Effects Of Physical Activity On Self-Efficacy Of Patients With Bronchial Asthma, Carolin Schulze
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Introduction: Due to higher exposures to fine dust, increased smoking and prevalence of obesity and stress, an increase in the diagnosis of bronchial asthma can be expected, which requires adequate, scientifically tested, alternative therapy methods. The current study investigated the effects of regular physical training on general and disease-specific self-efficacy. Materials and Methods: Overall 82 participants with mild to moderate medicated asthma (63% female, mean age = 41.88 ± 10.43 years) took part in the study. They were randomly divided into three groups: (1) no intervention, (2) progressive muscle relaxation and (3) physical activity intervention. Intervention lasted ten weeks with …

Relative Age Effect At Men’S Volleyball World Championships Over Time, Marcin Śliwa, Mariusz Buszta, Jerzy Sadowski
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Introduction: Relative age effect (RAE) in sport is extensively described in the literature. However, there is scarcity of data on how to avoid problems in the talent identification process and, consequently, how to avoid dropping out or losing a potential volleyball talent. The aim of the study was to carry out a retrospective analysis of RAE at Men’s U-19 and U-21 World Championships as well as Men’s World Championships over the last 12 years and to investigate possible differences in quarterly age distribution depending on anthropometric features, geographical regions the teams under study came from as well as their performance …

Impact Of Frailty On Patient Morbidity And Outcomes Following Surgery For Urolithiasis: A Nsqip Analysis, David Fu, Kaeli Samson, Bryant Van Leeuwen, Andrew J. Blazek, Andrew Christiansen
Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Background: Kidney stones are prevalent, and surgical treatment is based on multiple factors. Frailty is the collective decline of organ systems that can lead to adverse events and is considered prior to surgery for risk-benefit analysis. The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) utilizes risk-adjusted data to monitor outcomes, provide quality benchmarks, and decrease complications. The impact of frailty with the modified 5-item frailty index has not previously been evaluated for patients undergoing urolithiasis procedures.
Methods: Data was collected from 1329 patients who underwent surgery for urolithiasis. The primary outcome was 30-day all-cause morbidity. Associations between variables, including those …

The Effectiveness Of Individual And Group Canine-Assisted Interventions In Improving Mental Health In Higher Education Students, Karen Manville, Mark Coulson, Gemma Reynolds
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
The main aim of this study was to identify whether the social environment of canine-assisted intervention (CAI) influenced the beneficial effects on higher education (HE) students’ mental health. A second aim explored whether attachment style predicted the effect of being part of a CAI group. Sixty-seven participants interacted with a canine for two minutes, either individually, as part of a pair, or as a trio. Anxiety, stress, depression, and well-being were measured pre and post intervention, alongside attachment style. The results found no difference in the effectiveness of CAI when taking part individually, in pairs, or in a trio, meaning …

Mortality And Comorbidities Associated With Covid-19 Infection In Psychiatric Patients From A State Hospital, Nicole Ann E. Villa, Matthew Driben, Regina Reed, Maria Yee, Eduardo Espiridion
Transformative Medicine (T-Med)
Introduction: Coronavirus (COVID-19) infection has spread globally and resulted in more than one million deaths in the US as of July 2023, where it has been more severe in psychiatric wards. State hospitals are a particularly transmissible location for COVID-19, and the medications that psychiatric patients typically utilize may contribute to the incidence of comorbidities including obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Studies have found that patients with preexisting mental health disorders and comorbidities tend to have worse COVID-19 outcomes. Thus, we examine the mortality and comorbidity rate of patients, and discuss how psychiatric medications may contribute to the risk of …
