This report is intended to examine the ecological changes due to mixing in shallow water bodies. Physical, chemical, and biological changes are reported in literature. A literature search revealed the range of mixing nodes or processes. Assessment of ecological changes due to mixing by boating activities had been evaluated in a research project supported by the environmental Protection Agency and conducted at Florida Technological University. The examination of changes due to mechanical mixing on lake ecology simulated in fifty-five gallon drums indicated the sensitivity of such parameters as total Kjeldahl nitrogen, conductivity, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen. Properties and characteristics of colloidal systems are reviewed with a discussion of colloid systems to be found in natural and wastewaters. Current electric and magnetic field theory are reviewed and summarized to provide practical application of the theory to engineering problems in the environmental field. Literature of colloidal reactions to electrical and magnetic fields is discussed and reviewed to ascertain areas of potential application of electric and magnetic phenomena to natural and wastewater treatment systems having objectionable colloid suspensions. On December 29, 1970, the President signed into law the Williams-Steiger Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) of 1970, which became effective April 28, 1971. The purpose of this act is to assure safe and healthful working conditions for the nation's wage earners. The law provides that each employer has the basic duty to furnish his employees a place of employment which is safe from recognized hazards that cause death or serious physical harm. National ambient air quality standards for particulate matter have been promulgated since April, 1971. While effects of stationary sources on these standards have been examined, little research has been accomplished on the effects of fugitive particulate. This thesis examines the environmental impact of a fugitive dust source, Highway Construction. Using the High-Volume reference method for particulate sampling, the effect of Highway construction was determined. An analysis of concentrations, distance influences, meteorological influences, particle sizes and construction influences is presented. The data obtained from this study indicates the major influence of concentrations is a function of distance and sampling height. Particle …

There is new evidence that global earth resources satellite net will be practical. This paper weighs recent advances in remote sensing to pinpoint the dominant constraints. The data and sensor systems interfacing requirements are critically reviewed. It is shown that conventional optics constraints can be relaxed, with the newer systems, based on multi-spectral imagery and statistical processing methods. The most powerful computational methods use algorithms based on a Gaussian assumption for the species vector in feature space, but biases in the imagery limit their efficiency. On Lake Eola, stormwater runoff has been identified as a major source of pollution. Other lakes in Central Florida are experiencing similar decay due to stormwater runoff. A device has been examined for diversion of the initial flows to treatment before discharge into the lake. A graphical aid was developed to select the proper volume required for the device and was applied to a Lake Eola existing collection basin. The USPHS limits color in water to 15 color units. However, it is desirable to remove all the color. Color in surface water is mainly due to humic substances and was found in concentrations varying up to 450 color units. This paper is a report on a study of the management of solid wastes at Florida Technological University (FTU). This study endeavors to provide a basis for effective planning for disposal of FTU's solid wastes, both in the next few years and at the time of maximum FTU population. Essentially, the study affirms that the present system of refuse collection by a private contractor is the best method of disposal, with the possibility that recycling of mixed paper may become feasible at some future time.

Every advance in the transformation of heat energy into mechanical energy has involved a noise problem, and in general it increases with the power production. The jet airplane is a good example: the large-scale turbulence of the exhaust gases in the jet forms an unusually intense source of sound the control of which is quite difficult. The purpose of this research paper was to translate a Computer Model (SIGART), capable of simulating a progressive traffic signal lights system, from Burroughs B5500 FORTRAN II to the IBM 360 FORTRAN IV computer language, to outline the program algorithm, to set up detailed program documentation and to validate this model by applying practical system data. Expansion of the SIGART program by addition of an option to produce a time space plot of the output data utilizing a Calcomp plotter was also to be considered.

Methods of reusing/recycling the more than 250 million automobile and truck tires which are worn out each year were investigated. The existing methods of reusing tires account for about 30 percent of the volume of scrap tires generated each year. These methods are, Retreading, Reclaiming (by reducing to ground up rubber and fiber), and Tire Splitting (stamp items out of sidewall and tread areas). Several possibilities for reusing/recycling the unused 70 percent were discovered. The major problem facing air transportation for the next decade is aircraft noise. The noise level due to the operation of large jet aircraft has created a very serious annoyance problem to the people living near of adjacent to jet airports. The noise problem has developed both for take-off and landing operations of these aircraft with take -off noise causing the greatest annoyance factor. A mathematical model is presented for the problem of determining the two-dimensional temperature distribution resulting from the discharge of a heated effluent into a shallow, quiescent receptacle. The physical model of the problem is the two-dimensional jet augmented by an imposed condition of viscous drag due to bottom friction effects. By virtue of the assumption that the physical properties of the effluent are independent of temperature over the operational temperature range of the plume, the analysis separates the total problem into a flow problem and a temperature problem. Solution of the temperature distribution is accomplished both analytically and numerically. Analytically, …

The report describes an alternative to the use of septic tanks for invidual dwellings. The major problems confronting the larger wastewater treatment plants (0.012 to 10 million gallons per day) in central Florida are also discussed. Solutions in this report are for individual and multi-unit dwelling treatment systems (to 0.06 MGD). these units can provide 90% biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and suspended solids (SS) removal in accord with new state and county regulations. A comparison of the large versus the small plants reveals that small innovative plants, though more expensive, are more environmentally sound than the poorly operated large facilities. …

This report is the result of investigation of the feasibility of increasing the use of autamatic controls at the Florida Technological University Wastewater Treatment Plant. This investigation was to include a literature search and visits to wastewater treatment plants. During the writers course of study, he was privileged to make a series of tests of a residual chlorine analyzer which was made in the school shop. Atmospheric pollution in some degree has been around since time began. In recent times it has reached levels in some areas which proved to be harmful to man's health. A brief history review of these occurrences is presented. Laws have been enacted to combat this threat. A brief review of these laws is presented. Instruments for remote sensing of polluting sources are being developed to monitor ambient air quality and aid in enforcing these laws. A review of the techniques employed and the present state of the art is explored. Available instruments are presented in section III-5.
