Intro To Restorative Practices, Rob Bishop

Profressional Development Day

Register here: https://mtu.libcal.com/event/11376067

In restorative practices, harmed parties have the opportunity to tell those responsible how they have been affected. Those responsible can gain empathy and understanding — not only for those directly affected, but for family, friends, co-workers and others. Then, the responsible parties have a chance to make amends and shed the "offender" label, hopefully breaking the cycle of violence, misbehavior and/or disruption.

I am an intern for the Immigration and Naturalization Program at Catholic Charities. This program provides assistance to immigrants who are currently seeking legal assistance in their immigration process. As an intern, I have been assisting victims of domestic violence and assault by writing and translating their personal statements. These statements are crucial to their application because they determine whether the applicant obtains legal status or not. I am also in charge of reviewing cases and making sure that prior documentation (police reports and applications) reflects the new documentation. Jail Reform: An Examination Of United States Justice System, Dominick Scardigno

Academic Festival

1 in 100. Those are the approximate odds of a U.S. citizen being incarcerated during their lifetime. This statistic alone is enough to prompt discussion regarding the efficiency of the United States criminal justice System. According to the National Institute of justice, an estimated 44% people that have been arrested in the United States are arrested again within the span of a single year and 77% are arrested again within 5 years. These statistics provoke conversations on a global level as to what the actual goals of a criminal justice system should be. It seems nearly impossible to declare an …

Leadership Education And Otherism, Jim Mohr, Kristine Hoover Apr 2023

Leadership Education And Otherism, Jim Mohr, Kristine Hoover

International Conference on Hate Studies

Othering is often an overlooked ethical and theoretical issue in the field of Leadership Studies. The need for greater inclusion in our organizations and in our communities is more important than ever given the structural disparities in access to health care and education, in criminal justice sentencing, and in fulfillment of leadership roles themselves. People in positions of power have a responsibility to understand othering processes and their impacts in organizations (Palfreyman, 2005). Leadership education can help to form leaders who are more aware of the importance of the quality of their relationships with the Other, grounded in values of …

Do Perceptions Of Guilt Vary As A Function Of Defendant Race And Crime Type? A Mock Crime Experiment, Elizabeth Murken, Rochelle Bergstrom

Student Academic Conference

Much past research has studied racial discrimination in the criminal justice system. Past research in 1983 by Sunnafrank and Fontes studied facial images and crimes and matched faces and crimes to correlate stereotypical crimes. Later research in 2003 by Jones and Kaplan furthered this research by comparing stereotypical crimes and non-stereotypical crimes. This study furthers Jones and Kaplan’s study by comparing different stereotypical crimes for the black defendant and not comparing a non-stereotypical crime.

Undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty and staff were surveyed to determine their experiences with crime, age, and levels of depression, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorder symptomology, and resilience. The …

Bridging The Gap Between Healthcare And Law Enforcement In The Field Of Forensics, Jennifer Rogers Apr 2023

Bridging The Gap Between Healthcare And Law Enforcement In The Field Of Forensics, Jennifer Rogers

Master of Science in Nursing Scholarly Project

The evolution and integration of forensic nursing into other disciplines within communities create an excellent opportunity to network and collaborate with personnel in other fields. However, this dynamic interaction into new territory may lead to collaborative and communication issues, especially in areas such as the criminal justice system. As the specialty of forensic nursing evolves and becomes more established in different areas of the community, the criminal justice system and nursing need to work together to bridge previously defined gaps.

Through analysis and evaluation of current research and literature, key contributing factors to gap this will be discussed and recommendations …

The Mobilizing Effect Of Descriptive Representation? The Impact Of Representatives’ Race And Gender On Participation, Akayla Henson, Brittany Wood Jan 2023

The Mobilizing Effect Of Descriptive Representation? The Impact Of Representatives’ Race And Gender On Participation, Akayla Henson, Brittany Wood

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Studies on the effect of increased descriptive representation on political participation have yielded mixed results. This research explores the relationship between descriptive representation and political participation. Specifically, we are interested in understanding how the race and gender of political representatives affect electorate participation. We conduct a unique survey experiment where participants receive communication from a political representative. The treatment conditions varied based on representative race (black, white) and gender (man, woman). We hypothesized that participants who receive correspondence from a representative of the same gender and race as themselves (i.e., in-group) will be more likely to participate than a participant …

The Future Of Human Trafficking Legislation: A Policy Analysis, Zoe E. Hunt Jan 2023

The Future Of Human Trafficking Legislation: A Policy Analysis, Zoe E. Hunt

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Current legislation and policies are not effective enough to fight human trafficking as it continues to change and evolve worldwide. Human trafficking is not just sex trafficking; labor trafficking, organ trafficking, people smuggling, and forced criminal activities. This evolving and changing global issue continues to grow into a highly profitable "business." Overseas, many countries struggle to handle this issue, and some countries do not handle it at all. The United States has a major human trafficking problem that will continue to worsen unless there is a change in the government. The U.S. Congress should be more focused on the growing …

Analyzing Insurgent Activity In The Cabo Delgado Province Of Mozambique, Alayna N. Stormer, Amanda Brotemarkle, Virginia Mcdaniel

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

Al-Sunna Wa Jama’a (ASWJ), a violent Islamic Insurgency within the Cabo Delgado province of Mozambique, is likely to continue to exercise control and pose a strategic threat to United States (US) interests and possessions in the region due to violence, various illegal activities, and exploitation of regional humanitarian crises. Based on trend analysis, it is likely that these activities will contribute to an overall continuation of ASWJ’s influence. We also considered the true ideological nature of ASWJ and whether or not they have ties to other well known terrorist organizations. We utilized two methods, indicator analysis and strategy assessment, our …

The Racial Impact Of Covid-19 On Asian Americans' Mental Health, Chenchen Cui Apr 2022

The Racial Impact Of Covid-19 On Asian Americans' Mental Health, Chenchen Cui

Academic Festival

The emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), took the world by surprise with its alarming rate of spread and devastating consequences. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people faced serious challenges, including the deteriorating health of infected loved ones, economic struggles, and political and social unrest. The origin of the first reported cases of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, coupled with racial references to the virus as the “Chinese virus” or “Kung Flu,” fueled the rise of anti-Asian sentiment and xenophobia in the United States. Anger, fear, and social media influence have …

The Deconstruction Of The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Emmalyn Walenda Apr 2022

The Deconstruction Of The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Emmalyn Walenda

Academic Festival

The school-to-prison pipeline has become a prominent social phenomenon in U.S. school systems. Students of all ages are being forced out of educational facilities by the schools’ regulations and rules. The juvenile justice system continues to see school-age children walk through their doors, as “exclusionary disciplinary systems in schools disrupt children’s education and increase the likelihood that affected students will end up in the criminal justice system” (Potera, 2021, p. 16).

Susceptibility To Phishing And Victims’ Views Of Love, Romance And Red Flags: Economic And Psychological Coercion In Virtual Space, Anna Hart Apr 2022

Susceptibility To Phishing And Victims’ Views Of Love, Romance And Red Flags: Economic And Psychological Coercion In Virtual Space, Anna Hart

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Romance scams have increased 50% since 2019 and have cost victims about $304 million dollars in the last year (Federal Trade Commission, 2/10/2021). Romance scams also cause emotional distress (Buchanan & Whitty, 2014; Cross, Dragiewicz & Richards, 2018), with distress increasing for lonely victims and those who also were deceived into giving money. There is very little research on how an individual’s definitions of love and knowledge about potential ‘red flags’ in relationships contribute to becoming a victim of romance scams and monetary loss due to these scams. This study addresses this gap.
