Sensitivity Of Bovine Blastocyst Gene Expression Patterns To Culture Environments Assessed By Differential Display Rt-Pcr., D R Natale, P A De Sousa, M E Westhusin, A J Watson

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

The use of culture media to support the development of preimplantation embryos to the blastocyst stage is often associated with detrimental effects on normal development. These effects have been uncovered largely by investigating the phenotypic abnormalities displayed by fetuses and newborns derived from cultured preimplantation embryos. Research to understand the impact of culture on the embryonic developmental programme has focused on embryo metabolism, gene expression and genomic imprinting. We have used differential display RT-PCR to examine culture influences on global transcript pools in bovine embryos. Others have examined culture influences on candidate "marker genes" in cultured murine, ovine and bovine …

Teratogen Update: Reproductive Risks Of Leflunomide (Arava); A Pyrimidine Synthesis Inhibitor: Counseling Women Taking Leflunomide Before Or During Pregnancy And Men Taking Leflunomide Who Are Contemplating Fathering A Child, Robert L. Brent

The Selected Works of Robert Brent

Arava™ (leflunomide) is a pyrimidine synthesis inhibitor used in the treatment of active rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The chemical name for leflunomide is N- (4’-trifluoromethylphenyl)-5-methylisoxazole-4-carboxamide. Because the drug has been successful in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), it is being widely prescribed. In spite of the clear warning that the drug should not be prescribed for pregnant women, approximately 30 women have become pregnant while taking leflunomide as of December 1999. This commentary was prepared to aid teratology counselors and genetic counselors that might be contacted by physicians or patients about the risk of leflunomide exposure during pregnancy. Before the …

a Comparison of the ROle of Aspect in native and non-native inference
generation in Narrative comprehension

The acquisition of English aspect, as opposed to tense, and the information provided by it on the text/discourse level have received increasing attention in recent years (Bardovi-Harlig 1997). At the same time, our understanding of native speakers’ cognitive processing of aspect during text comprehension is sketchy (Magliano & Schleich 2000). The current study compares native and non-native readers’ processing of the effect of aspect on understanding simple narratives. This comparison will allow addressing the question whether English language learners in this study make …

Industrial Policy And The States: How Will They Pay?, Roy W. Bahl Jan 1986

Industrial Policy And The States: How Will They Pay?, Roy W. Bahl

ECON Publications

The success of any national industrial policy will depend heavily on the participation of state and local governments. Yet the financial implications for states and localities are almost overlooked in the discussion about national industrial policy. In this article, I consider the ways state and local governments might be involved in industrial policy, either as autonomous actors or as partners in a coordinated national policy; and I discuss constraints and competing demands on the resources to which state and local governments would turn to support their participation in such policies. Finally, I suggest a general policy framework for state and …
