Folk Medicines In The Villages Of Ilıca District (Erzurum, Turkey), Ufuk Özgen, Yusuf Kaya, Peter Houghton

Turkish Journal of Biology

The villages of Ilıca District in Erzurum Province, Turkey, were surveyed in terms of plants and animals used traditionally for medicinal purposes. Plants were compiled according to their families, botanical names, local names, usages, and applications. A total of 70 plant species belonging to 29 families are used by village people to treat a wide range of complaints, such as hemorrhoids, urinary system infections, stomach disorders, respiratory diseases, skin diseases, rheumatism, and jaundice. In addition, 3 animal species are used for the treatment of some diseases. The collected data were compared with those formerly recorded.

Larval Parasitoids And Larval Diseases Of Malacosoma Neustria L. (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) Detected In Erzurum Province, Turkey, Hi̇kmet Özbek, Sali̇ha Çoruh

The larval parasitoids and larval diseases of Malacosoma neustria (L.) (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) in various host plants were investigated in Erzurum Province, Turkey, during 2004 and 2005. The larval parasitoids were reared in a laboratory, and a total of 29 parasitoid species were established in association with the larvae of M. neustria in the families Tachinidae (Diptera), Braconidae, Ichneumonidae, and Chalcidoidea (Hymenoptera). Of the 6 tachinid parasitoids, Pales pavida (Meigen) was the most prevalent species and accounted for 25% of the tachinid records. This paper presents the results of recent field surveys and provides new data on the spider fauna of Turkey. The following 9 taxa are new records for Turkey: Larinia chloris (Audouin, 1826); Macrothele sp.; Arctosa tbilisiensis Mcheidze, 1946; Pisaura consocia (O. This study was performed to determine the efficacies of Lavandula officinalis, Foeniculum vulgare, and Laurus nobilis essential oils on the control of Varroa destructor (Acari: Varroidae), the most common parasite of honeybees (Apis mellifera L.). Experimental colonies from the province of Bursa, Turkey, were divided into 5 homogeneous groups of 8 hives each. The 3 essential oils plus thymol (Thymovar®, an essential oil-based drug with known efficacy that was used for comparison) were applied to 1 group each and 1 group was left untreated as a control. Trace Metal Contents Of Some Wild-Growing Mushrooms In Bigadiç (Balıkesir), Turkey, İsmai̇l Şen, Hakan Alli, Beki̇r Çöl, Mustafa Çeli̇kkollu, Ahmet Balci

In this study, heavy metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Zn) contents of wild-growing mushrooms and soil samples collected from Bigadiç (Balıkesir) were determined. A total of 38 fungal taxa were found in the study area. Among the mushroom samples analysed, minimum and maximum metal contents were 0.11-2.58 mg kg^-1 for Cd, 1.01-19.55 mg kg^-1 for Cr, 2.61-72.44 mg kg^-1 for Cu, 1.38-47.52 mg kg^-1 for Mn, and 5.75-97.55 mg kg^-1 for Zn. For all elements, values are within the acceptable levels as reported by several researchers. Hohenbuehelia petaloides (Bull.) Schulzer had the lowest elemental composition for all elements. Two New Records Of Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 (Myxozoa, Myxosporea, Myxobolidae) Species From Turkey, Argun Aki̇f Özak, İbrahi̇m Demi̇rkale, İbrahi̇m Cengi̇zler

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Two different myxosporean fish parasites (Myxobolus episquamalis Egusa, Maeno & Sorimachi, 1990 and Myxobolus ichkeulensis Bahri & Marques, 1996) are reported based on samples found on the scales and gill arches of flathead mullet (Mugil cephalus) captured from Çamlık Lagoon, located on the northeastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Both parasites were found for the first time on flathead mullet from the Turkish coasts. In addition to the data concerning spore morphology and the dimensions of both species, new additional taxonomic observations are presented. Furthermore, asynchronous polar capsule maturation was observed in transmission electron microscope images of both species.

