A Survey Of Interdisciplinary Differences In Attitudes And Morale Within A Psychiatric Hospital, Brian F. Hoffman, Valerie P. Hans Jan 1985

A Survey Of Interdisciplinary Differences In Attitudes And Morale Within A Psychiatric Hospital, Brian F. Hoffman, Valerie P. Hans

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

It is clear from a number of research studies that staff attitudes and morale in psychiatric hospitals are influenced by diverse factors. Although staff morale has been studied in several health and human service organizations, there have been few systematic studies of the professional staff in a psychiatric hospital. In particular, little attention has been paid to the effect staff members’ disciplinary affiliations have on their morale and attitudes. The effects of staff members’ dual allegiances (to their discipline and to their interdisciplinary unit) have also not been examined. Conflict may develop in psychiatric hospitals because members of different disciplines …

The Mmpi : A Subscale (Ic) For The Identification Of Male Incest Offenders, Mary S. Dolan Jan 1985

The Mmpi : A Subscale (Ic) For The Identification Of Male Incest Offenders, Mary S. Dolan

Dissertations and Theses

The MMPI has been used extensively for the clinical assessment of deviancy among sexual offenders. In order to derive a diagnostic scale for the specific identification of male incest offenders, an item analysis, using MMPI data from offenders, compared MMPI data from a nonoffending control sample. The item analysis results were cross validated with MMPI data from a separate sample of incest offenders. Eleven MMPI items were found to be critical in discriminating male incest offenders from nonoffenders, and these items comprise the Ic experimental scale. On the basis of the Ic scale, male incest offenders evidence characterological disturbances in …

A Comparison Of Sexual And Physical Assault Court Cases Following The Elimination Of Rape From The Criminal Code Of Canada, Suresh K. Sahjpaul

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of the present study was to determine if the change in the Criminal Code which replaced the old offence of “rape” with the new offence of “sexual assault” had the desired effect of having sexual assault treated similar to physical assault. For this evaluation, five sexual assault cases and 22 physical assault cases were compared on the severity of the charge, the nature of the courtroom process and on the conviction and sentencing patterns. In addition, reporting, founding, clearing and charging rates before and after the new law were statistically compared.

Findings indicated that both sexual and physical …

Psychometric Properties Of The Group Process Questionnaire, Lucia Igou Eakins Jan 1983

Psychometric Properties Of The Group Process Questionnaire, Lucia Igou Eakins

Dissertations and Theses

The Group Process Questionnaire (GPQ), a 55-item rating scale, was developed by Richard Wollert in 1981 to assess perceptions of the frequency of processes occurring in self-help groups (SHGs). The GPQ was first employed by Wollert, Eakins, and Dixon (Note 1) as the primary data collection instrument in an ongoing investigation of urban SHGs. This investigation is one of a small number of empirical studies which have attempted to specify the range of SHG activities. Due to the relatively recent emergence of SHGs as topics of research, and the unique obstacles to research presented by the independent character of these …

Effect Of Informational Posting And Employee Inspection On Safety Hazard Reduction In A Retail Drug Store, Craig A. Berger Dec 1981

Effect Of Informational Posting And Employee Inspection On Safety Hazard Reduction In A Retail Drug Store, Craig A. Berger

Masters Theses

Undesired safety conditions were operationally defined for a large retail drug store. The recording of unsafe conditions were conducted for two different employee shifts for ten weeks. A multiple baseline design (ABC-ACB) was used in which three conditions were introduced: (a) baseline, (b) public posting of a safety performance chart, and (c) individual employee inspections. Results indicated that the frequency of safety hazards declined 23% from baseline for the public post-condition and declined 44% for the employee inspection condition (averaged across both shifts). An advanced analysis of variance indicated significant mean differences (p < .01) between baseline and employee inspection for both shifts. An additional measure was taken correlating photograph ratings by employees on a safety dimension and an attractiveness dimension. The coefficient of correlation was statistically significant (r = .76; p <.05). The results indicate that a training program involving employee inspections may be an effective way of reducing undesirable safety conditions.

Mental Health Services For Ontario Correctional Clients, Benjamin Clyde Hoffman Jan 1981

Mental Health Services For Ontario Correctional Clients, Benjamin Clyde Hoffman

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Human services and program evaluation literature suggests that correctional policy must be formulated in the context of an Empirical Penology that begins with the data of corrections (Conrad, 1973; Newman and Price, 1977; Law Reform Commission of Canada, 1976). The Ontario Ministry of Correctional Services is currently involved in policy discussions concerning the future provision of mental health service to its clients. As part of its discussions, a Ministry Task Force is examining mental health service delivery models. However, standardized descriptive data of the existing client target population and the current service are not available. Comprehensive service evaluation are also …

Program Evaluation Of The Kitchener-Waterloo Diversion Programme, Edward Daniel Dubas Jan 1981

Program Evaluation Of The Kitchener-Waterloo Diversion Programme, Edward Daniel Dubas

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The research describes the operation of the Kitchener-Waterloo Diversion Program and by using the Gibbon, Lebowitz and Blake (1976) evaluation model the program was evaluated relative to its six objectives. Diversion is defined as any pre-trial, post-charge intervention model which deals with juvenile charges outside the traditional juvenile justice systems (Solicitor General of Canada, 1978).

Data were collected from systematic observations of the diversion meetings, interviews with participants, victims and lawyers regarding their perceptions of diversion, and the examination of police, court and diversion records.

Results indicate that the eligibility criteria were being met and that the intended target population …

Evaluation Of A Juvenile Diversion Program: Using Multiple Lines Of Evidence, Mark W. Lipsey, David S. Cordray, Dale E. Berger Jan 1981

Evaluation Of A Juvenile Diversion Program: Using Multiple Lines Of Evidence, Mark W. Lipsey, David S. Cordray, Dale E. Berger

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The evaluation of a juvenile diversion program was approached through the development of multiple lines of evidence bearing on each of the two major program goals: providing a community-based alternative for arrested juveniles who otherwise would have been referred to the juvenile justice system and reducing juvenile delinquency. Convergent results from various measures, research designs, and data stratifications indicated that the program had little success in decreasing referrals to the juvenile justice system but produced a positive delinquency reduction effect (concentrated among less serious offenders). These results are discussed in terms of (1) their significance for the diversion program and …
