Decolonizing Databases: A Scalable Critical Pedagogy Activity, Emery Shriver, Lori Dubois
New England Library Instruction Group
Inspired by Safiya Umoja Noble’s Algorithms of Oppression, essays and lesson plans in Critical Library Pedagogy (Nicole Pagowsky and Kelly McElroy, eds.), and the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, this presentation described a critical pedagogy activity that interrogates systems of oppression in library research tools and challenges students to reflect on the emotional aspects of their research experience. We discussed how we have modified the activity for different courses and disciplines, classroom settings, and class session lengths. This activity is suitable for librarians who are beginning to consider how to incorporate critical pedagogy into their teaching.
Next Steps For Oer/Ztc Degrees, Una Daly, Ann Fiddler
Next Steps For Oer/Ztc Degrees, Una Daly, Ann Fiddler
Northeast Regional OER Summit
Achieving the Dream launched the largest OER Degree initiative in 2016 awarding grants to 38 community colleges in 13 states. While in 2017, California state launched its Zero-Textbook-Cost Degree program awarding 33 community colleges planning and/or implementation grants to develop degree pathways where all textbook costs were eliminated. Two California colleges participated in both programs.
Although both programs were similarly focused on expanding access through cost reduction for students and improving time to completion, the program requirements differed in significant ways. The time allotted to complete the work, course material requirements, data collection, and other support mechanisms varied.

In October 2016, the Diversity Council of Libraries and Educational Technologies produced book displays in Carrier and Rose Libraries that focused on "Understanding Black Lives Matter." The council wanted to provide information on this social movement within the context of national history and racial identity. A list of books that covered topic areas of criminal justice, Jim Crow, racism, and the Black experience - among others - was generated, along with two informational placards. One placard placed the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement within historical and social context, while the other placard offered a preemptive response to the question "Why …
Silenced Voices: Remedying The Historical Suppression Of Felons And The Black Vote, Isabel Tayag
Silenced Voices: Remedying The Historical Suppression Of Felons And The Black Vote, Isabel Tayag
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
The disenfranchisement of felons in the United States evolved from a historical precedent brought to the Americas during colonization. Our country adopted the political philosophy that shaped criminal voting laws around the country—criminals are unable to govern themselves and therefore unable to govern a country; their participation in our government would be danger to the purity of the ballot box. With rising racial tensions after Reconstruction, preserving the purity of the ballot box became a preservation of the white vote. This paper argues that felon disenfranchisement became a tool to further suppress African American after poll taxes, literacy tests, and …

Confined by its Schedule I classification, advocates of medical marijuana urge the government to reclassify the substance. Reclassification of medical marijuana sanctions broader exploration of both its benefits and ramifications.

Socioeconomic Influences On Property Crime Rates: A Study In Virginia's Counties, Mary Passley
Student Scholar Showcase
Most research on factors and causes of crime, whether property or violent crime, focuses on individuals’ behavior or their surrounding environment. In this research, I explore the idea of socioeconomic factors correlated to property crime. I conducted a retrospective design to fully explore United States Census data and crime data gathered by the Bureau of Justice Statistics to discover statistically significant variables connected to property crime. Significant findings were shown by average people per house and retail sales per capita in all counties. Additional significant findings were percent employment change and percent with high school degree or higher in low …

Organizational Power And Organizational Tolerance Of Sexual Harassment: The Effects On Bystanders In The Military, Matthew Mcconnell
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Sexual harassment and its negative effects have become a severe problem in the military. According to a RAND Military Workplace Study (2014), in a year an estimate 116,600 members reported being sexually harassed. Though critically important, most research to date has focused on the victims of sexual harassment to the exclusion of examining the effect of sexual harassment on those people observing the harassment. This study will focus on reviewing the consequences of observing sexual harassments on bystander emotional well-being and their attitudes and behavioral tendencies toward the organization. We will particularly focus on the influence of sexual harassment occurring …
Analyzing Somali Piracy Prosecutions, Molly Parent
Analyzing Somali Piracy Prosecutions, Molly Parent
SURE (Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience)
•From 2001-2010 the number of piracy incidents spiked. Somali piracy differs from other forms of piracy because it has a distinct modus operandi. Whereas most piracy is theft, Somali attacks focus primarily on capturing vessels and holding them for ransom. •The vessel attacks occur primarily in the high seas, outside the territorial jurisdiction of any one nation. Therefore, Somali piracy cases have been heard in various courts around the world. Many cases have been prosecuted in Kenya, Seychelles, the Netherlands, as well as many other countries around the world. •This analysis examines the nature of these prosecutions, and whether there …