Nest characteristics of the Eurasian coot (Fulica atra) and the effect of vegetation and water depth on nest size were investigated. The study was conducted in 2008 on Poyrazlar Lake (Sakarya) in northwest Turkey. Depth and distance from the edge has no effect on internal nest diameter; however, nest height and external diameter are correlated with water depth.

The goal of this research was to determine the extent of resistance that turkey roundworms, Ascaridia dissimilis, have developed to anti-parasitic chemicals used in commercial poultry operations. Roundworm infections in turkeys have resulted in monetary losses for the poultry industry for years, generally due to poor feed conversion. The infection itself is subclinical and many turkeys have a light to moderate worm burden. Since parasitisms are light, this leads to the infections being noticed only during processing. Stem rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt), is one of the most important diseases limiting wheat production in Turkey. Surveys were conducted in 2007 and 2008 in order to determine the races of the pathogen present in Turkey. In 2007, it was found that 91 (43%) out of 207 inspected wheat fields were infected with stem rust, and in 2008, it was found that 61 (25%) out of 242 inspected fields were infected. Three new species from the Marmara region of Turkey are described: Hilara sakaryensis sp. nov. (Hilara abdominalis-group), Hilara truva sp. nov. (Hilara canescens-group), and Hilara balikesirensis sp. nov. (Hilara intermedia-group). Males and females are described and compared with related species, and male genitalia and forelegs are illustrated. The systematic position of the new species within the species groups is discussed, and a key to the Turkish species of Hilara Meigen is given.

Eryngium babadaghensis G.Ecevit-Genç, E.Akalın & A.Wörz sp. nova (Apiaceae, Saniculoideae) is described as a new species from the Babadağ (Fethiye-Muğla) in south-west Turkey. The new species is closely related to E. kotschyi Boiss., which is endemic to Turkey. Macrofungi Distribution Of Cocakdere Valley (Arslanköy, Mersin), Hasan Hüseyi̇n Doğan, Si̇nan Aktaş, Celaleddi̇n Öztürk, Giyasetti̇n Kaşik

The present study reports on species of macrofungi collected from 2002 to 2005 in Cocakdere valley in the central Taurus mountains. This area is protected and is one of the important plant areas in Turkey. In the field and during laboratory studies 186 taxa belonging 2 divisions and 44 families were identified. Among them, 6 families and 10 species belong to Ascomycota, and 38 families and 186 species belong to Basidiomycota. Moreover, 4 taxa-Cortinarius aureifolius, Inocybe hygrophorus, Ramaria suecica, and Scytinostroma portentosum -were found in the Turkish mycobiota for the first time.

The current conservation status of the Salvia L. (sage) taxa of the family Lamiaceae distributed in the East, South-East, Central, North Anatolian, and Marmara geographic regions of Turkey was reassessed at regional, national, and global levels using IUCN Red List categories and criteria. In accordance with the present taxonomic revision of the genus since 2005, the study area seems to cover 79 taxa, 36 of which are endemic and 4 of which are rare nonendemic; the remaining 39 taxa are widely distributed. Echinops ritrodes Bunge, E. gaillardotii Boiss., E. adenocaulos Boiss., E. chardinii Boiss. & Buhse, and E. tenuisectus Rech.f. were recorded for the first time in Turkey. The epiphytic diversity of lichens associated with Quercus cerris L. and Quercus frainetto Ten. were investigated in 21 localities of the Marmara region. A total of 106 taxa belonging to 49 genera were reported on Q. cerris and Q. frainetto, and 16 of those taxa were recorded for the first time in the Marmara region. Scorzonera zorkunensis Coskuncelebi & S.Makbul (Asteraceae) is described and illustrated from Turkey. It grows on serpentine in alpine steppe vegetation together with several endemic Scorzonera L. species in southern Anatolia at altitudes of 2075-2100 m. It is morphologically similar to S. pisidica Hub.-Mor., but it differs in its habit and stem and leaf pubescence. Additionally, the size and micromorphological characters of the achenes and some anatomical traits of the leaves, stems, and roots are helpful in distinguishing these closely related taxa. Verbascum hasbenlii Aytaç & H.Duman sp. nov. (sect. Bothrosperma Murb.) is described and illustrated from Turkey. This new species was collected in B1 Çan (Çanakkale Province) area. V. hasbenlii appears to be closely allied to V. luciliae (Boiss.) O.Kuntze and V. haraldi-adnani Parolly & Eren. Its affinities with this and other related species are discussed. The characteristic features of pollen, seed, stomata structure, and hairs are studied using a scanning electron microscope and the distribution of the new species in Turkey is given.

