Minds On Fire! The Importance Of Classroom Questions To Learning Outcomes, Eleanor Dougherty, Terry Roberts, Ann Pihlgren
ICOT 18 - International Conference on Thinking - Cultivating Mindsets for Global Citizens
This session addresses the ICOT question, "How do we develop mindfulness and thinking dispositions to learn?" The presenters detail three models involving questioning and prompting strategies to elicit specific types of thinking and learning responses: closed and open questioning, questions to elicit metacognitive responses, and the Paideia Seminar model. Attendees will learn about each model, engage in exercises with each model, and receive tasks they can use in their classrooms.
Simulation And Application Of Binary Logic Regression Models, Jobany J. Heredia Rico
Simulation And Application Of Binary Logic Regression Models, Jobany J. Heredia Rico
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Logic regression (LR) is a methodology to identify logic combinations of binary predictors in the form of intersections (and), unions (or) and negations (not) that are linearly associated with an outcome variable. Logic regression uses the predictors as inputs and enables us to identify important logic combinations of independent variables using a computationally efficient tree-based stochastic search algorithm, unlike the classical regression models, which only consider pre-determined conventional interactions (the “and” rules). In the thesis, we focused on LR with a binary outcome in a logistic regression framework. Simulation studies were conducted to examine the performance of LR under the …
Corrosion Behavior Of Steel In Deficient Grout With Enhanced Sulfate Ion Concentrations, Krishna Vigneshwaran Konda Krishnamurthy
Corrosion Behavior Of Steel In Deficient Grout With Enhanced Sulfate Ion Concentrations, Krishna Vigneshwaran Konda Krishnamurthy
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent corrosion failures of tendons in Florida post-tensioned (PT) bridges utilizing low bleed specified grout products have shown the need for better understanding of the mechanisms that cause corrosion and to determine the extent of the problem in PT tendons with similar materials. Those deficient grouts in the tendons showed low chloride content below commonly assumed threshold limits for corrosion initiation, but they showed higher concentrations of sulfate ions, high pore water pH and higher moisture content. The role of enhanced sulfate ion concentrations in the development of steel corrosion in deficient grout has not been elucidated, but the role …
Environmental Influences On Bacterio-Phytoplanktonic Coupling And Bacterial Growth Efficiency In A Sub-Tropical Estuary, Rachel Kotkowski
Environmental Influences On Bacterio-Phytoplanktonic Coupling And Bacterial Growth Efficiency In A Sub-Tropical Estuary, Rachel Kotkowski
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bacterio-phytoplanktonic coupling and bacterial growth efficiency (BGE) measurements were used to analyze microbial trophic dynamics and the influence of environmental factors in Florida Bay, Florida. Phytoplankton gross primary productivity (GPP) was measured using 24-hour in situ oxygen incubations; bacterial productivity (BP) was measured using 3H- thymidine incorporation. Weak bacterio-phytoplanktonic coupling was observed over the sampling period. BP was more influenced by local total nitrogen concentrations while GPP was more evenly distributed. BGE rates were low but consistent with marine and estuarine ecosystems worldwide. Results suggest that bacterioplankton growth in Florida Bay is relatively uncoupled from phytoplankton production, which may …
The Joycean Sublime, Anthony Moreno
The Joycean Sublime, Anthony Moreno
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of my thesis is to analyze notions of the sublime in James Joyce’s Ulysses and how the sublime is evoked and presented in Joyce’s work. The present work will examine concepts of the sublime from the Classical and Medieval period, through the Enlightenment, and into the Romantic era to develop my own definition. Placing the sublime in a historical perspective allows me to discover how the sublime is at work through Joyce’s creative use of complex narrative approaches. The beauty of aesthetic perfection was achieved by employing all of Joyce’s artistic faculties. My thesis investigates how Ulysses’ experimental …
Imagining Equality, Shifting Human Consciousness Toward Ecological Sustainability, Sarah Jacob
Imagining Equality, Shifting Human Consciousness Toward Ecological Sustainability, Sarah Jacob
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My thesis explored the idea that inequality is a human-made perspective that has been informed concurrently through social and metaphysical structures. My intent has been to show how inequality as a learned man-made system of consciousness has played a pivotal role in justifying the exploitation of other cultures and the environment in the name of progress, advancement and human destiny. I have explored the idea that anthropocentrism and ethno-centric patriarchy has been woven so deeply into the fabric of modern perception that we are largely unconscious of its existence, even while we reap the results in both environmental and social …
Evaluating The Jordanian National Security Strategy Toward The Palestinian_Jordanians (Palestinian_Jordanians As A Securitization Case-Study), Mohannad K. Al-Kasaji
Evaluating The Jordanian National Security Strategy Toward The Palestinian_Jordanians (Palestinian_Jordanians As A Securitization Case-Study), Mohannad K. Al-Kasaji
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In its approach to the Palestinian-Jordanians’ issue, this dissertation employs a security-based theory and technique, which deal with the issue as a securitization case-study. It employs a modified version of the securitization theory offered by the Copenhagen School to evaluate the classical Jordanian national security strategy toward Palestinian-Jordanians. It addresses, reviews, weighs and evaluates the four strategies and tools of the Jordanian securitization model toward Palestinian-Jordanians: exclusionism, tribalism, cooptation and ideologization, which present the independent variables of this study. This evaluation process is based on a multi-standard strategy, which discusses the goals, the evidence, the outputs and the structure of …
The Effect Of Introspection And Verbalization On The Confidence-Accuracy Correlation, Daniella Villalba
The Effect Of Introspection And Verbalization On The Confidence-Accuracy Correlation, Daniella Villalba
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study examined the effect of introspection and verbalization on the confidence-accuracy correlation. Recent research has likened the process of eyewitness confidence assessment to a process of attitude formation. Following this analogy, it was hypothesized that introspection would strengthen, while verbalization would weaken, the confidence-accuracy correlation. Participants viewed a mock crime, made a lineup identification and either introspected or verbalized reasons for their identification (or did neither) before assessing their confidence. Results revealed that while introspection failed to significantly improve the confidence-accuracy correlation, verbalization decreased the correlation. These findings provide further theoretical support for the conceptualization of eyewitness confidence …
