Do racial disparities exist in the Berrien County Criminal Justice System? Through an analysis of data from the Berrien County Jail, we will highlight any disparities pertaining to demographic variables––including racial/ethnic identity. Furthermore, we plan to establish our results on a community-applicable scale to aid in eliminating racial injustice.

Analyzing Insurgent Activity In The Cabo Delgado Province Of Mozambique, Alayna N. Stormer, Amanda Brotemarkle, Virginia Mcdaniel
Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current
Al-Sunna Wa Jama’a (ASWJ), a violent Islamic Insurgency within the Cabo Delgado province of Mozambique, is likely to continue to exercise control and pose a strategic threat to United States (US) interests and possessions in the region due to violence, various illegal activities, and exploitation of regional humanitarian crises. Based on trend analysis, it is likely that these activities will contribute to an overall continuation of ASWJ’s influence. We also considered the true ideological nature of ASWJ and whether or not they have ties to other well known terrorist organizations. We utilized two methods, indicator analysis and strategy assessment, our …

The Racial Impact Of Covid-19 On Asian Americans' Mental Health, Chenchen Cui
The Racial Impact Of Covid-19 On Asian Americans' Mental Health, Chenchen Cui
Academic Festival
The emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), took the world by surprise with its alarming rate of spread and devastating consequences. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people faced serious challenges, including the deteriorating health of infected loved ones, economic struggles, and political and social unrest. The origin of the first reported cases of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, coupled with racial references to the virus as the “Chinese virus” or “Kung Flu,” fueled the rise of anti-Asian sentiment and xenophobia in the United States. Anger, fear, and social media influence have …
The Deconstruction Of The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Emmalyn Walenda
The Deconstruction Of The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Emmalyn Walenda
Academic Festival
The school-to-prison pipeline has become a prominent social phenomenon in U.S. school systems. Students of all ages are being forced out of educational facilities by the schools’ regulations and rules. The juvenile justice system continues to see school-age children walk through their doors, as “exclusionary disciplinary systems in schools disrupt children’s education and increase the likelihood that affected students will end up in the criminal justice system” (Potera, 2021, p. 16).
Susceptibility To Phishing And Victims’ Views Of Love, Romance And Red Flags: Economic And Psychological Coercion In Virtual Space, Anna Hart
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
Romance scams have increased 50% since 2019 and have cost victims about $304 million dollars in the last year (Federal Trade Commission, 2/10/2021). Romance scams also cause emotional distress (Buchanan & Whitty, 2014; Cross, Dragiewicz & Richards, 2018), with distress increasing for lonely victims and those who also were deceived into giving money. There is very little research on how an individual’s definitions of love and knowledge about potential ‘red flags’ in relationships contribute to becoming a victim of romance scams and monetary loss due to these scams. This study addresses this gap.

Scholar Week 2016 - present
Online presentation: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7795013240
Zoom Room ID: 779 501 3240
The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to discover how colleges and universities impact the moral development of their undergraduate school of business students through the method by which they teach ethics in their curricula. To address the stated problem of understanding the impact of ethics and its effect on the moral development of students, the research question that drove this study involved discovering if there was a relationship between the ethical decisions undergraduate college business students make (like deciding whether to cheat on exams and/or assignments) and the way …
Rethinking Recidivism, Grace Higbie, Beck Hansman, Michael Willner, Charlie O'Gorman
Rethinking Recidivism, Grace Higbie, Beck Hansman, Michael Willner, Charlie O'Gorman
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
Prisons are as old as civilization, yet the way incarceration looks has changed over time. One of the biggest changes is the increase of the number of people in prison, influenced significantly by the long-term rise in recidivism, or the tendency for a convicted criminal to reoffend and be re-imprisoned for a similar crime. If more people cycle in and out of the system, then prison populations rise which strains the entire justice system. This paper seeks to address recidivism in two countries with differing rates and approaches to imprisonment: the United States and Norway. We hope to provide actionable …

Clippers & Cops And Go Pro In Life, Tyrone J. Dennis
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference
Clippers and cops is an organization I (Detective Tyrone Dennis) started in March of 2018 where APD officers actually go into our own communities to speak to civilians about our own experiences; good and bad.
Meeting at local barber shops, Rec centers, to local restaurants, “Clippers and cops” is a relaxed round table discussion that gives every day people a neutral and safe platform for their voices to be heard without judgement, And a place to have an open dialogue about the adversity and hot button issues that have caused such disparity between these 2 conflicting worlds.
Today young people …

Systemic racism continues to be prevalent in our society today, especially with the exponential rate of Asian Americans experiencing racial discrimination and microaggressions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since post COVID-19, members of the Asians and Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) community are more susceptible to experience violence, such as serious physical injuries or death. Misinformation from political leaders are a contributing factor for the anti-Asian hate crimes and violence post COVID-19. This problem is extensive where members of the AAPI community are now concerned for their own overall safety and physical well-being. A workshop will incorporate an overview of …

Criminogenic Risk Factors And Mental Illness: An Examination Of The 2010 Kelly Elementary School Shooter, Brendan Liam O'Rourke, Gordon A. Crews
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose of this presentation is to examine school violence perpetrator Mr. Brendan Liam O'Rourke and his involvement in the Kelly Elementary School playground shooting in Carlsbad, California, on October 8, 2010.
Most people suffering from mental illness are not violent, unless they are abusing substances or their mental illness is untreated (i.e., never diagnosed or not taking their medication because they do not think they need them, thus anosognosia).
This mentally ill offender, suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, will be examined through the lens of "8 Criminogenic Risk Factors". Relying upon the work of Andrews et al., Osher …

Student Government National Network, Alexander Chiarelott
Honors Projects
My project is the creation and utilization of the Student Government National Network. This is a joint effort between many student leaders from around the country, but the idea for it was started by me and the former BGSU USG President Harrison Carter. My specific role in the development phase of this organization has been to bring in the student leaders in my network, as well as to consider the long-term marketing and financial routes we want the organization to take. I will be developing the marketing and economic plans for this organization, which have a major bearing on how …
