The Logic Of Objects, David B. Eichelberger Jan 2010

The Logic Of Objects, David B. Eichelberger

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

The human mind assimilates information and experiences quickly and constantly, and is aided by mental systems that we rely on to function. We classify the input of our lives with extreme efficiency. Our notions about the things we encounter in the world are learned from past experiences, and these expectations help us file the data of our lives. My work is composed to create pause. I am interested in slowing down the processes of assimilation by manipulating our expectations, and extending events measured in microseconds into saturated and engaging experiences. Functional qualities, visual rhythms, and exaggerated proportions are some of …

Response To Rice, Kofi Agawu Jan 2010

Response To Rice, Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

Timothy Rice is concerned that ethnomusicology—field, discipline, area of study, constellation of diverse musico-intellectual pursuits—has some “serious problems.” It seems that we have either not been reading each other’s work, or not engaging with it sufficiently. Opportunities to develop some “theoretical muscle” have been missed. Specifically, some seventeen articles broaching the favorite theme of music and identity published in this journal between 1982 and 2005 failed to proceed in cumulative fashion. Rice wants to see ethnomusicology “grow in intellectual and explanatory power,” but this will not happen if subsequent writers refuse to engage their predecessors at a theoretical level. A …

I read Ralf Dahm's article "Finding Alzheimer's Disease" (March-April) with interest for two reasons. First, as a cognitive neuroscientist, I have studied the effect of early-stage Alzheimer's disease on memory and on the appreciation of music and art. In addition, I am a member of a community chorus here in Pennsylvania, the Susquehanna Valley Chorale, which recently commissioned and premiered a choral work on the topic of the ailment, called Alzheimer's Stories.

Passing The Torch: An Interview With Andi Beckendorf And A Tribute To Her Service To The Isb, Jeremy C. Baguyos

Music Faculty Publications

Andi Beckendorf was appointed Associate Editor of Bass World in 2001 and worked alongside the celebrated Editor at that time, Joelle Morton. In 2005, Andi was tapped to assume the post of Editor, and for the past five years the readership has benefited from her professionalism, her precise editing, her astute content management, and her steady and watchful pursuit of the highest possible standards and values of the ISB and its journal. This issue of Bass World will be the first without Andi Beckendorf at the helm, but we are not going to bid farewell. Instead, we are going to …

I first joined the ISB as a student member at the urging of Charles Hoag, one of my bass teachers when I was growing up in Kansas. For me, the most important benefit of TSB membership was the ISB's journal. Back in those days when the primary tools for research were card catalogs and the RILM Abstracts, I couldn't just do a Google search on the keywords "double bass" to learn more about my instrument and other bassists. The journal of the International Society of Bassists, presently titled Bass World, was my only link to the national and international double …
