Biodiversity Status In Ethiopia And Challenges, Azamal Husen, V.K. Mishra, Kamal Semwal, Dinesh Kumar
Prof. Azamal Husen
Ethiopia is rich in faunal, floral and microbial diversity. Conservation paradigms, practices and policies have been variably successful. Traditional approaches in conservation have evolved awareness about biodiversity conservation. Climate change poses unknown fear and challenge to biodiversity conservation in the 21st century. There is urgent need of mapping of biodiversity in various environments, inventorization, monitoring of biodiversity, and global data sharing. Conservation of genetic resources will assist in future genetic improvement of crop plants and livestocks. Bioprospecting-value addition to biodiversity will provide economic gain for the country. Necessary measures need to be initiated to safeguard the germplasms against potential threat …

Pesticide Residue Determination In Shahr-E-Rey Tomatoes Using Quechers Method, Amin Mousavi Khaneghah Mr
Amin Mousavi Khaneghah
In this study, pesticide residues in tomato products from Shahr-e-Rey farms were measured and investigated by QuEChERS modified method. This method was on the base of the sample preparation in few steps and high speed. Measurement of pesticide residues was carried out by gas chromatograph with electron capture detector. In this study, most of the pesticides showed a recovery in the range of 70% – 120%. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) for all pesticides were lower than 0.50 and 1.90 μg/kg respectively. chlorpyrifos was detected in studied samples at average concentration 3.22 μg/kg, which was lower …

Evaluation On Leaf Proline Amount In Three Bread Wheat Cultivars In Presence Of Two Fertilizers Containing Amino Acids In Drought Stress, Amin Mousavi Khaneghah Mr
Amin Mousavi Khaneghah
To study leaf proline amount in presence of two fertilizers containing amino acids in drought stress on three bread wheat cultivars, a research was conducted in Ardabil IAU Research Center in 2012. To achieve this, factorial experimental design based on completely randomized block design was used. Factor A in six conditions (normal, aminol forte and fosnutren, drought, drought + aminol forte, drought + fosnutren) and factor B included three wheat genotypes (Kuhdasht, Cross Sabalan and Chmran). Results showed that there is a significant difference between The solutions on leave proline at 1 percent. Also, there was a significant difference between …

Primate teeth adapt to the physical properties of foods in a variety of ways including changes in occlusal morphology, enamel thickness, and overall size. We conducted a comparative study of extant primates to examine whether their teeth also adapt to foods through variation in the mechanical properties of the enamel. Nanoindentation techniques were used to map profiles of elastic modulus and hardness across tooth sections from the enamel-dentin junction to the outer enamel surface in a broad sample of primates including apes, Old World monkeys, New World monkeys, and lemurs. The measured data profiles feature considerable overlap among species, indicating …

Porous capsule irrigation is a modern adaptation of buried clay pot irrigation. Research in Brazil and Mexico has demonstrated its value in improving water use efficiency. Porous capsules are more easily integrated in an irrigation network than buried clay pots.
7 Alpha-Hydroxy-Beta-Sitosterol From Chisocheton Tomentosus Induces Apoptosis Via Dysregulation Of Cellular Bax/Bcl-2 Ratio And Cell Cycle Arrest By Downregulating Erk1/2 Activation, Noor Hasima Nagoor
Noor Hasima Nagoor
In continuation of our interest towards the elucidation of apoptotic pathways of cytotoxic phytocompounds, we have embarked upon a study on the anticancer effects of 7 alpha-hydroxy-beta-sitosterol (CT1), a rare natural phytosterol oxide isolated from Chisocheton tomentosus. CT1 was found to be cytotoxic on three different human tumor cell lines with minimal effects on normal cell controls, where cell viability levels were maintained >= 80% upon treatment. Our results showed that cell death in MCF-7 breast tumor cells was achieved through the induction of apoptosis via downregulation of the ERK1/2 signaling pathway. CT1 was also found to increase proapoptotic Bax …
Economic Impact Of Stable Flies (Diptera: Muscidae) On Cattle Production., David B. Taylor, Roger D. Moon, Darrell R. Mark
Economic Impact Of Stable Flies (Diptera: Muscidae) On Cattle Production., David B. Taylor, Roger D. Moon, Darrell R. Mark
David B Taylor
Stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L), are among the most damaging arthropod pests of cattle worldwide. The last estimate of their economic impact on US cattle production was published 20 years ago and placed losses at $608 million. Subsequently, several studies of effects of stable flies on beef cattle weight gain and feed efficiency have been published, and stable flies have become increasingly recognized as pests of cattle on pasture and range. We analyzed published studies and developed yield-loss functions to relate stable fly infestation levels to cattle productivity, and then estimated the economic impact of stable flies on cattle production …

This article claims that the United States is progressing well when examined through the racial and cultural diversity of its young people aged 29 and younger with earned doctorates. The data show that females in general and Asian and Black females in particular are earning very high proportions of doctorate degrees among individuals aged 29 and younger in 2009 and 2008. For example, of the 117,000 doctorate degrees (Ph.D., Ed.D., etc.) held by individuals in the US aged 25 - 29 in 2009, females accounted for 65,000 (55.6%), with Black females and Asian females accounting for 11.1% (13,000) and 10.3% …

Resampling-Based Information Criteria For Best-Subset Regression, Philip T. Reiss, Lei Huang, Joseph E. Cavanaugh, Amy Krain Roy

When a linear model is chosen by searching for the best subset among a set of candidate predictors, a fixed penalty such as that imposed by the Akaike information criterion may penalize model complexity inadequately, leading to biased model selection. We study resampling-based information criteria that aim to overcome this problem through improved estimation of the effective model dimension. The first proposed approach builds upon previous work on bootstrap-based model selection. We then propose a more novel approach based on cross-validation. Simulations and analyses of a functional neuroimaging data set illustrate the strong performance of our resampling-based methods, which are …
Inadequate Feeding Of Infant And Young Children In India: Lack Of Nutritional Information Or Food Affordability?, Nisha Malhotra
Inadequate Feeding Of Infant And Young Children In India: Lack Of Nutritional Information Or Food Affordability?, Nisha Malhotra
Nisha Malhotra
Why does child malnutrition persist in India? Amongst the fastest growing economies over the last two decades, India has struggled to make progress in the health of its children. In this article the author argues that the reason malnutrition persists is not limited to poverty or inadequate access to food; but that a lack of nutritional knowledge amongst families plays a very important role.
Scientific Abstract Objective: Despite a rapidly growing economy and rising income levels in India, improvements in child malnutrition have lagged. Data from the most recent National Family Health Survey reveal that the infant and young child …
