Hyperbaric Oxygen Inhibits Stimulus-Induced Pro-Inflammatory Cytokine Synthesis By Human Blood-Derived Monocyte-Macrophages, Lisa Minter, R.M. Benson, B.A. Osborne, E.V. Granowitz
Lisa Minter
Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) is 100% oxygen administered at elevated atmospheric pressure to patients with inflammatory diseases. We developed an in vitro model to investigate the effects of HBO on stimulus-induced proinflammatory cytokine transcription and translation. Human blood-derived monocyte-macrophages were stimulated before being transferred to an HBO chamber where they were incubated at 97·9% O2, 2·1% CO2, 2·4 atmospheres absolute, 37°C. Controls were maintained in the same warm room at normoxia at sea level, hyperoxia or increased pressure alone. A 90-min HBO exposure inhibited IL-1β synthesized in response to lipopolysaccharide by 23%, lipid A by 45%, phytohaemagglutinin A (PHA) by 68%, …

Stride length, stride frequency and power output are all factors influencing locomotor performance. Here, we first test whether mass-specific power output limits climbing performance in two species of geckos (Hemidactylus garnoti and Gekko gecko) by adding external loads to their bodies. We then test whether body size has a negative effect on mass-specific power output. Finally, we test whether loading affects kinematics in both gecko species. Lizards were induced to run vertically on a smooth wooden surface with loads of 0-200% of body mass (BM) in H. garnoti and 0-100% BM in G. gecko. For each stride, we calculated angular …
Host Species Affects Herbivory, Pollination, And Reproduction In Experiments With Parasitic Castilleja, Lynn Adler
Host Species Affects Herbivory, Pollination, And Reproduction In Experiments With Parasitic Castilleja, Lynn Adler

The relative performance of a parasitic plant on different host species will depend on both direct and indirect effects of hosts on parasite interactions with mutualists and antagonists. Host species could affect parasite interactions with both herbivores and pollinators due to the uptake of defensive compounds and nutrients. However, the effects of different host species on parasitic plants have not been experimentally tested in the field. I determined the effect of two native host species, an alkaloid-producing, nitrogen-fixing lupine and non-alkaloid, non-nitrogen-fixing grass, on herbivory, pollination, and reproduction of the hemiparasitic plant Indian paintbrush (Castilleja indivisa). Within this experiment, I …

The Role Of The Lissencephaly Protein Pac1 During Nuclear Migration In Budding Yeast, Wei-Lih Lee, J. R. Oberle, J. A. Cooper

During mitosis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the mitotic spindle moves into the mother–bud neck via dynein-dependent sliding of cytoplasmic microtubules along the cortex of the bud. Here we show that Pac1, the yeast homologue of the human lissencephaly protein LIS1, plays a key role in this process. First, genetic interactions placed Pac1 in the dynein/dynactin pathway. Second, cells lacking Pac1 failed to display microtubule sliding in the bud, resulting in defective mitotic spindle movement and nuclear segregation. Third, Pac1 localized to the plus ends (distal tips) of cytoplasmic microtubules in the bud. This localization did not depend on the dynein heavy …

The Effects Of Gape Angle And Bite Point On Bite Force In Bats, Elizabeth R. Dumont, Anthony Herrel
The Effects Of Gape Angle And Bite Point On Bite Force In Bats, Elizabeth R. Dumont, Anthony Herrel
Biology Department Faculty Publication Series
Models of mammalian mastication predict that bite force is affected by both the degree of mouth opening (gape angle) and the point along the tooth row at which force is transferred to a food item (bite point). Despite the widespread use of these models in comparative analyses, experimental data documenting bite force in non-human mammals are extremely limited. The goal of this study is to document variation in non-stimulated bite force associated with change in gape angle and bite point in a broad range of species. We focus on plant-visiting bats because they exhibit a relatively primitive cranial morphology and …
