Reading Black As Orange: Supreme Court Of India On Section 173(4) Of Crpc, Nanditta Batra

Popular Media

Can the Supreme Court of India get the bare text of a provision wrong? To err is human, but when the judges of the top court in our country go wrong with something as basic as the words of a statute, it definitely cannot be overlooked as a mere error. It is one thing to interpret the provisions of a law and another to conjure up something in place of the black letters of law. No constitutional lens empowers a judge to read black as orange.

National De-Escalation Training Center - Year 1 In-Person Data Archive, Morgan Steele

Criminal Justice Research Data

This dataset includes the demographics, education, perceptions, and assessment of de-escalation skills of law enforcement officers, and other professionals, which were collected as a part of in-person de-escalation training. Many of these trainings were funded as a part of the Office of Community-Oriented Policing Services (U.S. Department of Justice). All of the data is anonymous, and can be linked based on the trainee generated identification number. This data was collected across three separate activities. The first was a pre-training survey that included questions about the trainees' demographics, perceptions, and experiences, and was collected via a Qualtrics survey link. The second …

The "Police Personality": Is It Real?, Michael F. Teneyck Jan 2023

The "Police Personality": Is It Real?, Michael F. Teneyck

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications

Much research has discussed the "police personality." Yet, it is still unclear what particular traits make up the police personality—or whether it exists at all. This can be partially attributed to the limited availability of data collected within individual police departments. Using a nationally representative sample of adults (Add Health), the current study examines whether the Big Five personality traits, temperamental characteristics, and empirically informed covariates are related to being a police officer. Results indicate that, compared to the general population, individuals in law enforcement score significantly lower on openness to experience. Police officers are also more likely than non-officers …

The Sexual And Gender-Based Violence Epidemic Meets The Covid-19 Pandemic: Survivors’ And Advocates’ Narratives In Egypt, Mozn Hassan, Helen Rizzo

Faculty Journal Articles

This research traces activism over the last 30 years against sexual and gender-based violence with a focus on survivors’ and advocates’ narratives in Egypt. We argue that several focusing events in Egypt and the support of transnational advocacy networks over the last decades have galvanised the efforts of activists and citizens of good will to mobilise around these issues. Egyptian feminist mobilisation during the pandemic brought to the public sphere the untold stories of the forms of violence that occurred through online and social media platforms. While social media and other online tools hold the promise of becoming “a new …

This edited volume is a pioneering and comprehensive study of crime victimisation in India. Relying on the findings of four crime victimisation surveys conducted in India, it provides a unique basis for understanding crime in society. It considers the public’s fear of crime and perceptions of safety and security, focusing on their access to the police and how they view police effectiveness. This study provides critical data on the level of crime within particular spatial and temporal conditions which can supplement official statistics on crime published by the state, help systematically diagnose law and order issues and develop solutions for …

International Experience In Regulating And Organizing Investigations By International Investigative Teams., Dilshod Egamberdiyev

Review of law sciences

In recent years, the international community has developed and opened for signature a number of international agreements regulating international cooperation in the fight against crime. Along with the legal regulation of traditional legal institutions, such as mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, these instruments provide an international legal framework for new areas of cooperation in this field. One of them is the operational-investigative group or the international investigation team. The organization of such types of investigations and joint activities of States is one of the most effective forms of interaction between investigators, investigative bodies and law enforcement agencies, as well …

Thick As Thieves: Bringing Armenia’S Robber Barons To Justice, Nerses Kopalyan

Political Science Faculty Research

There is a certain inhumanity to stealing from the poor, from the disenfranchised, from children, and quite simply, from one’s own society. But the magnitude of such cruelty is further elevated when the theft is undertaken and brazenly justified by those in positions of political power.

Forgiveness, Freedom And The Inmate Issue, Taylor Smith

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

Forgiveness Freedom and the Inmate Issue:

It is no secret that the United States has a mass incarceration problem. The war on drugs, traffic violations, and the Three Strikes Law, are just pieces of the systems being used to repeatedly place people behind bars. What we are facing now as a society is the repercussions of reintegrating under educated, digitally literate, mentally abandoned individuals back into society. In addition to post jail operatives like parole fees, fines and probation scheduling are re-sentencing these individuals into a society they no longer relate to, that socially struggle to adapt to and that …

Leveraging Data To Reduce Gun Violence: The Cincinnati Experience, Matthew G. Hammer, Tamara D. Herold

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The year 2020 has amplified demands for more equitable policing, more efficient government, and greater transparency. As police leaders around the world attempt to maintain order and safety during a period of large-scale civil unrest, they must also address criticisms that existing law enforcement practices include biased interventions and reinforce systemic racism. Many law enforcement agencies are also responding to increasing numbers of serious crimes that disproportionately affect society’s most vulnerable communities, while simultaneously facing calls to “defund the police” fueled by accusations that challenge the legitimacy of their policing tactics. The strategies used by agencies to manage protests and …

The Promise Of Happy Cows: How American Milk Brands Persuade Consumers Regarding Farm Animal Welfare Conditions And How Consumers Respond To Incidents Of Being Misled, Chelsea Newson

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to examine how American dairy companies employ language and imagery in brand communications (marketing, advertising, and public relations) to persuade consumers regarding farm animal welfare (FAW) conditions on supplier farms, and to examine how consumers respond in instances in which conditions on supplier farms are shown to be counter to what is depicted in brand communications. In other words, it examines how the dairy industry communicates its FAW-related values and promises to consumers and investigates consumer tolerance for being misled regarding FAW conditions. This project is thus intended as an exploration of the intersection …

Mass Incarceration And Voter Turnout Among African Americans In The United States (Is There A Correlation Between The Two?), Martha Wilson-Musgrove Aug 2019

Mass Incarceration And Voter Turnout Among African Americans In The United States (Is There A Correlation Between The Two?), Martha Wilson-Musgrove

Public Affairs Dissertations

In developing an understanding of political participation among historically underrepre-sented groups, a disproportionate number of African Americans receiving punishment (prison sentences) is an issue that warrants consideration when calculating voter turnout. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 protects the voting rights of people regardless of race or ethnicity. The in-creasing incarceration rate of African American men, popularly known as mass incarceration, is a criminal justice phenomenon ongoing since the 1980’s. This research focuses primarily on the relationship between voter turnout, general and more specifically African Americans, and mass incarceration. The study examines twelve General (Presidential) Elections since the passage of …