Marrubium sivasense Aytaç, Akgül & Ekici sp. nova (Lamiaceae) is described and illustrated from Central Anatolia, Turkey. The new species most resembles Marrubium depauperatum, but it differs by 3-10 flowered verticillasters, crenate to crenulated leaf margins, and unequal calyx teeth. The ecology and phenology of the new species as well as its etymology, conservation status, and diagnostic features are discussed.

Allium shirnakiense L.Behçet & Rüstemoğlu sp. nova (sect. Melanocrommyum Webb & Berth.) is described as a species new to science on the basis of material collected from Şırnak Province. Morphologically, it is related to A. rhetoreanum Nab., which is an species endemic to South-eastern Turkey. A diagnosis, a taxonomic description, and some illustrations are given.

A Turkish endemic, Erodium hendrikii Alpınar, was firstly described from NE Anatolia in 1994 based on insufficient specimens. In the present study, the description of this poorly known taxon was emended by adding several macro- and micromorphological traits of its leaf and fruit observed under LM and SEM. Furthermore, it was compared with the closely related species E. malacoides (L.) L'Her based on both morphological and molecular data and a modified identification key for the Flora of Turkey was prepared. The conservation status was also re-assessed according to the IUCN threat criteria.

The role of smoke as a fire-related germination cue is well known in many parts of the world, including Mediterranean-type ecosystems; however, it has been neglected in the Mediterranean Basin (MB). We studied the germination response of 5 woody species found in the eastern MB (south-western Turkey) to smoke solutions derived from different plant species. Contributions To The Macrofungal Diversity Of Uşak Province, Azi̇z Türkoğlu, Dursun Yağiz

This study was conducted on the macrofungal specimens collected from Uşak in 2006^-2009. In field and laboratory studies, 100 taxa belonging to 30 families and 2 classes were identified. Ten taxa belong to Ascomycetes and 90 to Basidiomycetes. Seven of them, i.e. Pseudoplectania sphagnophila (Pers.) Kreisel, Conocybe pulchella (Velen.) Hauskn. & Svrcek, Entoloma politoflavipes Noordel. & Liiv, Entoloma saundersii (Fr.) Sacc., Entoloma serrulatum (Fr.) Hesler, Hygrophorus nemoreus (Pers.) Fr., and Rugosomyces ionides (Bull.) Bon, are new records for Turkey.

Allium giganteum Regel (Liliaceae), Grammosciadium scabridum Boiss., and Ferulago angulata (Schlecht.) Boiss. subsp. carduchorum (Boiss. & Hausskn.) D.F.Chamb. (Apiaceae) are reported as new records for the Turkish flora. They have been identified using the collected specimens and Flora Iranica. The taxa's diagnostic characters, habitats, photos, and a distribution map of the new records in Turkey are given.

Alcea L. is represented by 18 species and Althaea L. by 4 species in the Flora of Turkey. Seventeen species of Alcea and all species of Althaea were collected. One new cultivated record of Alcea was added. Contrary to the Flora of Turkey, the endemicity of Alcea apterocarpa (Fenzl) Boiss., Alcea calvertii (Boiss.) Boiss., and Alcea fasciculiflora Zohary has not been proved. The threat category of Alcea fasciculiflora and Alcea pisidica Hub.-Mor. has been changed to CR, while they were placed in DD according to the Red Data Book of Turkish Plants.
