Taxonomy And Dna Barcoding In The Genus Manfreda (Salisb.) Asparagaceae, William David Ritchie Dec 2012

Taxonomy And Dna Barcoding In The Genus Manfreda (Salisb.) Asparagaceae, William David Ritchie

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The genus Manfreda Salisb. of Asparagaceae is a genus of potential horticultural interest and is currently subject to breeding efforts at the University of Arkansas. A lack of taxonomic clarity however undermines the classification of potential inter - and intrageneric hybrids. The study aims to assess existing species delimitation within the genus Manfreda employing morphology while investigating the potential utility of Consortium for the Barcode of Life Plant (CBOL) DNA Barcodes for identification of specific taxa and an External Transcribed Spacer (ETS) - Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) DNA barcode for developed hybridized taxa.

Genetic Comparison Of Water Molds From Embryos Of Amphibians Rana Cascadae, Bufo Boreas And Pseudacris Regilla, Kori K. Ault, James E. Johnson, Holly C. Pinkart, R. Steven Wagner

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Water molds that cause the disease saprolegniasis have been implicated in widespread mortality of amphibian embryos. However, because of the limitations of traditional identification methods, water mold species involved in die-offs or utilized in ecological studies often remain unidentified or identified only as Saprolegnia ferax. Furthermore, water mold taxonomy requires revision, so very distinct organisms may all be called S. ferax. Recent DNA-based studies indicate that the diversity of water molds infecting amphibian embryos is significantly higher than what was previously known, but these studies rely on culture methods, which may be biased towards taxa that grow best …

Review Of The Genus Acrobolbia With Remarks On Its Classification, And A Key To The World Genera Of Cyclocephalini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae), Mary Liz Jameson, Brett C. Ratcliffe, Vladislav Maly

Brett C. Ratcliffe

The monotypic South American scarab genus Acrobolbia Ohaus, 1912 is reviewed and transferred to the tribe Cyclocephalini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae). It was formerly placed in the subtribe Acrobolbiina (Rutelinae: Rutelini) or subtribe Oryctomorphina (Dynastinae: Pentodontini), depending on the author. We discuss characters that warrant transfer, redescribe the genus (including the first description of a female), and briefly discuss natural history of A. macrophylla Ohaus, 1912. We include a key to males and females of all 14 genera of Cyclocephalini.

Identification Of Species Of Vicia Subgenus Vicia (Fabaceae) Using Chloroplast Dna Data, Nadia Haider, Imad Nabulsi, Nizar Mirali

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Vicia subgenus Vicia (Fabaceae) contains several economically important food and forage legume species. Generally, the taxonomy and identification of these species have relied heavily on a few diagnostic morphological characters (e.g., the number of flowers per inflorescence). However, there are several specimens with intermediate morphological characters that make diagnosis of these species using those characters a difficult task for nonspecialists and render results that are not always accurate. The use of molecular markers, therefore, is the most attractive alternative strategy for a more accurate identification of species of the subgenus Vicia. In the present study, an attempt was made to …

Beyond Building A Tree: Phylogeny Of Pitvipers And Exploration Of Evolutionary Patterns, Allyson Fenwick Jan 2012

Beyond Building A Tree: Phylogeny Of Pitvipers And Exploration Of Evolutionary Patterns, Allyson Fenwick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As generic and higher-scale evolutionary relationships are increasingly well understood, systematists move research in two directions: 1) understanding specieslevel relationships with dense taxon sampling, and 2) evaluating evolutionary patterns using phylogeny. In this study I address both foci of systematic research using pitvipers, subfamily Crotalinae. For direction one, I evaluate the relationships of 96% of pitvipers by combining independent sets of molecular and phenotypic data. I find the inclusion of species with low numbers of informative characters (i.e. less than 100) negatively impacts resolution of the phylogeny, and the addition of independent datasets has no effect on or a small …

A New Species Of Gypsophila And A New Name For Silene (Caryophyllaceae) From Turkey, Ergi̇n Hamzaoğlu

Turkish Journal of Botany

Gypsophila turcica Hamzaoğlu is described as a new species. The specimen was collected from gypsaceous hills, at an altitude between 1755 and 1835 m from Zara District (Sivas Province). The new species is similar to Gypsophila festucifolia Hub.-Mor. The differences between these 2 taxa are discussed. Moreover, Silene choruhensis Hamzaoğlu nom. nova should replace S. ispirensis A.P.Khokhr. 1997, which is an illegitimate name as a younger homonym of S. ispirensis Boiss. 1856.
