivism and general offense recidivism when reported …

The school-to-prison pipeline is an expansive issue that impacts the educational and criminal justice systems in the United States. Traditionally, the research has linked the prevalence of the pipeline to factors based within school systems. These systemic factors include the use of zero tolerance policies, exclusionary disciplinary practices, and the presence of school resource officers. The proposed study aims to assess the impact of factors that perpetuate the school-to-prison pipeline that are non-systemic in nature.

The predictive validity of the Static-99 measures with ethnic minorities in the United States has only recently been assessed with mixed results. We assessed the predictive validity of the Static-99 and Static-99R with a sample of Latino sex offenders (N = 483) as well as with two subsamples (U.S.-born, including Puerto Rico, and non-U.S.-born). The overall sexual recidivism rate was very low (1.9%). Both the Static-99 measures were able to predict sexual recidivism for offenders born in the United States and Puerto Rico, but neither was effective in doing so for other Latino immigrants. Studies and accounts of change in police organizations frequently emphasize case studies of specific efforts enacted during relatively discrete periods of time in one or a few agencies. The narratives often emphasize the success of change efforts or seek to explain why initiatives failed in the case study agency. While instructive, such accounts do not provide broader insights into successes and failures with change across longer periods of time, differing types of change, and diverse organizational contexts. Using survey data from mid-career police supervisors attending the FBI National Academy program, this study considers change experiences. In particular, consideration is given …
