Immediate Vs Delayed Feedback In A Progressive Musculoskeletal E-Module Case For Clinical Reasoning Development, Megan Frazee, Krista Gipson, Elizabeth Lyden, Stephanie Langel

Innovations in Health Sciences Education Journal

Introduction: Clinical reasoning (CR) skills are essential when preparing healthcare students to transition to clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of feedback timing within a case-based learning (CBL) e-module. The secondary aim was to examine the longitudinal impact on student performance within a standardized patient (SP) simulation and their overall course grade at the end of the semester.

Review of Literature: Feedback is a powerful teaching method to improve student learning. However, there are highly conflicting results regarding the best frequency and timing of feedback. This may be influenced by the level of the …

Impact Of Frailty On Patient Morbidity And Outcomes Following Surgery For Urolithiasis: A Nsqip Analysis, David Fu, Kaeli Samson, Bryant Van Leeuwen, Andrew J. Blazek, Andrew Christiansen

Graduate Medical Education Research Journal

Background: Kidney stones are prevalent, and surgical treatment is based on multiple factors. Frailty is the collective decline of organ systems that can lead to adverse events and is considered prior to surgery for risk-benefit analysis. The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) utilizes risk-adjusted data to monitor outcomes, provide quality benchmarks, and decrease complications. The impact of frailty with the modified 5-item frailty index has not previously been evaluated for patients undergoing urolithiasis procedures.

Methods: Data was collected from 1329 patients who underwent surgery for urolithiasis. The primary outcome was 30-day all-cause morbidity. Associations between variables, including those …

Background: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a devastating complication of cirrhosis that increases mortality. Many patients do not receive guideline recommended HE treatment.

Our aim is to evaluate trends in HE treatment over time, variables associated with receiving treatment, and outcomes based on the type of treatment received.

Methods: Retrospective single-center cohort study of hospitalized patients with HE from July 2012 – June 2022. HE treatment was defined as receiving lactulose, rifaximin, or combination therapy.

Results: A total of 1,683 unique patients were included, 72% of patients received HE treatment. Fewer HE patients received any treatment in 2022 (65.9%) compared to …

In recent decades, obesity rates have increased in the United States, raising significant health and societal concerns, especially in terms of military readiness. The ever-rising rates of weight-related health obstacles present a critical national security issue as it impacts the effectiveness of recruitment. This literature review aims to analyze how obesity impacts military recruitment and readiness to serve while utilizing the socio-ecological model to help determine gaps in evidence. Data was drawn from Embase, PubMed, and PsychInfo. Inclusion criteria consisted of academic journals and reports from government and non-profit organizations written in English. Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects: College of Nursing

Purpose

Heart failure is the leading cause of hospital admissions among adults over 65 years old and lack of patient knowledge regarding the self-management of heart failure is a key factor in rising readmission rates. This project enhances inpatient heart failure education using a laminated heart failure zone tool handout to guide heart failure education. The intent was to increase patients’ confidence regarding heart failure self-management and positively impact patients’ knowledge regarding the management of heart failure.

Materials and Methods

The process included identifying hospitalized patients who had been flagged as a heart failure core measure or had been identified …
